Would you Stay Calm if Attacked by a Crocodile?

A woman in the Northern Territory (Australia) was attacked by a crocodile when she was swimming in a lagoon. Her husband jumped on the crocs back & poked his fingers in its eyes to free his wife from it's jaw. The woman suffered serious bite wounds to her legs, but rescuers said she remained incredibly calm after her ordeal & was able to talk about it. The Crocodile was 2.5 metres in length. I truly hope that if ever I was putting in a life risk situation, or, was in a position to rescue another person in a life threat situation, that I would be able to act like this man & wife. To think quickly, act rationally & stay calm. Could you do this in any dangerous situation?

Pit bulls seem to be the issue here yes pets. We have bears also but they dont usually attack. i am in the suburbs so not much of a problem with animals except rabbits eating my garden.

I can understand this. Do you have any other nasty, dangerous creatures in Minnesota?

I would probably freak out and shout at the top of my lungs the moment I see that crocodile. It's not common to see a crocodile in a dip on a lagoon.

Shouting would be a good idea, but not enough to get it to release its jaws from your body.

well I am just guessing and its easier to write in the cool confines of a room than when the situation actually occurs to me, but I think if I was supposed to be rescue or help somebody I could just manage to keep my wits about and do what needs to be done but if it were actually me in danger (like this lady) I would definitely have passed out and the rescue team need not have got to any trouble.

Well, that is telling the truth. And I guess for many people this would be the case. Most of us could not helping getting so freaked out that we would pass out.

i could say now that i'll be calm, but i just don't know if that would be my reaction when there's huge teeth biting down my legs. i admire those people who are able to remain calm & composed during a panicking situation. i am almost sure i would freak out.

Ithink a lot of people would freak out. They showed the couple on TV tonight. It was remarkable what they did.

I won't know really. That news came up on my papers today too and omg... thank goodness they were fine. That man was brave to climb onto the crocodile and poke at its eyes. This morning when I was reading, I was imagining how that feeling will be if I were the one poking. It is hard to imagine - poking at the EYES is such a violent act. I just can't imagine even doing that to someone(thing) "harmful". Only when an event really unfolds would one know what one would do - or not do.

This has been big news here. They have been on TV, & both seem very calm about it all. Amazing Really. Someone else said that about poking the eyes out. It is well known here to do that with shark attacks.

It is hard for me to visualize being in that kind of danger and not sure how I would react. Just the thought of it creeps me out!

You would not be the only one. Most people could not visualise how they would react.

I wonder if she was in shock? People who suffer a traumatic circumstance often remain calm right after the incident, and then when they get home, they fall apart. Either way, I know a lot of people who would fall to pieces shock or not. I think I would be quite calm, as I usually am in dire situations. I'm also one of those people who after having been calm, fall apart when I find time to be alone afterwards. : (

I am not sure. They have been showing the couple on TV, interviewing them quite a few times. They are a lovely couple, fairly shy, but very brave. Both Aboriginals.

I would definitely not swim in the wild with such preditors in the area. I lived in Florida for a few years, and I never swam in any natural body of water for that reason. The same reason I never swim in the ocean anywhere because of sharks and stinging jelly fish. For me it is not worth it. I heard they can run fast on land, too, but only in a straight line. If one starts coming at you, all you have to do is run in a zig zag pattern. It just takes too much effort for them to keep changing direction on land.

I never thought of that on land. I think all our crocodile attacks occur in water. But you are correct. One should never swim where it is known that crocodiles may be there.

I wish i could if ever i get into that kind of situation... but i remember being extra calm when the strongest earthquake struck my country... it was like a magnitude of 7... i did not cry nor scream out loud... i just sat inside the classroom and ate cake until the earthquake was over... i think that was quite odd... but still... i was calm... amidst the shouting and crying...

That is a good sign that you would remain calm & collected. How old were you when this earthquake hit?

Now I doubt that very much. That creature will not change its intentions even if I remain calm. I admire the courage of that couple and would surely like to have such quick thinking persons around me if I should ever fall in such a position.

Hello, JennyBianca! I believe that I am a calm person. Of course, I wouldn't go walking after the crocodile, almost stopping, and then poke his eyes. But I'd know what to do, if I were put into a danger situation. Panic does not take me over. I have to admit, though, that poking the eyes is disgusting. Damn, I would never think of it even if my mother was dying. It's just something that I wouldn't think of, I wouldn't do it normally. I'd do something else, something different, just don't know what yet. Again: yes, I believe I would be calm in a situation like this. Respectfully.

It is hard to know what one would do in this situation. But poking eyes is well known in crocodile or shark attacks.

Crocodile - I don't like anything of the reptile species except the frog.
HECK NO!! lol I'd be screaming like a nut without it's shell!! lol I don't like anything of the reptile species except the frog. However if I were the bystander of one being attacked, I'd be scared out of my mind but I'd have to give it a shot and try to free the person. I couldn't stand idoling by and watch but would have to help any way that I could.

That goes to show that you could remain calm enough to act if another persons life was in danger. I have been looking out for your other discussion on something bad happening, but haven't seen it yet.

I'm sorry, I've been so darn stressed to the max that I fell asleep. I'm thinking of trying to do it now... there's just so darn much to tell. But I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks Jenny.
