Have you ever spent time on a farm? It's hard to believe there are some people who have never seen one. I grew up on a small farm. We had all kinds of animals and grew every kind of vegetable you can imagine. We milked our own cows and gathered chicken eggs. We walked through corn fields that grew so high, the stalks towered over our heads. We could play hide and go seek in the sugar cane and in the fields, hiding for what seemed like hours. Some times, we had to give ourselves up because hiding places were so easy to find.
We spent long nights inside the barn, sleeping on hay and rode horses much of the time.
Have you ever spent time on a farm? Would you like to?

Hello terilee
Indeed I have.
It was in Ireland when I was small and also in England in the north in the Lake District.
I got to shear sheep for the first time and bale hay and trout fish, all new to me.
I loved the farm cheese that was made there as well called Wensleydale cheese in big round blocks so fresh and would be so expensive now.
I really loved it and it was a good workout, course I was only around 19 or so, so working out was no problem hehehappy

Yum - Farm cheese.........I love good cheeeeeessee.
I could eat my weight in good cheese....of anykind.
Living on a farm was the BOMB when we were kids. I wonder how many people could do it now.

I am sitting in a rural farm house right now. We live in a rural area in northeast Colorado. I was the town kid when I married my husband and we lived for a year in the city but came home 28 years ago and have lived here ever since! My kids were raised here and I have to say that it's the best upbringing that you can give a kid. Having them be in county fairs, showing animals, working the fields, harvest, playing with the baby animals, and just enjoying the whole wide world that God gave us! I love living on the farm and I think anyone that hasn't experienced it is really missing an important part of life!

myLot reputation of 99/100. terilee79720 (1453)   ranked 96 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

How lucky you are horns......You took me back to our old farm kitchen in a flash - BAM - there I was, looking out the kitchen window watching my grandpa drive up to the back yard on his old red tractor.
I think farm life for kids is terrific. It teaches them so many values in life. And you're right, it's a sweet, sweet blessing to be where you are. Everyone should be able to at least see a farm. I wish we had one now.
We live in a small farming community, but there's nothing like living off the land and growing your own food. Yep - I'm jealous......

Good morning, terilee! I never lived on a farm, but I spent plenty of time with my grandparents on theirs. I was a little scaredy cat so I don't have a lot of good memories about farm animals, but I used to love spending the night there with them.

More of my memories involve picking fruits and veggies like strawberries and peas...and helping my grandmother with the cooking (okay, so I did mostly eating!) happy

Concerning those chicken eggs... well, I*do* remember going out with my grandma to gather them and I really hated it. The chickens flew from the top roost and I dreaded that so much and thought they'd fly into my face. cry

Hi doll! The memories are good though, huh? Gathering eggs and those chickens pecking at my hands is what I remember, and how orange the yolks were. That's some good eating.....and duck eggs too.
Ahhhh the memories.
Thanks Katie.

We lived in a small community, but we had a large garden, at least 2 acres. He use to raise some awesome veggies. Yes Corn stalks so high you couldn' see over them, just the sky above. Daddy did raise chickens, but that was about all he was allowed in the area we were in. He did rent land further out and raised pigs. I use to try to gather the eggs, but man those chickens could be mean!
Thanks for the memories.

Yea, the memories are great Pam. Wish we lived on the farm now, instead of in the city. I still keep a garden, but I'd love to be out on a farm.

My Grandfather had a farm, so, I spent many days playing with the animals, milking cows etc. The absolute worst job was picking rocks. I remember walking through the fields picking rocks and putting them in the back of the trailer on the plough. Working on a farm is back breaking tough work, but, very satisfying. I think people would have a new appreciation for the food we eat if they saw where it came from. I really think people think the meat and veggies we eat come from the grocery store. I would love to buy a hobby farm, with a cow and a couple of horses.

myLot reputation of 99/100. terilee79720 (1453)   ranked 96 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

Now - picking rocks...There's a memory and a half.
I would have never remembered that if you hadn't brought it up. Made me laugh.
Yea, food comes from the grocery store - LOL - just like chocolate milk comes from chocolate cows....Hahahahahah
I love it. thanks for the memory bonbon

Well, that life is really attractive. To be honest, I have never seen a farm myself. In my country, there are not that many farms, especially in my province. I always dream of living this kind of life on a farm. It's just great to be there.I wish one day I can spend some days on a farm.

myLot reputation of 99/100. terilee79720 (1453)   ranked 96 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

Maybe someday you will chrissieatu, if you wish hard enough. It's a nice way of life - peaceful and quiet, but lots of work.

myLot reputation of 99/100. chrissieatu (541)   ranked 3,525 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

I realize that there are a lot of works on the farm. But I take it as another form of happiness. I agree with you that if I desire it strong enough, I can make it one day.

Two years on the farm -- from Chicago to a farm on the desert in California where my stepfather was an irrigator. My sister and I had fun on the farm. It wasn't a cattle farm, just crops. We did have chickens, dogs and cats. My sister and I swam in the reservoir, caught polliwogs, rode on a combine, I learned to drive a Jeep and got to drive a tractor once just for fun.

Yeah, sis and I would play in the fields of maize, climb nearby buttes and whatever we did, as I recall it was fun.

I'm glad to be in the city as an adult.

Two words you used that I haven't heard in ages. Combine and Buttes. Daddy called his combine a 'bankout'. I never knew why and the Buttes of California hold a lot of memory for me. Thanks for the memories.

you are right, there are a lot of city kids that have never been out to the country. fortunately for us, my hubbys sister lives on a farm and we have even 'farm sat' while they went away. they have beef cows, so we dont have to milk them, but still have to feed them and the like.

myLot reputation of 99/100. terilee79720 (1453)   ranked 96 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

They don't know what they've missed living in the city all their lives. Give the farm any old day. I used to hate milking the cows and would NEVER drink the milk. It took me years to like milk. Love it now.

I've seen all of that, but haven't lived it.

A couple of years ago when I was in Minnesota, we had a small hobby farm. Six horses, a couple of dogs and cats, and a decent sized garden.

That's about it!

myLot reputation of 99/100. terilee79720 (1453)   ranked 96 out of 24,570 in people  5 months ago

Fun though huh? Minnesota is on our 'to do' list when we start traveling.
