A disabled lady who has been a regular visitor to a good restaurant for a long while has apparently been asked by the management not to use their restaurant again....the reason given is that because she is quite disabled that the other diners are being `put off` off their food having her eating with them!!!!
So because she doesnt manage to eat quite as `tidily` as everyone else, which is no fault of her own at all,she has been asked not to return for anymore meals at her favourite restaurant...right or wrong decision by the management ??

That is very bad of the restaurant to do that, they should never drive away their customers, what happened to basic human kindness. Why, does she eat that badly?

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I think that the restaurant owners seemed to think that she didnt eat tidily enough,or quietly enough, and that her table manners would put others off..and the trade would slow down ..but this could well have a reverse effect, when people read about the decision that has been made their could be quite a few who would say that because of the discriminatory procees used that they also wouldnt feel comfortable eating in that restaurant either.Indded I hope that is the effect that is does cause!

I wonder if it was the opinion of the management or if other diners had commented? Either way, I'm sure it contravenes the equality and diversity legislation.I appreciate that, if other diners were indeed 'put off' and consequently chose not to patronise the establishment, the owners stood to lose money but I'm sure the situation could have been dealt with more sensitivity so... wrong decision.
I was talking to a man the other week who told me he had been 'barred' from a local take away because 'you shake too much'.... he suffers from Parkinsons disease.

myLot reputation of 63/100. Lucky_strike (404)  4 years ago

Perhaps the other diners had commented her.
If the management done it,it´s very bad PR,and the restaurant can loose a lot

I am hoping that it has the opposite effect and that because of the steps taken by the restaurant that they will lose trade.Im sure the disability discrimination act has been contravened. There are many people out there with physical disability and learning disabilities, that is a part of life that we have to take on board. The way in which their disabilities affect their eating habits is something that can be handled with the kid glove effect,as you have pointed out.

I realize management is in a difficult position. I generally feel like the majority rules -- that is, if it's a case of inconviencing many people or only one. But in this case, if the woman has been a regular visitor, I think management made a mistake. Perhaps she shouldn't be put right in the center of the restaurant, but I think it's very cruel to ban her because other people are more concerned with this woman's problems eating than paying attention to their own meal.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I agree with the points that you are making. The owners have acted selfishly and I hope that this will rebound on them, causing other diners not to frequent their restaurant. There was a sensitive way around the problem, and with a little thought they could have attained success. What do we do with anyone who doesnt fit the bill?..they have dirty hair..they have body odour..they havent cleaned their teeth...the list is endless..all of these things listed could be quite repulsive to other diners..so are they going to start having spot checks on all of these things???lolol

ruby222,

What in world is wrong with people these days, they should ask themselves what if they were disabled. As for the management he should have told these people who were complaining to go eat some where else. I would boycott the resturant.

I agree,I wouldnt have taken to this kindly either..there are ways to handle certain situations and there are ways that it should have never been handled, and they chose the wrong route.I certainly hope that nothing ever befalls those who baaned this customer...as they may find that their social life will be somwewhat limited due to being asked not to go to places!!!

That is a WRONG decision by management. That is discrimination.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

It is and im sure we will hear more about this case.

I'm sure we will too. As we should.

myLot reputation of 43/100. william2233 (216)   ranked 11,025 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I agree with halynn, That is discrimination.

If she is up set she should post a blog on the issue naming this place.
they could have put in another place like a booth facing opposite from others.
and explain to her why?

myLot reputation of 94/100. halynn (657)   ranked 1,079 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

Yes, she could do that & also she could sue, protest-whatever she wanted to do i'm sure she could & would have grounds to do it. I have been in the health care field for many yrs. I know 1st hand how some of these ppl can be & i think it's very ridiculous how some handicapped are mistreated. Grant it there are some that are rude but u know sometimes all they need is for someone to show them some kindness & compassion. Why should this restaurant make her leave & not return. Why not tell the patrons that are complaining about her not to return. This woman has just as much right to go to a restaurant & enjoy a meal as anyone else.

myLot reputation of 94/100. halynn (657)   ranked 1,079 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I'm very curious as to which restaurant this was & where it's located. Do their local business owners & city officials condone this sort of behavior/treatment? Is their local DHSS & regional center aware of this?

As I imagine the name of this restaurant will be plastered all over the papers when they report the story, I guess that makes it a bad decision for the management!! Not all publicity is good!

I'm sure the restaurant could have found some other way around this 'problem' without barring her.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

Yes MOO..there are tactful ways around every problem ,but they didnt seem to stop to look for one..they went in feet first. The press will obviously have a field day with this, and the local press will surely be up in arms..I just said in another post...should spot checks on ability to `eat tidily` be in place before they let you in the door...you chew the cud on that Ducky.

myLot reputation of 94/100. GreenMoo (4030)   ranked 873 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I hope they don't do spot checks. that'll be my dearly beloved barred before he even gets past the starter!

This is just horrible! There is no excuse for this restaurant's actions. I thought that this kind of action was called discrimination. Oh boohoo, the other diners have to be a little uncomfortable, well, I'm sure they'll get over it.. it's not as if they are disabled. But seriously, ok here's the thing, when I go to a restaurant I rarely look at other people, so if people would just go in, eat, and mind their own business maybe this wouldn't be an issue. People are way too accepting of this kind of discrimination. I feel so bad for this woman. :(

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

We went out for a meal at teatime last night,to a very nice place, now I didnt spend all of my time looking around to see who was doing what, and who was munching away tidily!!In fact I was chattering away to my hubby, and we were pretty deep in conversation..so this is a very good point that you have raised here...if I was to be asked who was dining and how they were dining from last night, well the only comment I could make was that the lady behind me had Lemon tatrt for her dessert, and lolol..thats because I plainly remember it being said, and I though it sounded good!!so your point is a good one!!..why dont those people get on and eat their own meals and mind their own business!!!

myLot reputation of 98/100. sudalunts (4245)   ranked 91 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

I agree with you, if the diners were minding their own business, they would have no time to notice what this woman was doing.
She couldn't have been more annoying than loud people talking on cell phones in the restaurant or crying children.
I am sure she was not in the restaurant all day long, and even if she did go for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so what. Some people are so cruel and will complain about anything.

That is obviously a bad idea on the mangaments part and if I had the money and could find someone willing to help me, I would sue the restaurant. If this woman is a regular customer, she enjoys their food and enjoys eating there then she's paying them money. She didn't have to eat there. Is one customer really worth nothing to places anymore? I wouldn't let the place get away with that kind of thing myself. I'd definitely want to do something about it because that's rude. She can't help being disabled. It's not her fault. But those people sure are making it seem like it's her fault and making her a second or third class citizen because she apparently is not good enough to eat in their restaurant.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

Like you im always wanting to protect the underdog ,and this poor customer must have felt very upset, imagine when you have a disability that is on showw to the world,to then be reminded in a cold and callous way that that disability is not welcome in that establishment! It is just totally out of order, and im hoping that that person will indeed take a step to stand her ground and go forward and let everyone know what mealy mouthed owners these people are!

myLot reputation of 98/100. rosedust82 (1205)   ranked 3,014 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

This is just not right. I mean the woman has her rights as well and she has been a very good customer. I can just imagine the embarrassment she felt when the management told her this. I wish that other people would take up her case and fight for her rights in her behalf. I can't believe people would be this cruel.

Whoa! What on earth were they thinking? The management should be aware of their social responsibilities towards their customers. I don't think all their diners were annoyed by the disabled lady. Well, maybe a couple or so but not all. They didn't have to ask the lady to leave nor never to come back. They can come up with a way to attend to her and at the same time satisfy their other customers. It was definitely a wrong decision.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

Social responsibilities..well they obviously wernt aware as owners of this restauarant that they had any!!and they were also very lacking in tact and diplomacy...these stituations can virtually always be overcome, and if they werent able to get their sact together and come up with a solution acceptable to all parties ..then they need their heads reading!!

I can't believe that anyone would be so cruel to someone who is disabled. If people don't like to see the way she eats (Whats she do use her feet?), then don't look at her. Its that simple. The should put themselves in her place. Wonder what they would do if someone told them they couldn't come back because they were too sloppy? It would be a whole different story then. It was definitely a WRONG decision on the managements part!

myLot reputation of 86/100. ruby222 (2574)   ranked 979 out of 32,957 in life  4 years ago

An earlier post made a very good point too..along your lines..why were the other diners not concentrating on there own table and the food that they were eating, usually when you go out for sometihng to eat you are quite wrapped up in whats happening to you,and I very rarely for one would make a point of `gawping` at other people to watch what they were doing!!!it was a very bad decision ...and it should be made clear to them by someone too!!
