My niece got into the toothpaste. Her mom called poison control. One of the things to watch for is apparently a fever. I think it is from the fluoride. HAs your child ever eaten toothpaste?

My sons are grown and gone, but I'm sure they've swallowed enough in their day just from brushing their teeth. Regular toothpaste is full of junk that isn't good for you. I won't use the commercial toothpaste you find in the stores today, I stick with strictly a natural product.

I am grown and I am sure that even I swallow a lot of toothpaste. I think that is why they sell toothpaste for children. Children's toothpaste says that it is okay to swallow right on the tube. I have found that my kids will not even use the adult stuff because they say it is too 'hot'.

Hey thanks for the heads up about this, I didn't know this at all. Lucky for us she will only use the training toothpaste since she hates the mints, and other flavored ones we have tried.

Hello ersmommy. I did not know that until I read this discussion. So I think that it is a must for the parents to watch out their kids when they are using the paste to brush their teeth. It is better for the parents to teach their kids the correct way of using it instead of swallowing it for the sake of health. Thank you for the information.

My kid hasn't eaten toothpaste, but I did as a child. It can cause fluorosis, which is white spots on the permanent teeth. I didn't have any of my permanent teeth at the time, but the fluoride builds up anyway and shows up when they come in. To this day I still have the white spots, and I always will. Other than that, it shouldn't hurt her. She should have called the dentist, not Poison Control. ANYTHING can give a kid a fever, and anyone can work for a Poison Control hotline. A dentist actually goes to school for his/her job, so I think they are a bit more qualified to say what would happen in pretty much any dental emergency...and I also think eating toothpaste would count as a dental emergency.

Most children have eaten a bit of toothpaste, I think. Just not enough to be a concern.

I'm sure they have once or twice, but not a major amount. I buy them their own toothpaste designed for kids, probably has a lower amount of flouride, and I keep the adult toothpaste up high. They did once get into Tums though. They were only about 2, and I didn't know how much they'd eaten. I just saw the empty bottle, and a bunch of Tums strewn across the floor. I called the poison control and they said they would probably be fine, it didn't seem as if they'd eaten too many. I forget now what they told me to watch for, but just said not to give them any milk, stick with clear liquids for awhile or it could upset their tummy.

My kids have never to my knowledge eaten toothpaste. My daughter will suck the toothpaste off or her toothbrush when she is done brushing, but it is that fruity toddler toothpaste that is ok to swallow.

There's an old trick among school kids if you want to stay home or go home early. Spread some tooth paste on bread...yech! I am sure it can't be good for you but kids will do almost anything to get out of school I guess...
