Address Books - Hardback Book By Phone Or Online Version?

I have just written a letter and truned to my address book by the phone to check postcode and wondered how many of you still use an address books or do you rely on having these details stored online for you now. I write my addresses in pencil as people move and change numbers so often these days it makes it easier to update and less messy than lots of scribbling out. Which do you prefer? Please share Ellie:D PS: I am going away tomorrow so any responses I receive after then I will respond to upon my return but I will respond.

We have two address books. So how come we never have the address of people that we want to correspond with in either of them? Grrr. I have an address book on the computer and I tend to put all new addresses on there. But BT.com has helped us many times. But if the person that you are looking for is ex-directory then I am afraid all hope is gone. I once drove all the way to Bournemouth (45 minutes) to find the number of someone's house! Then drove home and sent them the letter. I could have put it through their door but I didn't want to see them at that time. Crazy boy.

Now that is crazy! I know where all my frineds live and how to get there but without looking up their addresses have no idea of numbers or road names but could find my way to their homes no problem at all. I think it is good to have a hardcopy as well as on computer also, but like you say the one you want you haven't got in book and yep their ex-directory. Grrr, understand that one. Elle:D

Hi Littleowl, Due to no notifications problem I have managed to miss a whole page of responses can you believe that and this is one of them. I am so pleased you keep a hard copy, I do too. Only early today my computer was hit by a virus but I manage to deal with and quarantine almost immediately. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I was lucky that I caught mine in time and had a neighbour next door who could come in and help and my sytem told me exactly where it was and where it had come from, not as drastic as the problem you had with yours. Yes I have a few online but only online contacts really but everything I keep in an address book including mobile numbers at the back in case I ever lose my phone. I hope you have had a good day. I have an address book with the addresses of the church members, but the other address books I keep online. I have a couple of phone numbers in my cell phone, but that is all. I really should get myself an address book or put my planner in my purse as sometimes I have to have an address and phone number and I cannot remember it, and I do not carry my computer along with me. But I just keep forgetting to do so.

Hi Suspenseful, Oh yes I find the one time I need an name and address whilst out is when I haven't my handbag with me that I have an address book in. I like a hard copy of most things if I can. Ellie :D

I don't even have an address book. The only thing I keep on anyone is their phone numbers, which are stored in my cell phone.

Wow! What do you do if you want to send a birthday card or a letter with no address or do you just text a greeting? I would be frightened to hold information just on my phone in case I lost it (or my little boy dropped in sink of water, which he has done in past, bless) but thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I know all my immediate family's address by heart, and they are the only people I would send letters and cards to. I have my contacts in my cell phone backed up in my computer, in case anything were to happen to it!

Well done you! Excellent for remembering them all. I know where they all ive but never the numbers or postcodes. I have all my mobile numbers listed at the back of the address book just in case so its great that you have them listed elsewhere too. Thanks again for sharing. Ellie :D

I still use an address book, it is falling to pieces and is a mess but it is an address book all the same! I could not have an online one as it means turning the computer on everytime I needed to find an address. Sometimes the old methods are still the best.

Hi Gemini_rose, I still prefer an old address book too. I write everything is pencil though so that when someone changes an address or a number I can just erase and rewrite saves it getting so messy as I have had a few falling apart ones myself. Ellie :D

So now you have two LOL. Whenever I replace mine I think I will write nice and neatly and always in pencil so I can amend and suddenly the phone will ring and I need a piece of paper and I jot into it or if I can't find the pencil wrie in ink and you can bet that is the one that needs changing cos they move. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Hmm, I don't really have an address book. Usually I send emails, and my gmail account remember the email address that I've sent to before.. so it works pretty fine for me. :)

As long as it works for you thats the main thing. I am a lot older than you so still tend to use the old hardbook version. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I have my address book on line now, I don't do anything manually any more. It sucks though when my computer crashed last year, but I was able to retrieve some of the information back again

the addresses that I would need from time to time I do keep in a book at my desk. I usually take the return address labels off of envelopes and tape them into my book... this way when an address changes I can simply remove that label and add the new one in its place. I often look up phone numbers online, however... I like to use www.anywho.com or www.whowhere.com for phone numbers

Hi That is an excellent idea I have never thought to use the labels! I do write in pencil in my address book though and that way when they change I can alter without it looking too messy. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

I would prefer to have the two. The two have the advantage over the other but for the availability and easy access of data I would prefer the Online Version, but what happens if you do not have a computer readily available then I would turn to the Hardback Book by Phone.

They are my views but I must admit I do use my address book by the phone more than my online one as like you say you need to be online to retrieve so it is not always available immediately. Thank you for sharing. Ellie :D

I have a nice hardback address book. I've had it a long time through many many moves and it got to the point where so many of the addresses were crossed out, it was time for a new one. Well, the office store didn't have refill pages and I ended up getting a new book. I sat by the televison carefully copying all the addresses we use currently into the new book. It was all neat and nice for once. My husband picks up the book the next day and scrawls a number over the first inside page ARRRRRGGGG!

LOL I can imagine the ARRRRRRRGGGGGG moment and even though I write in pencil in my address book so that I can erase if any changes there is always that call that comes in where you can find a pen but no paper to write something down and the only thing available??? yes youv'e guessed the address book. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

my address book is now online like most things these days. I think my old fashioned address book is in a drawer somewhere but I do not know where

i use both. as much as i love and rely on my computer daily i always say "what if my computer crashes or there is a power outage" i would not want all my info on my computer where i cannot get to it. i keep my email address on my computer and everything else is in my hard copy phone book.

That is why I always keep an address book by the phone. I had a problem with the computer today so if all was online I wouldn't have been able to access any info. I also keep all mobile numbers listed in the back incase I ever lose my phone. Thanks for sharing, appreciated. Ellie :D

I still use both types of address books but prefer the online version or the address book that came with my computer. Since I am on my computer frequently, it is easier for me to update any changes on it than writing it in a book. Of course, if our computers crash than we might lose that information so I think it is good to have both just in case. Plus if we write them in a book we do not have to worry about hackers or viruses.

The main reason why I always have a hard copy is just in case I suffer any problems with the computer so I think it is wise to keep both but I agreee the convienence of updating whilst online is so much easier. Ellie :D

I know how many computers you have too so to use an actual address book does say how much we shouldn't rely on them eh! Thank you for sharing. Ellie :D

Well I relied completely on my phone, until it got stolen and I had to buy a new sim card... All my numbers were lost. See if I had a hard copy I could have used it as a back up... I will soon copy every entry I have in my current phone in an address book so that I won't fall in that trap again... (not that I am planning to get my phone stolen anytime soon...)

I write all my mobile telephone numbers into the back of the address book in case I was to ever lose my phone and prefer address book in case anything goes wrong with the computer. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D
