I just found out my husband and I will be traveling to London next year! |
|
I am so excited right now! We will be traveling to London in March of next year and I want to make sure to see more of the sights. We went to London back several years ago, I think it was in the early 90s. I went to Buckingham Palace, Harrod's and saw "Les Miserables" in the theater district. It was so wonderful!
What would you do and want to see if you were going to London? I will be starting my "research" on the city again soon, so any and all ideas are welcome. I'd love to hear from some mylotters who live in the U.K. Ideas, please!
Thanks.

I also enjoyed Madame Tussauds and the British museum. Also, another must see is Westminster Abbey. I'm sure British natives can tell you their favorites also.

PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Thanks, snowy22315. I actually have seen the Tower of London and it was awesome and the history there is unbelievable! Also, spent nearly a whole day in Westminster Abbey and it's great.
We did go to a British Museum. I think it was a history museum. We didn't go to any art museums, though. I'd definitely like to do that this time. The Madame Tussaud idea is also a great one. I'm gonna write that one down.
Thanks, snowy22315.

2. sunnflr (877) | 1 year ago | Congratulations on the trip! My husband and I would love to go over there, but if we ever get to we want to see England, Scotland, and Ireland..lol. I'm sure you'll find lots to take pictures of. I'd have to buy a huge memory card if I went!

|
PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Thanks for the congrats. I want to do plenty of upfront research so that we have a good plan for what we want to see while in London. I'll be taking some pictures, that's for sure.
I may even buy a new camera as my current camera requires a PhD in photography to get a decent picture! It cost a fortune and I think I'd rather just have a simple to operate $200 camera like a Sony Cybershot or something.

3. kimbers867 (1183) | 1 year ago | If I had the opportunity to visit London, the one site that I would love to see is the memorial to Diana! I'm sure the ambience is much better than how it is portrayed on TV.
Lucky you!

|
PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Hi kimbers867. I love Princess Diana! I thought the memorial for her was on an island somewhere. I didn't realize there was something like that on the mainland. I'll have to check into that. Great idea! Thanks for your response.

|
kimbers867 (1183) | 1 year ago | She is buried on an island at her brother's estate, use to be their dad's. But I know they made a memorial park with running water in London somewhere.
What does your husband do, that allows you to travel to London?
If you find the info, will you post it here. I don't have much time today or I would be looking for it.

PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Hello Reesers. I will definitely check in to the London Pass thing. It sounds like you got a decent deal for it. When we went before, we rode the tubes everywhere. They are so easy to understand and we never got lost even once. I think we saw Kensington Palace, but didn't go inside it. We also saw changing of the guard, which I believe was at Buckingham Palace.
I'm not familiar with the London Eye. I'll check that out on the internet. Yes, Madam Tussauds is definitely on the list this time.
Thanks for your ideas, Reeser. Take Care.

5. wondericequeen (4416) | 1 year ago | Wow, it must be exciting for you! I have always wanted to go to the UK and France but I never saved enough, hopefully I could fulfill my dream really soon. You still got quite a few months to do research and stuff and then you could enjoy yourself in the fabulous place.

PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Hi wondericequeen. Yes, we are very much looking forward to the trip, even though the flights will be the pits. Keep saving and maybe you will be taking your dream trip someday soon.
I love doing the upfront research for a trip. That's at least half the fun! I appreciate your response.

6. ellie333 (6792) | 1 year ago | Oh PearlGrace, How wonderful for you to be visiting the UK, I used to live just outside London before I moved to the West Country. It is full of life and just so much to see. I would take a river cruise along the Thames and then you could see some of the great sights and buildings from there. There is the Tower of London steeped in history, Madame Tussauds and just so many museums to visit too. There are some amazing parks like Hyde Park and London Zoo also. It really all depends on what you like. I am sure you will have an incredible time whatever you choose to do. Ellie:D

PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Yes, ellie333, I will be in your backyard one of these days! Loved your suggestion to take a river cruise on the Thames. We could see the architecture of the city and take some good pictures. We did go to the Tower of London before and it was truly magnificent. We spent practically a whole day there.
Also, we visited a couple of parks but I can't remember if Hyde Park was one of them. We went to a park where people can just start talking about any subject they want and people will gather round and listen.
Madame Tussauds is a place I'd love to go. Hope to do some shopping also.
Thanks for responding.

PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Hi katiedoubleu. Of course, I want everyone's suggestions. Yes, we really enjoyed the Tower of London on our previous trip. It was pretty awesome, I must say. Also, Westminster Abbey was fantastic. I don't remember going in other churches, but we might have walked by some. If you think of other suggestions, please do let me know.
Thanks for your response.

8. paid2write (4134) | 1 year ago | Hi PearlGrace. It's wonderful news that you will be visiting London next year.
I lived in that great city for more than twenty years and now I'm not too far away on the south coast.
When you start researching for your trip you can always contact me if you have any questions and I will be happy to try and help. You don't say how long your stay will be. There is so much to do and see in London, you will never have enough time for everything!
I think you should visit Shakespeare's Globe on the south bank of the river. Even if you don't see a play there, you can enjoy the exhibition and go inside the playhouse, which is reconstructed exactly as it was 400 years ago.
| |
| |
|
|
PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Hi paid2write. That is cool that you lived in London for 20 years. Bet you know all the best haunts! We are not yet sure how long the visit will be as my husband will be working 2 days and he may also be invited to speak in Scotland and Wales. So, we will try to stay 4 or 5 days at each place before/after he works.
The suggestion to see Shakespeare's Globe is a wonderful idea! I think I've seen something about that in one of our travel books. I've got to get them out and start perusing the pages.
Thanks for your offer to provide more info about places to see. I do appreciate that and I might take you up on it. Take care, paid2write.

9. jillhill (11660) | 1 year ago | I hope someday to go to England too....I love history and so seeing the palace etc. would be so much fun. I can skip the castles though...when I was in the Netherlands I saw too many! LOL...they are all about the same! I do love finding out about different cultures...so hope to go back to Europe sometime in the future!
| |
| |
|
|
PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | Gosh, jillhill, I bet a trip to the Netherlands was quite interesting! That would be a great place to visit. Frankly, I would love to see any and every part of Europe. There is so much history there. Plus, the sights to see are just incredible, I'm sure.
I, too, get in to the whole cultural thing. In fact, I always try to learn the language and my husband gets so impressed with my ability to say "hello" and "how are you" in the language. What's so great about England is that I can understand most of what they are talking about without any study!
| |
|
|
jillhill (11660) | 1 year ago | That is the best part. I learn enough to get through airports! I learned how to say please, thank you, speak english please etc....went through the Amsterdam airport scared to death but they all speak english anyway..the only time I had a language barrier is when we went to Belguim...and I really didn't know what I was ordering off menues! LOL...I also went just into Germany but alreay speak some of that as my grandparents spoke german.....it's so much fun to learn about and experience other countries! I know you'll have soooo much fun!

10. urbandekay (4295) | 1 year ago | London of course has many sights of interest but I hope you are not to busy there to consider taking a trip to some smaller towns and villages. We have a saying here, "You don't enter England till you leave London." English life is rooted in the countryside and small towns and villages not in the cities.
all the best urban
| |
| |
|
|
PearlGrace (1883) | 1 year ago | I think I understand what you mean, urbandekay. On our first trip to England, we took tours of Bath, went to the countryside, and saw Stonehenge. We went to Salisbury to a church that was quite large and had a lot of famous people entombed. I must say, the countryside was breathtakingly beautiful with its rolls of hay scattered all over the pathwork of land. Lovely.
Thanks for reminding me of the importance of seeing sights not only in London. Take care.

| myenergy (33) | 1 year ago | My daughter and I traveled to London last year for the first time and I enjoyed every single minute of it. We did the normal London sites, Buckingham Palace, Etc. In fact if you closely at my profile picture, that's the Houses of Parliament in the back ground. We also went to Bath and visited Stonehenge. We also went to a place called LaCock Abbey. That's where they filmed a couple of the Harry Potter movies. It's also where the George Inn is located. It was built in 1361 and is one of the most historic pubs in the country. I enjoyed London and England very much. The history is unbelievable. I can't wait to go back again.
