I am seriously considering this option and I just want to know what you think and how it works.

I have one very important tip. Stay far far away from Publish America. They are a scam and you will definitely be sorry if you have anything to do with them.
Oh and don't go with self publishing until you have exhausted every chance of having your writing actually published.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Oh, I intend to query and submit until my fingers bleed from typing so much, but that can only last so long. I believe in my book, but I am not sure how to get a publishing house to agree. Finding an agent is an option, but it is hard to do that too and know you are getting a quality agent.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Now, now, I am with Publish America. For a first time writer, it's completly legit, you don't have to pay millions just to get the book published. Now, I'd say find yourself an agent for the book. That's what I would do.

but, STAY AWAY FROM SELF PUBLISHING, unless you want to be broke!

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Oh, did you frame your $1.00 advance? Have you gotten one of those $0.00 royalty checks?
Do you have a lollypop tree with the title of your book printed on the sticks? Are you good friends with pipe smoker or the French woman?

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

lol irish, you sure can come up with some comebacks!

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

The information he gave was so off base and dare I say either a lie or he's naive on how it really works to be published.
I'll give him a break and think it is just the PA brain washing that has gotten to him.
PA is a scam. Pure and simple. Some learn it quickly, others learn it but are in such denial they continue to lie to others to save their own face.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Gee, Irish, what crawled up your butt and died?*lol*
I have a qualified agent and have submitted my book to a publishing agency, not PA, I just needed a place to start my research in the publishing world and PA was the least riskful on my part. Savvy?

Thank you.

At least it is better than paying 10 thousand dollars for some other publishers to get your book out. No, honestly, someone wanted me to do that.

I must ask though, how would you know was PA does? you are so against them I am wondering if you had dealings with them yourself? Oh well, I have heard that you can be a hypocrit and still be right...

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

I want to see a bill from Penguin, Dell, and other publishers that a writer received to have their book published. How much did J.K. Rowlings have to pay to get the Harry Potter books published? I'll wait while you come up with that information.

Who's your agent? I'm curious to know if he/she even knows you had a PA book.

Actually, I was smart enough to research and found out the truth about PA before I submitted anything to them. I know people who have had things printed by them and what they had to go through to get their rights back. The only ones making money are PA, not the writers.

You just keep on drinking the kool-aid.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Kool aid? Did you happen to get caught in a kimkins scam?

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Not familiar with that.
The kool-aid reference has to do with anything that obviously is a scam, lie, etc. but people still fall for it despite the evidence that it is no good. Like PA, for instance.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Actually that is what I meant. There was koolaid references with the kimkins diet because all she sells you for the steep price of $60 is a starvation diet of 500 calories or less and bootcamp abuse exercises complete with colorful language. There is a big legal dispute in California over it.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

My agent is my own buisness. Our contract states confidentiality, thank you very much. Gee, if this is how you treat strangers who were only offering freindly advice, I hate to think how you treat your family? how fun are you to live with anyway, Irish?

Just because you believe you are right, doesn't mean that I am not right as well. We come from two different parts of life and clearly clash, respectfully, you ned to curb that mouth of yours because a) I too have the right to free speach, just like you, and b) you won't make a whole lot of freinds if you go and insult people willy nilly. YOu may think that I am retarded for chosing PA. but, it was my choice, not yours.

You chose a different path than I, I respect that. Now please, a little respect from you to me isn't much to ask. But, I shant delude myself, I don't think a flamboyant, tardy-gated, distempered whey-face as yourself would give me such a concideration.

Now, please excuse me as I go spend my time on something productive!

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Whatever, but you are misleading people and if you're happy with PA then that is great. Be honest instead of telling them it will cost them to have a book published. Publishing is far different than being printed by PA.
If you actually have an agent that's great too. I only asked because the legitimate ones tend to steer clear of anything to do with PA. If I had known you were so touchy I wouldn't have asked.

You can't argue my points so you have to insult. Why am I not surprised?

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Ha! YOU started it by saying oh how smart you were because YOU just happened to do a bit more research, insulted me by inplying that I would mislead people. PA has over a thousand authors and if you are savvy in the buisness side of things you can honestly sell you book and get a lot in royalties. I can argue your points becuase it is called 'FREEDOM OF SPEACH!'

Get with the program mate, savvy?

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3036)   ranked 156 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Evidently freedom of speech includes bad spelling for you.

So sorry you can't deal with me being smarter than you. Life sucks, don't it?

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Your excuses are weabling precariously off the cliff! In fact, I see them splashing about and drowning at this very moment.
(and, you are not smarter than me, which is very apparent at the moment, by the way)
Anyway, with publishing, I say go with the people that you feel will benefit you the most, be nice to them and get some brownie points, especially for a new author, this is important because if they see that you work well with them and are open to suggestions, they may just take you on. This is a buisness relationship, remember that.

To be honest, it's never appealed to me. The trouble with publishing yourself is that there's only one person the book is guaranteed to be a success with. I'd rather have a rejection letter from an editor/publisher (and possibly some constructive criticism) than pay blindly to have something printed that no-one would buy. And they will publish it, if you're paying for the privilege; You could write out the word 'bananas' 50,000 times and the self-publishing sites you see on Google adsense would still take your money and run you off as many copies as you like.

As far as I'm aware also, with self-publishing, you're on your own in terms of distribution, getting stores to stock your book, etc. Which certainly wouldn't be the case if your work was accepted on its merits.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Yes, I suppose this is true enough. I am just in the ideas stage right now. Book is still being written as we speak, so I am not ready to submit, but it is always good to have a plan of action. I wish I knew of an up to date website that has the lists of publishing houses and literary agents. They library usually carries a book, but ours just has one from 2003.

myLot reputation of 76/100. Wolfechu (891)   ranked 612 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Not a website, but you'd be after something like http://tinyurl.com/5rfl3j

Not
the one I'm used to, but then I haven't bought one in a couple of years, and when I did, it was the UK version. This or something very like it in the recommendations would have exactly what you want, though.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Yes, that is the one I need. I may be able to get it through inner-library loan. I am sure another library would have it.

Well, if you ask me the greatest problem to overcome this is the cost. But if you have the spare money then I urge you to do so. No matter what others may say as long as you are passionate with what you are doing then I doubt it can go wrong, and on the slight chance that it does you'll learn a valuable lesson so there is really no bad site do this now is there? Mind if I ask what book are you trying to publish?

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Well of course I want a legit site to work with. In most cases I have seen, if they are charging it is fees I can't afford to throw away on someone that doesn't help me make the best book we can make. If I am paying to publish, then I expect quality all the way.

My book is a fictional historic based tween novel. I am targeting 9-14 year olds with this series. I am fairly certain there aren't any other books like it on the market.

myLot reputation of 94/100. mobilecubie (504)   ranked 522 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Well, when you do decide to give it a try I hope all goes well for you.:) I hope you get to publish soon.

What genre is your book? You have to be very careful with self-publishing. You need to have an editor.

My book, Cat-House Sonnets, 100 poems celebrating cats, was published by Jorlan Publishing. They did an excellent job and were a joy to work with. They had an artist do the cover and a layout expert to design the inside. Check it out at
www.jorlanpublishing.com/Cat-HouseSonnets.htm

My book won the Muse Medallion Award from Cat Writers Association and the Best Poet from Preditors & Editors.

You have to market your book yourself even if you go with a standard publisher. They accept very few books and take years to go through the process. You need to find out where your market is and do plenty of work to sell a book.

I wish you lots of luck.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

I do know about genres. And I know different publishers focus on different areas. Some just take picture books for a certain age, some just take adult fiction, some just take chapter books for older kids, some take a little of everything. I get that. I have done my research before, but I just am not sure how I want to go about doing it and now that I got what I feel is a great novel idea, I don't want it to get buried under indecision like the others have.

I will have to check that site out. I know it will take quite awhile for publishing houses to get things going. It is a lot to think about.

One of the easiest ways is to create it in pdf format and distribute it in an ebook format, of course you charge for it to be downloaded by anyone who is interested, but there is the marketing side of it that you would have to do yourself as part of the deal this way, which can be quite difficult.

At least if you get an actual offline publishing deal the publishing company usually handles all the marketing.

myLot reputation of 96/100. tanniebabe78 (747)   ranked 1,247 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

Well, I will first and foremost try to get it published through a house. That is my goal. I just don't want them to change it too much. Then again, I can just be stubborn like my favorite, brilliant authors. I am quite excited about this and will do what it takes to get it out there. And if that means I end up doing all the work myself, then I will. I am giving myself a whole year to get it through a publishing company. Whether a direct submit or agented.

myLot reputation of 73/100. waynet (1053)   ranked 334 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

People talk well about it but the truth is its difficult to make any money this way.
First off a lot of these publishers just take your money and print the copies and then lose interest in selling the work.
I also knew a couple people here in Trinidad who wrote books, then paid to print them and went around selling the copies themselves.
It was a lot of work, mostly on foot, and the pay was minimal.
The only truly viable way to publish is to have the publisher pay you and make money for everybody selling the copies as a business concern.
That leaves out Vanity publishing.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Johnnypenn (174)   ranked 261 out of 6,387 in writing  1 year ago

I hear you. I'm not savvy with the whole selling it on my own thing, some selfpublishers give you the option of some pretty nifty ofptions that help you sell the book in question. I'm going with this one off of Amazon.com where all you have to pay for is a preview of the book, and then they'll sell the book online once you upload it. And maybe if the book is overly popular, they'll print it and put it on real bookshelves of bookstores.

I self-publish my own small, poetry zines. I simply lay it out the way I want it and network with a local artist to do my cover. Then my local copy store runs it off for me. I sell them at local, arts events and my favorite local, independent bookstore lets me sell them there, too. I also a lulu.com account. It's free and print on demand. As much a don't like the tone of one responders to your discussion; I hear bad things about Publish America, too.
