Why can't they speak English properly?

I get so cross when I ring up a company and I can't understand a word the other person's saying, sometimes their accents are far too broad, sometimes they don't speak English properly, sometimes they're just too quiet.
Why do people employ people like that as telephonists?
Do you agree that if you live in an English speaking part of the world (specifically England) that the people you talk to about a service in your own country should be comprehensible?

I hear you about this! I had to make a couple calls to certain companies and when I reach someone I don't understand I simply hangup and dial again hoping that I will get someone new. Speaking of England, there are no just people who can't speak English properly but people with such strong accents that it is hard to understand! I wanted to call a friend on an airforce base in England and the operator had such a strong 'Enlgish' accent that I couldn't understand her! The dialect was very odd to me. Of course, she probably thought the same from me since I hail from the midwest of the US!

I do agree. I have started telling people I don't understand them and hanging up then e-mailing the company to complain. I also thank people for speaking clear English. We are often told these phone calls are taped to provide better service so if enough people do as I do there may be a change.

I don't know why people who can not be understood always seem to be the ones on the telephone. There are some laws to ensure that people can't be anything-ist but there are also laws where some restrictions are legally allowed and I think that this should apply to call centres and anyone else who is likely to have to speak on the 'phone. They can not do the job properly if they can not be understood.

I agree with you, it is very frustrating.
I can't count the times I've received calls from some telemarketer, or was calling a business and couldn't make heads or tails out of what was being said.
I just want to slam the phone down.
I don't know why companies employ people with such thick accents unless it is because they can pay them cheaper.
Usually it is all about the all mighty dollar.
