Ride on toys...how old?

I don't mean the pedal kind, just the little ones the child sits on and uses their feet to roll along. I'm just wondering how old your kids were able to use them.
People with babies near my youngest son's age are absolutely amazed that he can scoot around on his so well at 18 months...their babies can't move their's at all or can only go backwards while mine goes forward, backward, slow, fast, anywhere he wants to go. He's been able to move on his since he was just over 13 months old (he got it for Christmas and was riding it the same day).
So I don't mean to be bragging or putting down other babies but I never really thought it was that unusual for them to be riding at this age so I don't know what to think. Is mine "advanced" or is it the other babies who are behind? How old were your babies able to use a ride on toy?

My grand daughter is 8 months old, and she has a few of those riding toys, but I'm not sure if my daughter has put her on it yet to try to see if she can or not. She is already crawling and pulling up, so I'm sure it won't be anytime at all before she will be able to ride one.

My son from what I can remember was about eighteen months old when he scooted round on his but he didn't get until about then as a neighbour from upstairs gave it to us so maybe he would have done earlier if he had. He stills love to scoot round on it now and he is four bless. I don't think the age they do things really matter that much, some kick a ball sooner, some catch earlier, talk earlier, they are all such individuals eh! Ellie :D

My son got one for his first Christmas. He was almost 11 months old. He was still to little for it then, so we put it away. We pulled it back out to see if he could use it when he was about 15-16 months old or so. It took him about two days to get the hang of it really. At first he could only go backwards. Within the first week he could go however fast he wanted to and go forward and back without a problem.

my son was able to scootch around on one earlier than the girls could. I think the gross motor skills are easier to boys. His legs were shorter than the girls' too, not sure if that helped them be stronger or not.
He received one for his first easter when he was 10 mos old - he could not ride it then but enjoyed pushing it around the room.... I am only guessing here as it has been such a long time but I am thinking when he was around 14 mos before he could really make it go and control it.

My eldest daughter couldnt even walk at 18 months lol so no pushing one of those was beyond her think she was almost two before she managed it but her little sister was able to do it from about 12/13 months she never stops its quite scary to watch some days!

My younger son is 17 months old and he's been using the ride on toy for quite a few months now. He's quite capable of taking it anywhere he wants. My son has been riding it since he was around 13 months too....and he seems to be a vehicle crazy boy (which my older one never was)...so maybe that the reason. Each child has a taste for something...and probably ours like vehicles and that's why they are scooting around in it. Other kids might be doing other things better than our kids.
My only problem with it is that my 7 year old wants to use it too...lol He never wanted it when he was younger...but now he's on it all the time ...when the younger one lets him have it.

I believe my daughter got one of these & a sit on - ride along trike for her first birthday but it's hard to say just because my daughter was an early walker so she was already doing a lot of things & wasn't overly interested in the ride on, push along toys.
I have often asked myself if my daughter was advanced or maybe other's were just a little delayed - just looking at my 2 nephews & niece (all around 1 now) & not one of them are doing any of the things my daughter was at that age. For example, all the (nieces/nephews) can get around but none are walking - my daughter was already walking for a few months before her 1st birthday. My daughter had a few words out at the same age & none of these are saying much of anything.
I think sometimes kids just vary so very much it really is hard to say :) In other cases (like perhaps with my daughter) where there wasn't any real interest in the push along toy coz she was more interested in her other toys - some kids might take more of a liking to those sorts of things than other kids!

My friend's kids did it around one also. I guess it all depends on when they start walking. My boy (born 3 months early) just started walking this past April (he will be 2 in June)-- so he is really just starting to get on the ride-on toys-- and for the most part he goes backwards more than front wards.

My oldest was the best at the riding toys, he loved them. He was about 13 months as well. My other 2 kids were riding around 15 months. My oldest also liked to climb. He climbed the radiator pipes once all the way to the ceiling, then screamed for help to get down. He was just over 2 when he did that. I sure enjoyed all the differences in each one.

So Smart.. Kids usually have the zeal to learn at a young age and tend to learn more than what we are teaching them by trying things out themselves. You would always tell a baby that fire is bad, but sometime or the other, they would meddle with it and get themselves burnt and then know that it's really bad. It was good to know that your kid can ride his scooter so well. I have photographs of me sitting on a pedal scooter when I was a year or so, but don't really remember going around on it.
