I've posted about my Yoga routine and the benefits of Meditation, but there is more to good health than exercise and positive thinking. An old saying holds, that we are what we eat, and I'm inclined to agree. However the road to good eating is full of potholes, many of them put there by big business and those looking to embellish their bottom lines. One of the staple foods of North America is white bread, and the supermarket shelves are full, but the bread is packed with preservatives to preserve shelf life.(Whats that doing to us?) The white flour is bleached, and the bran and wheat-germ removed, all to make the finished product whiter. There is absolutely no thought going into this bread of the health benefits of the finished product. I prefer to bake my own bread. The supermarket shelves are packed with convenience foods such as Instant Potatoes, and Instant Rice. These products have been cooked and powdered to make life easier for the working Mom. Each cooking, and powdering process takes nourishment from the food and the resultant product in the box is hardly worth carrying home. Always read the label! If its not grown and packed in North America, don't buy it! ( or eat it!) Many developing nations have no idea of sanitation and no thoughts of cleanliness, and their products are just an accident going somewhere to happen.Pay a little more and be Healthy!

Yes, I agree that we need to really be careful of what we eat. Every food now is becoming instant. Instant and ready to eat but full of preservatives. It doesn't even preserve our life but makes our life instant. We might not already be sure but in a moment we can just be instantly our of control.
Indeed, it may have made our lives easier with it but it will also gave sickness and health risks easier earned.
Yes, food makes and gives us nourishment. If we don't value and take careful look of what we put in to our body, we might be at risk soon trying to cure for and suffer rather than enjoy life. Stay healthy and be careful.

The Present Generation may be the first to be outlived by their Parents, because of their Obesity. Obesity kills, and Nobody is sure where to place the blame. Is it on the Fast Food industry for developing the deep fried fads, or the Parents who taught their kids to love Fast-Foods and Sugar-Donuts?

Ohh, yes, I agree. Older generations are alive longer than their descendants and even healthier.
Put the blame to whom? I don't know. We just have to take care and put our care to ourselves because others are not concerned with it. They just want all these ballooning profits to stay rich. LOL.

Cooking at home is a dieing art because working Moms no longer have time for meal preparation and the kids are trained to eat out or order in. Meals are no longer family events where everyone sits down together to enjoy, savor, and digest, their food.

I didn't know that about bread. Could you possibly pm me in how to make my own bread. I make a great cuban bread but it has a really crunchy outer crust that isn't really suitable for things like pb&j's. I also missed your discussions on yoga and meditation...would you know the titles of them and I'll go hunt them up on your profile.
I try to avoid some things like instant potatoes and instant rice...my downfall is mac and cheese. It really is hard to find foods that are actually good for you anymore.

Baking Bread, even in a Bread-machine is not that easy. It takes quite a bit of trial and error to be able to bake a perfect loaf every time. However its well worth the trouble. You can find bread recipes on the Internet, and in your local book store. When you buy a bread-machine a recipe book is included. Macaroni and Cheese is easy to make and quite a healthy food. An easy way to begin is with Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Then buy your own Macaroni and add the grated cheese.

yes, i strongly agree with you. even now non working moms prefer these fast foods as they've become some kind of prestige to buy. why do we have to go for these fast foods when we can prepare more fresh and nutritious food for the kids.
well, the vogue of buying fast food as indication of wealth has taken the notion of our present generation. more to the point when dating most go to the fast food restaurants. it's this that we best can't cook now even if we wish to as we've been taught mostly eating at restaurants and getting fast food at the expense of cooking fresh raw foodstuff.

Yes. I agree with you. All those instant cooking foods are just for cooking convenient and definitely no health value in it. I am not saying that we cannot buy or eat them, but if we can afford healthy food, why buy foods that will cause health problems in the long run?

I am taking an anthropology of food course that discusses a lot of the things everyone here is talking about. If you wouldn't mind me asking some questions about how you eat, if you were taught to cook, and your upbringing, I would really appreciate it. This information would be used anyonomously for the sole purpose of field research for my thesis paper for this class. All questions will be asked through email. If you're interested, please email at amyeaton@iupui.edu before April 14, 2008. Any assistance would be extremely useful!
Sincerely,
Amy

I was just thinking about years back when my mother was using instant potatoes and I always thought that they tasted a lot like the cardboard box they came in. I have since not used them because I like the taste of a real potato cooked until its done and mashed with margarine or a little butter so much better. Since I was diagnosed with diabetes I have learned that real stuff is so much better tasting and better for my health.fresh veggies and fresh fruit, lean meat, and lo fat dairy and lots of whole grains that is the way to good health for everyone whether they are diabetics or not.

I'm wondering what your Mom said when she caught you eating the cardboard box? But,all kidding aside you do have a good point. There is no contest between real fresh cooked food and the artificial kind that comes from a Box. Speaking of Diabetes! Did you know that Tomato Ketchup is laced with refined sugar, and that refined white sugar is mixed with salt to keep it loose and running in humid weather?

I agree to what you have said. I love eating foods anywhere, sometimes, I even like eating street foods. Don't get me wrong, street foods are yummy but there is an instance that I got sick after eating street foods like "fishball" and "quail eggs" on the side street for a week. I was hospitalized for 3 days because I kept on vomitting so my lesson is: Pay a little more on what we are eating and be healthy! Just like what you've said. Thanks for the healthy reminder!
