Curious George Here  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people 4 years ago

I just responded to a discussion that asked if you judged people because of their poor grammar. My response was, I want to correct it , but I don't judge that person on the basis of bad grammar. There are people from all over the world using this site. Some use the English language very well, some want to learn, and make a great effort to do so. I admire that.
This discussion got me wondering. If English is not your first language, do you want someone to correct your grammar, or would you be offended?

PPffttt, english IS my first language and I have a very dear friend, on the Lot, who corrects it for me! lol He's been an editor for years and I love him. Admission: Sometimes I write "Texan" just to give him a nervous start to his lovely day! heeee heehheeheheheheheheeeeew00t

Now that got me thinking Dahlin' Sis Irish. If not Texan, what?

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

*LOL* I write Texan, sometimes, too. Just the mental image of someone cringing at that makes me giggle. I know I don't always use correct grammar, but for the most part, it is my punctuation that makes people nuts.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

p1ke, HUH?

Bo, yea, I tend to like these wee dots.........
and I like these !!!!!!!!
oh and these "" ''
hee hee

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Nope I'm still lost. I thought that someone from Texas is a Texan. Are they not? Perhaps they are a Texas'n or a Texie or just a plain old Tex! Which is it please? I am deeply frustrated now. Clearly it's not a term that should be used and I do!! I don't want to offend anyone by saying something that is incorrect.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

No I am a TEXAN, from TEXAS. I was referring to 'speaking Texan'. Such as the lessons I gave you, which you still don't get right, but I feel bad correcting you AGAIN! confused Ok....it's Darh'lin, 'Dahlin' is how they say it in Georgia, or Old Virginny! wink

Please tell em Bo! lol

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

pikey, Texans don't drop their r's. We tend to use hard r's in our words.
*LOL* It took me a minute to figure out who Bo was. Duh!!!
And, I say DaRlin.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Dharlin' Sis Irish. You mean that I have been getting it wrong all this time and you haven't told me!!! Now you think I'm a clutz (or is it Klutz). Blimey O'Reilly. SHOUT at me. I'm daft at best and Stoopid at worst!!! LOL.

Bohemian. It all makes more sense now. I spent ages saying "Dahlin'" when I should have been saying "Dahrlin". I've just been lopping branches off a holly tree. When I get back out boy are they going to wish they'd not grown. There'll be no dropped "r"s all over the place!

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

I've still said it wrong!! See I AM stupid. Darh'lin!!

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

Yea, but we do drop our g's. LOL! "I'm fixin ta go ta town, wanna come?" "Just came back from fishin, caught a whopper, did ya eat yet?" lollol
This is fun, Bo! Give im another un.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

Yea, emphasis on the first syllable, don't drawl it out so much, hard r, drop the g. You got it! Yee hawwwww!

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

Oh no, he ain't heavy, he's my brother! If you follow us around a bit you will see this is ongoing withy p1kie and me! lolHe asked and I am most graciously helping him. When he comes to visit he will fit right in, after we take him to David's Western Wear and outfit him with his hat, jeans and boots. We ain't lettin im tool aroun in any funny shorts, long socks and sandals! wink

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

I NEVER wear socks and sandals. Not done you know. I do have a hat though. A rather fetching bowler hat, goes well with the pin stripe suit and the rolled umbrella. That'll go down rather well in Texas won't it? Jean's? Won't she mind? Boots I do understand. Green wellingtons I expect. Rather! Super! Can't wait.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

I've just looked at David's Western Store on t'internet and I am gobsmacked! I'd need a second mortgage for all that stuff. When I was a boy my mother once cut up a sheepskin coat and made the arms into chaps for me. Boy did I look swell!! LOL.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Spurs. That takes me back. When we first got the internet my nephew came by to have a look. He'd have been about 10 then. He was a fan of a Football team called Tottenham Hotspurs or "Spurs" for short. So we typed "Spurs" into a search engine - pre Google - and what came back was very interesting. Now I'm not sure that Spurs football kit consists of a leather catsuit, 6" heels and a bullwhip. Certainly the young lady wearing it wasn't recognisable as a Spurs player! I've searched, but I've never found that site again. LOL!!

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Irish, especially a cowboy with that charming accent! Can you imagine?

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

If you look at this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iEhV5TOApb4 you'll see that the English can do cowboys - Texan ones at that - really quite quite dreadful. But funny too.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

Bo...grammar? HUH?

P1ke, Good Lord what WAS that? You need to watch Lonesome Dove with Robert Duvall! He's totally HOT!

I prolly shoon't have even started this discussion. Didn't do it to offend anyone. I was just a lil curious. Besides, someone else made me think about it.

English is my first language Bohemian and the only one that I can write in. If someone wants to correct my grammar then I shan't make a fuss provided that it is done in a good and constructive way. I'd never dream of correcting someone else's unless they asked me to or I really did not understand what they had written. I have responded at times "I think what you are saying is....." or "Thank you" when I have no comprehension at all.

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Sometimes, I just want to say, HUH? But, really, if someone is trying to improve their use of English, should we not give them a little boost in the right direction? Of course, in a polite way. I would never be rude about it.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 87 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Provided that we don't patronise them. I try to help Americans all the time of course!! But a little help is fine, but a critique of their complete discussion may be a tad excessive.

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

Well, little man, I don't intend to check every discussion for bad grammar! I haven't the time. I am supposed to be keeping an eye on you, as well!*LOL*

heck, i make gramatical mistakes and spelling mistakes because
i type faster than i think !

I don't think I would correct someone in public. But, if it did not hurt their feelings, I would send them a private message, just to let them know.

If it was done in a rude or condescending manner, I will definitely feel offended.

8. myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19614)   ranked 998 out of 26,919 in people   4 years ago

I think it is silly to judge a person on their grammar, but if they wanted to ask me to help them, I would, There are more things to judge people on, more serious things to be worrying about getting your adverbs and adjectives mixed up and writing its when it should be it's. Besides if a person whose English is in the learning stage, sees how the others write, then they will soon catch on.
So if someone who does not know English want to know, they could just ask and someone will help him or her.

myLot reputation of 94/100. thebohemianheart (2780)   ranked 586 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19614)   ranked 998 out of 26,919 in people  4 years ago

It does seem rather silly. I mean when I am in a hurry, I make mistakes, so if I am bound to why should I get upset if someone who was born in some non-English making country make an error. Besides I never went to University so how can I tell someone who did in another country that he made a mistake.

Hi thebohenmianheart,

I wouldn't corredt because they might get offended and its not plesant when someone do that to you, they are doing very well. I wonder if all the people whose first language is English would they be able to write in other languages?

Tamara

I certainly would not know how to write in any other language. And, I hope you are not offended at the question. I would not do anything to intentionally offend anyone. I was just curious. And, I agree, most are doing very well.

Ofcouse I'm not offended, I'm from the U.K and my fingers seems to work before my brains or is it the other way round as there so many mistakes in my spelling and feel sorry for anyone who is trying to understand what I'm writing about, so I do understand what you are saying and I'm not offended.
