Tonya Michelle Lee, 35, was arrested on Monday and charged with one count of identity fraud. Investigators said she assumed her daughter’s identity in2005 and used it in several different counties. They would not elaborate on what exactly Lee allegedly did with her daughter’s identity.
Child is now staying with her dad in a different county. You wouldn't think a mother would do this to her own child.

I am not surprised. The mother knew the name and SS# of the kid, so that would have made it easy. She obviously doesn't have custody of the kid, now, but I'm uncertain if she had custody of the child when she used the identity.
There are a few stories I can find on the internet about this. They don't serve to provide much more information. So, as it stands the story leaves me with two thoughts.
One, how common is this? Mothers and fathers know the SS# of their child. How easy is it to abuse this if your own credit is in the dumps?
Two, at what point can one get a credit card in the name of their child? I didn't think a 5 year old child would have a credit score, therefore they can't get a card.

I have seen and heard of mothers/grandmothers or guardian using the childrens name and SS# for various things from magazine subscriptions to renting furniture, bills, loans and all the things in between. I think it a shame that a parent/guardian can ruin a childs credit without a second thought to their future and the htings they made need like student loans or help and can't get it because someone messed it up before they were even old enough to vote. I am glad they caught this woman and hope she did nothing to ruin her childs credit.

I remember when my son's father went to try to get the electric turned on at his apartment about 11 years ago the electric company told him he had an outstanding bill he had to pay first. The bill was from when he was like 12. His dad had gotten the electric turned on in his name. His ex wife had also gotten a credit card in his daughters name. It is sad really what parents will do to their kids.

That is just horrible...that must have been one very, very desperate mother...
I have heard things where we have to be extra careful with our kid's social security numbers because people were stealing them, but I could never believe that a mother would do it to her own child...
on the bright side, at least the daughter has 13 years for the credit companies to get it straightened out so hopefully she won't have too many problems as she gets older!

I wonder if she used her name and social security number to get utilites or cable or phone hooked up?
In my 'bad' days (long time ago), I had a phone in my daughter's name and then found out it was illegal and had it quickly shut off. I think that they could have gotten my for stolen identity. Since then, it had been widely broadcast that that is illegal. Even the 'judge' shows have cases on all of the time like this.

This type of stuff is just crazy. What is really going on in the world these days. I feel like there are more and more problems developing each and every year that passes. I'm not sure why but as you watch the news and headlines online, things are just worst and worst. A mother, taking on their child's identity is mad. Doing that can only ruin the child in the long run, if she wasn't caught, and even then it may take a while to be able to fix any of the errors that the mother my have caused while using the daughter's identity. I sure hope the father is someone that is going to take care of the daughter and the mother learns from this big mistake she has made in her life.

yes that is very wrong indeed to set your own child up to fail because you've ruined their name, especially seeing as it's her own mother. but I see stuff like that every day here in the ghetto lol people always use other names for things like phones and cable etc even their own children .. it's sad.
