What's up with the terrible "on hold" music nowdays?

I've spent a fair amount of time on hold lately, and the on hold music is torture. I would rather hear a political speech than listen to muzak, I don't want to hang up because I'll be put at the end of the line again. What's a person to do?

I was on hold the other day and thinking the same exact thing. It was really annoying. On top of that they would break in every 30 seconds just to tell me I was still on hold...go figure...lol. After about 3 minutes I was ready to throw the phone out the window.

I haven't been on hold much lately, but the last couple times I found myself singing along to the music. So it must have been good. I was on with either Verizon or At&T. It wasn't just music, it was actual songs with people singing.

hi gfp. if i was put on hold by a machine, i just put the speaker on and do wgo on with something else until someone picks up the phone or the machine prompts up again. however, if i was talkign to an actual person, i say that i prefer not to be put on hold and would rather wait for the person i have to talk to. if the person that i have to talk to is in another table/desk/work area, i tell the person on the other end of the line to make sure that the person i need to talk to is available so that my waiting and listening time will be minimized. i also always ask for the direct line of contact persons. i hate making phones through the trunk line as the possibility of being put on hold and waiting is more likely.

I never really have to call anywhere that would put me on hold, but I have heard from family and friends that the music is like fingers on a chalkboard, and if I had to suffer through it,I would put it on speaker phone, and then watch television,or play a video game, until the evil music went off.

I am with you on this gitfiddleplpayer for I had this done to me just a coupple of days ago when calling my doctor's office they put me on hold for like 10 minutes. I was slowly being tortured by the sleepy elevator mucsic they had on. I knew I had to wait for it was a must I talked to the doctor to be seen. Some of the holds they put you on they might have some slow mellow music that ok I can handle that but not the intsrumental music only kind of thing it's rather annoying.

I have switch my phone to speaker phone, turn the volume down but load enough to hear it when someone finally answers it, I then will read a magazine or do something on the computer while waiting for the phone to be answered. And if you are calling a government agency then expect to have to listen to their stuff for at least an hour.

Whenver I end up being put on hold and I feel it's going to be for a while, I'll just turn the speaker on, set it down where I'm working till someone comes on the phone. The longest I've ever been put on hold was 3hrs...yes, 3 long hrs. I just set the phone down next to me on the bed and started reading a book. I was almost half-way thru it before I finally heard a hello on the phone. It was with AOL when I was calling to cancel my service.

Oh I had this recently when I had problems with the internet connection and I was so peed off anyway by it all it didn't help with this depressing music that I was having to listen to on top of it. I am not crazy but I was actually saying to the recording can't you play something a little bit more cheerful LOL. Ellie :D

I worked one night as a nurses aid in a long beach hospital that played that same music all night long low and those poor patients who could not get away from it. lol.

No no no! Hold muzak is bad, but political speeches are even worse! I normally put the phone on loudspeaker and leave it to play away to itself until someone answers, very quietly. Then I pootle around on the computer whilst I move up the queue. When someone answers at the other end, you can hear. My own personal pet hate is when the recorded voice comes on to tell me that 'Your call is important to us'. If my call is that important to you, why don't you answer the &*%%%^* phone then?

I've been put on hold in the past where the music is pretty nifty and I find myself singing along or if it's not a song then tapping myself foot!! lol

They play bad hold music, because they are hoping you will hang up. I tried to cancel something I had subscribed to online (of course you cannot cancel online as that would be too easy), and I was treated to 1/2 hour of what sounded like 80s music played on the flute by 3rd graders. The best thing to do, is to make sure you are using a phone with speaker function, so at least the music is not right in your ear. Put the phone down and go about doing other things until they finally put you through to a person. This ususally works for me.

Oh I know! Those songs are absolutly terrible. And you have no choice but to listen because you need to wait to talk to someone. The worst are pop songs turned into an instrumental version. They sound so terrible and I spend all of my time sitting there realizing the tune sounds familiar but not able to figure out which song it is.

Yeah, I know the muzak they play is always corny. I'd rather be made to listen to something I like. I don't what you could do about it, just have to put up with it, I guess...lol.

My personal opinion is that they are trying to break you before they have to talk to you. If you get a feeling of relief when you are taken off hold, you are more likely to be extremely greatful just because you don't have to listen to the terribly short loop that they have been playing at you for the last hour or so since that is how long they take just to answer the phone.
