Are you filling out the Census information?

This can apply to everyone across the world, but I thought of it because I just got in my mail the papers to fill out for the Census Bureau. Of course the government says we are required by law to fill it out and return it, but it wasn't even addressed to me, just my apartment number. I doubt you'll see me on the news, arrested for not filling out the census. But of course I'll fill it out anyway. I don't like some of the questions. Questions about my income seem like just a way to check out if I paid my taxes appropriately. Even in Bible times they did a census, but I doubt they asked some of these questions. Seriously, I don't mind. It's no big deal. But those in the U.S., are you going to fill yours out? Have you received one in the mail yet? And to those all over the world, do you or when do you have to fill out census information?

In my country... we don't fill out census forms... but from time to time... people that work for the government... go house to house... asking about the number of people who live in that particular house or apartment... their ages, gender... and how long they have been living in that particular place... no question about work or income are asked... I think that is more convinient for the household... but less accurate...

Yes, that is how they used to do it here, although I think they have always asked about the income. Do you prefer them to come door to door, or would you rather fill out a form and mail it in?

I haven't tried filling out forms... but for now... i prefer them going house to house... since that way... the government is able to employ people and the interview only takes about 3 minutes...

I thought they only did this once in a while and they did the whole country? I don't know if I would fill out something random like that Ambie, especially if it didn't have your name on it in the first place..Or call and see if it is legit, it could be someone trying to get information from you to steal your identity..

Oh don't worry, it is legit. That was my first thought too. It had numbers to call for information, explicit instructions, and someone I know from church was talking about having received one too. Apparently it is sent to a lot of random people across the U.S., and I don't see how they get an accurate reading from that. I know it all includes statistics, but still...I'm just glad they didn't ask for my social security number or bank information because they'd have to kill me to get that info, LOL.

Here in India, we have teachers (from government schools) who are hired to collect the census information (once in five years I think). They come door to door and collect the information...write it in the form...get us to sign and leave. I think the main reason we have someone else doing it for us is because many people in India are illiterate and unable to read or write. Also, each state has a different official language...so, for people like me whodo not live in our native state...we might find it difficult to fill out a form in the official language. I don't bother too much...just give the details and forget about it. As far as the income questions go, I'm not sure myself and I tell them so (my husband gives me money to run the house and I'm not sure how much his company's turnout it....my income is too low to be taxed)...they just need an approximate figure anyways.

The U.S. is supposed to have one every ten years, but I think sometimes they send out things in advance for people to fill out. I'm not too clear about the exact procedure. I know people use to come to the houses of citizens to get the information, but I guess they stopped that. I think it is pretty cool that they (India) are considerate enough to go around and get the info because some people cannot read or write. I hope it makes those people feel like they count in life too. Thanks for sharing this information with us. I like to hear about the ways other countries do things.

I do not think that I have received it. I will fill it out, as I believe that important data is gained and it will benefit all of us. I think I would try to make sure that it could not necessarily be traced to me, like income, etc.

I will fill my out if I recieve one. I think it is important to keep a *count* in this world. I don't know how they could punish us by law by 'not' filling it out. What if the mail system (God forbid) should lose a batch of them? How could they blame us for that? When they have things in the news about census and such I am always listening. A long time ago (20 yrs?), we has a census taker come to our house and fill out information.

I remember someone saying they were visited by a census taker once. Has that practive been abolished? I guess they just randomly send the surveys out now. Personally they would have gotten a better estimation of our state by sending it to my parents, not me.

I haven't seen one yet come my way, but thanks for the heads up. I generally do fill them out when I do get one. It has been a good while since I have received one and I will fill it out if and when I do get a census to fill out.

My former roommate the time before last the census was held didn't want to send it in, I told her that if they didn't get it they would come out to the door until they got it. She didn't let me respond - like I really cared that much - and, sure enough someone came to the door. No skin off my back since she was home and I wasn't. The last time she took it and answered it with the minimal info - again, I could care less. But this time I don't have her as a roommate, so I can answer it, or lose it (if you saw my house you'd understand that) on my own.

There was some kind of census deal in my area where they did a six month study of certain residences. They didn't follow the specific people, just the specific addresses. It was kind of annoying and a little aggravating, but we're required to do it by law, so we did it. Oh joy. How fun.

The last time I filled one out was a long time ago. I haven't received one recently, but If I get one I probably will fill it out if it's not too invasive.

Hi,there ,dear AmbiePam, Actually,I haven't got that kind of mail in my mailbox.I don't pay much attention to that as I think that is all my parent's duty .meanwhile my parent's don't wanna me to care so much about the trifles ,what they want is to let me concentrate more on my studies. This seems different from American as I know you emphasis independent much more than us. If I got that kind of mail ,I suppose I will fill that out because I don't want some other unimportant things occur.. Take care dear friend.. Molly;-)

I don't live with my parents, so if they got one at their house, they would have to fill it out. However, since I am the head of my own household (seeing as it is just my dog an I) I am in charge of filling out the census I received. Every head of household who receives one is supposed to fill it out. When I lived with my parents during the last census, they handled it.

The next US Census is supposed to be in 2010. It's done every 10 years. Is is a State census or a Federal one? I haven't seen anything or heard anything about them going out as yet. The Federal Census is never addressed to a person; it's just addressed to the home address. If I get one, I always fill it out. I've only had one really long one to do. That was back in the 1980's. Most people get the short one to do.

Oops! I did find this on the Census Bureau web site: www.census.gov/2010census/recent_news/010030.html Hope you can copy and paste that. A dress rehearsal census? lol The story is there.

Yeah, the paper enclosed in my envelope said it was for 2010. I wondered why they would bother sending them out now. The last one was in 2000, so I knew it was a bit too early. I hope they get enough responders for whatever reason they want it for.

Hello,Ambie! In every country census operations are being carried out at regular interval of ten years, and we are required to furnish all the informations to the Census Organisation.it is mandatory.these data are required to feed the government for utisising in policy making and planning developmental works. in India, the census data are being collected by the enumerators authorised by the organisation.they visit every door to collect such data.so without making any delay make arrangement to fill up the form and feel proud of it.thank you.
