Should Muslim women be punished after being raped?  |

 This is a question that has been broached recently in a group I participate in. Under Islamic law, a woman who has been raped is often punished for having put herself in a position that allowed the rape to occur - in other words, she is blamed for letting herself be caught alone with the rapist(s) and thus permitting the crime to take place. If Mom tells me to not touch the hot stove, and I do, she doesn't whip me; she figures the burn is punishment enough. On the other hand, the stove did not intentionally burn me..and we can't punish it. Should women bear a part of the blame for a man's violence? Do we say the man would not have commited the crime but for the opportunity afforded him? I don't agree.

I have no idea why all the nations on this earth started out or continues to blame women for some of the most ridiculous things ever. It is beyond me why men who are supposed to be the stronger vessel are always allowed to get away with so much.
The old testament actually speaks of women bieng raped and how they should be punished. Based on my recollection a distinction was made between the woman who was raped in the city and the woman who was raped in the field/country. The woman who was raped in the city is the one who should be stoned because she did not cry out so that poeple could go to her rescue.
Even in that case I think its highly unfair. Why should the man impose hmself on the woman and then the society punishes the woman for allowing the man to impose himself on her? Even the thought of it denotes stupidity.
In my opinion all of this is based on pure bull that came out of a male egotistic society. One where the women were constantly made to feel as if they were less than. I think it was wrong then even though life was more primitive and it is even more out of place in todays society irrespective of the nation or religion in which it takes place.
