I want to apologize to all my American friends, I'm so embarrassed.

It was an embarrassing thing to see at the MLS soccer game last night. There were some horrible fans who booed the American national anthem. I couldn't believe it. I'm embarrassed for my city, and my country, I want to say that we aren't all a bunch of boorish idiots. It turns out that perhaps they thought the Canadian anthem wasn't going to get played, even if that was the case, it was completely classless and unacceptable. Again, to anyone who may have seen it, I'm sorry for the behaviour here in Toronto. The vast majority of Canadians are happy to have the USA as our closes neighbour.

I am not a sports fan, but I do not like rudeness. Maybe you can put the blame on the anti=Americanism that was populated by the former Liberal government. My younger son was going with a girl whose father was very anti=American and I was glad when they broke up. I mean if the Canadian anthem does not get played, why don;t they sing it? I love the States. I wish I could visit it more often. I mean this anti American has got to stop. What do they prefer to be friendly with a country who is known for its human rights violations, China?

The anthem was played after, and sung beautifully.

I'm Canadian too bonbon and I read Warmington's report with interest.
First - I add my apologies to our American Friends.
Second - the line up of the singing of the anthems was poorly planned. Our Mounties should have come out at the BEGINNING of the event and/or an announcement of the lineup of the anthems should have been made.
Thirdly - in a way I don't blame our Canadians. We are becoming more vocal about our pride in our Country and last night's event showed clearly how vocal we are becoming. Did you notice that the Canadians stayed 'quiet' during the playing of God Save The Queen? We still have our respect for our origins.
Toronto residents are very savvy people. There is a lot that we as Canadians have to be resentful for where the American policies are concerned. So I am not surprised at 'our' booing their anthem, though it certainly showed a lack of class that we Canadians have always been known for.
Such is the modern world today - respect is becoming a thing of the past. How sad.
Again my apologies to my American friends - YOU are not responsible for the policies of your politicians any more than we are.

It's just so UN-Canadian of us. It's unfortunate that it happened the way it did.

You're right bonbon, it is very Un-Canadian, but sadly just look around you. Attitudes are changing. Levels of respect and consideration are on the wane. We are not the same and we are not getting better. We are succumbing to the society/technology/polictical climate, we live in and there is no longer such a thing as Toronto The Good anymore - and that decline is country wide, believe me. I lived in Toronto in the 70's when you could walk from the Lakeshore up Yonge Street to Lawrence Ave. on a summer evening and NEVER have to worry about gangs, drive bys, molestation or anything else. They used to close Yonge street off for a number of blocks and have an ongoing 'block' party in the summer. It was one of the most wonderful cities to live in then. Sam the Record Man, The Eaton Centre was brand new, The Hard Rock Cafe, The Zanzibar Club, fifties style diners and charm and culture all over the place for the browsing. I loved it. My son lives in downtown Toronto now and has to take a taxi the 8 blocks from his work to his home after his restaurant closes at night, just to stay safe! Outrageous. And so very sad.

Being from Canada myself, I want to thank you for being the considerate person you are by clarifing this matter. I knew nothing about this but I want to support bonbon664 in the hope you will all know Canadians are the same as any nation, we all have our good people and what would the world be without our idiots? They're in all the world. Personally I have met a few people from the USA and I have always got along well with everyone. Life really is what we make of it.

Well I follow soccer, and to be honest I though it was extremely rude what they did. I understand being upset because they thought they weren't going to play the Canadian National Athem, but to be so disrespectful to another countries Anthem is just unexcusable.

I am an American. If it makes you feel any better, when I was younger I was very interested in baseball, and our team played against a Canadian team. I actually booed the Canadian national anthem.
Well I'm older now, and no longer act so childish. Actually my very best friend is Canadian, she lives in Ottawa. It's a beautiful city to visit. I've visited Toronto a couple of times as well.

Wow, Mr. Warmington has a way with words. Please don't be embarrassed for the misunderstanding of others. At sporting events, tempers, testosterone, pride and mob mentality tend to run rampant and stuff happens that is not always polite but not meant with any true malice in mind.
Your apology is unnecessary but the thought is very much appreciated bonbon. *blowing kisses up Canada way*

A crowd very easily turns into a mindless mob when something like a match is being played with two very distinct sides. I am sure the majority of those who booed don't normally do that and love their American neighbors but a game is something different it seems. Different rules apply and officials need to be vigilant that no spark is lit that could lead to a conflagration of unwanted emotions. Cheers!!

I am American and I am not mad that they booed our anthem. But I do have to clear something up. They may have thaught that the Canadian anthem was not going to be played because it was played second. But it has been done that way for years and not just in Canada. When it is hockey season and the Canadian teams are playing in America. We play the Canadian anthem before we play ours. It is custom to play the opposing teams anthem first. I don't know why it just is.

Apparently, the Canadian flag didn't come out at first either, and some fans jumped to conclusions.

Hi Bonbon664,
do not stress over this, and you shouldn't be embarrassed, you had nothing to do with it...unfortunately there are obtuse people everywhere. And by the way, they should have had the Canadian Anthem up first!!
~Stay cool, stay well and never, never stress~

Well I live in the US and it wouldn't bother me. Some people get caught up in the heat of the moment and don't really think about things. And honestly let's face it America really hasn't done much to be proud of lately. So I personally wouldn't worry about it, and I'm sure that your friends here on mylot that are from the states are not going to hold you responsible for the fans actions.

I hate it when people get booed at a sports game. I get embarrassed when the people booing are from a place I live or go to school. It's so unsportsman-like. I don't like it when peole try to distract basketball players when they are making a free-throw. It's impolite.

I saw watching the Evening news and saw the Article tonight. From what I could Gather the Organizers of the MLS soccer game forgot to Bring out the Canadian Flag, and consequently the Canadian Anthem was not played.I think the Canadian spectators can be forgiven for booing the US national Anthem, when they were being totally Ignored. The Organizers of the Event were remiss, and should issue a Public apology for their Inept behavior.
