I am an exclamation mark junkie! Is this a bad thing??

I have been reading through many of my responses and discussions posted and have realized that I tend to use exclamation marks a LOT! I guess I do this to place emphasis on certain things I have said; much the same way as I put some words in uppercase to put an emphasis on those specific words also.
Is it annoying as a reader to see so many exclamation marks? Or does using them create the attention or emphasis on the sentence or word I am trying to highlight or make stand out? (As I seem to think it does!) Please let me know as I may need to calm myself down a little in this regard!

Haha! I don't find it annoying at all unless there is multiple of them. Like this!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to have a huge obsession with exclamation marks where I would end every sentence with "..!!" in italics. People incessantly told me how frustrating it was so I broke the habit on my own.

Not necessarily. THat makes your style of writing and it's ok too. Personally punctuation signs either in abundance or scarce don't really bother me one way or another. I guess it might be annoying for some people, but personally I pay more attention to the content, what is being written, rather than how it is emphasized.
Come to think of it I tend to be a smillie junkie LOL

I've been trying to restrain myself LOLLLLL
And for me , yes , it is the content. I tend to right = and read - as if it is a conversation and sometimes punctuation marks that might not be conventionally places really add meaning to what is written. But after responding to you discussion I checked myLot guidelines and one item on the "don't do" section says for us not to "use all-caps or excessive punctuation." However I have never seen mylot creating a problem with member just for using a bit more exclamation marks. They never gave me trouble for my smillies either :):):)

I am just like you. i do use exclamation marks a lot. i wanna put an emphasis on most replies i do. it does not mean i am angry. sometimes, i just mean that i am excited, happy and glad. i don't have anything against people who use exclamation marks often, too. i do understand their side.

Well so far everyone seems OK with the fact that I constantly use them. This is obviously a good thing for me because it now means that I can be myself without having to have thoughts in the back of my mind to stop this every time I write something! Thanks for responding.

i also tend to use a bit more punctuation than necessary to point out my points
i realize that it may be a bit annoying; i'd never tolerate it if i was reading a book or the newspaper - but this is pretty informal - and i tend to type very much like i would write a letter...just try to get things going, without a lot of drawn-out, properly written sentences and paragraphs.

I don't seem to di this anywhere but on this site for some reason..... And at least it is better than "text speak"! That IS one thing that annoys me; when people use the same abbreviations on here that they would use when sending a text message. Thanks for responding.

It doesn't matter as nobody pay attention to exclamation marks.I usually read only the matter and not grammer. It certainly doesnt create any nuisance.

You're an exlamation point junkie? Who knew? Does this lessen or take from the quality of your writing? Isn't there something worse? What if you were a question mark junkie?

lol. Just a self observation! Maybe if I was a question mark junkie instead then maybe this would be a good thing because it would mean that I would have posted a LOT of questions for people to answer and will increase my responses! Thanks for responding.

I am very glad to find that so few people are annoyed with it, because sometimes I look at something I've written where every sentence in the entire paragraph has an exclamation point at the end and I feel like a bubbly grinning idiot. Then I have to sit there trying to decide which sentence I feel the least enthusiastic about so I can remove at least one. It's like cutting out my tongue or my heart or something!

Oh I am glad too! You have no idea! lol. The last thing I wanted to do was to have to rethin entirely the way I write and the mannerisms I use. To do this all the time would have surely taken some of the spontaneity out of it! Thanks for responding.

Oh my, I didn't realize that I'm an exclamation junkie too! I guess when a person is in mylot, it feels like we are conversing instead of just typing and exclamation marks help convey how our tone of voice would be. Let's just say we are a lively, animated, passionate group and use this punctuation mark to get our thoughts heard! Heres's to !!!!!!.

I think this is a matter of personaility. Your personaility shows in your writing style. I like to use exclamation marks a lot also. I don't think it's annoying as a reader to see others use them I think it actually makes me more interested in the writing.

Exclamation points are fine here on Mylot and they don't bother me at all. The only thing they are not good for are writing in articles. I write for a living and my main income right now comes from writing articles online. I never did use exclamation points in my articles so it was never a habit I had to break. However, some people have been known to do it in articles and it is really a no-no. It's just not good writing to use even one exclamation point when writing professionally. So I would say don't worry about it here on Mylot but don't do it if you write articles. Now I also write fiction and some exclamation points are good in fiction to show excitement or to really emphasis a point. So no worries here on Mylot. :)

I definitely agree that there is a time and a place for them and the informality of myLot is as good a place as any! I don't write for a living per say; but in a sense I guess I do because in my job I write daily for marketing materials, proposals, business plans, white papers and other documentation and I very rarely use exclamation marks in these instances. Sometimes for brochures or other marketing materials yes; but I consider this OK on these instances of not overdone because it can help get a point across. Thanks for responding and good luck with your writing!

I do this one all the time. I also have a habit of putting 'eh!' at the end of something a lot of the time. It doesn't bother me at all though if I see a lot of exclamation marks in a response or a discussion. Ellie :D
