Do you consider cigarette butts litter? Why or why not?

I get so tired of picking up 100's of cigarette butts around my mailbox. My neighbors round the corner, take one last drag on their cigarette and then flick the butt out the window into my yard. It is often almost totally white with butts. Do you consider this littering? I have also seen people open their car door while sitting at a redlight and empty their ashtray onto the roadside. Should this be considered littering and be arrestable?

In my book, it is absolutely litter! It takes years for those filters to disintegrate. I would be upset too, and me? I would tell the neighbors (nicely) that I do not appreciate it. And people who empty their ashtrays onto the roadside? (Don't get me started lol) I have actually taken down their license number and phoned the cops complaining about their littering. Here in Ohio, if a policeman would see it, they would most definitely get a ticket! I think people who do that are terribly insensitive and rude. If those were my neighbors, I'd probably tell them to keep their ash out of my yard, or bag them up and take them over and tell them you've seen them lose them out their window, and since it's their property I'd thought they'd maybe want it back. Sheesh, some people just don't think at all!!

OOOOHHHH, I like the idea of telling them that they 'lost' something and that they may want it back!!! I could easily fill a plastic grocery bag per week. We actually recently moved away from the house and neighborhood at which this was such a problem. I have yet to see a problem in our new house and neighborhood. lets keep our fingers crossed!

hi crazynurse~!
of course it is littering! but i dunno about the legal side of it in our country, you don't get arrested for littering.
but maybe you could talk to your neighbor about the situation. why doesn't he litter in his own yard and why send it on your side of the fence. i would hate to be sweeping his trash off my yard everyday. i don't think it is fair.
anyhow, i hope everything will work out fine between you and your neighbor.
take care and God bless you! :)

Hi spoiled. Actually the scenario that I am speaking of is in the home from which I have just moved away. I sure hope my neighbors in this new city and home are better!

Oh yes this is littering also. I cant stand when people do this. I have heard people say well they make my car stink.....hello what do you think its doing to the earth people. A little respect s not asking alot. Now there are many that dont do this thankfully not all smokers are as careless.

To the people who say, "Well, they make my car stink," I always have to ask one thing: Why are you smoking them in the car in the first place, then? You could easily fix that problem if you were more responsible and less self-centered. I completely agree with your point. C:

If someone has to sweep it up,and it's an eyesore,It sure is litter! I read a discussion about a uk Woman whose little Daughter was eating a sausage roll in a park, and dropped some pastry crumbs-She was cautioned by authorities! A neighbour dumping their butts in your yard is more litter worthy than that little Girl...

I do consider them litter.I am a smoker I do not smoke in my house, however I use an ashtray outside.I also will put a cig out if I am at a public place, outside of course,if there isn't an ashtray available or garbage I will put it in my pocket if I have to.
I hate it when my sister will pull up in her car and chat with me outside, and even though she sees me hanging onto my butt she will pitch hers on my ground,or in my parking lot.Even though I have asked her not to do this, she leaves and I go and pick them up.It is just a matter of respect they are litter, and I don't through my empty coffee cup or chip bag on the ground, its the same thing.

Yes I do. I know a friend of mind was stopped by the police for throwing a butt out her car window. She almost got a ticket for littering.

I hate those things, gross, but I actually have a bigger problem with monkey butts where I live. My apartment backs up to some woods where a roaming band of babboons have taken up residence. I can't step out the front door without seeing at least 1 big pink a$$ staring back at me, and don't even get me started on the poop throwing.

I do consider them litter... they do not readily disintegrate, and they are an eyesore making a place look unkempt and rather scuzzy. They also smell bad. If someone wants to let them become part of the soil - well let them dig a hole and bury them! Unless you have a goat or bend over to pick them up - they will sit there for years....even with rain, snow, and ice.

I'm a smoker and I'd say HELL YEAH it's littering!! I can't stand a person who throws their trash out the window!! I take all of my trash no matter how big or small it is and put it in a pile and take it out on my next stop. I never throw things out the window because it dirties the area we live in and that's so disquesting!!

Of course it's littering, it's made of a paper substance that takes awhile to deteriorate, just like a gum wrapper, or a newspaper or whatever other kind of paper anyone would throw on the ground.
The only things I Don't consider littering are the types of small things that an animal will come along and eat up shortly, or that will rot before long, like an apple core, or bread that the birds will eat. Even a piece of gum will get eaten by the little critters that like sweets. Lol.

Yes, it is littering. While they may degrade after time, it is still a mess to look at and takes away from our enjoyment of our own little slice of heaven. I am a smoker, and I take the time to throw my butts into the proper receptacles for them to be removed.
I have also been known to tell people if they insist on dropping butts in my yard, they will not be allowed to smoke there. It amazes me that you end up with so many around your mailbox. I wish there was a suggestion for how to stop this, but I really don't have one for you.
I feel your pain though! And not sure about other states, but here in Pennsylvania, if you are seen throwing a butt out the window of your car, an officer will stop you and give you a ticket for it.
