If an ATHEIST tells you "There is no God!" email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life1 year ago

What will be your reaction?
And what will you say to him/ her?

This discussion is for everybody to respond to, both atheists and believers.

Obviously, atheists will agree to this statement, so I hope you'll respond with your best atheistic manner. Like a "no-care" type of response.

Same goes with the believers. If you want to justify this with a Bible verse or a Koran verse, that's fine.

Ok, I'll go first.

I'm a believer, and either of these three statements will be my response:

1.) "Right, and there's no air to breathe as well!"
2.) "...and there's no explosion that has the ability to make all things unique!"
3.) "No God? So we all came from nothing? An Accident happened in the midst of darkness? Where does colors came from then?"

Good point! The beauty and uniqueness of everything we see is like the remembrance of God for us.

Yes, I agree with all of you, as I'm a Christian also, when you say, look around and see all the beautiful things around you, how can it not be made by God? But alot of people want you to prove that statement and show them where it says that, so they may believe. Its a hard thing to have to do. I myself, believe what I believe, and I know what I know. Its hard to get an unbeliever to understand that.

The world has two faces. A face of a believer and a face of an unbeliever. We'll just have to stay on where we would think we'll fit.

..it actually takes a lot of faith to believe everything we see came about through chance.. or that nothing exploded into everything.. etc, etc. I did a study on this, and was actually quite shocked how little scientific support there is for the modern faith in evolution as origins, but people are taught it, and so, many believe it. I'm always learning new things on this topic too and have come to love science! It's quite amazing and very interesting and enlightening.. I need to update and add more to my study but here is my summary of some very interesting and exciting facts:

by your logic, I could claim the same things are proof of the existance of my Gods, who you do not believe in.

the existance and variety and beauty of life does not prove the existance of one Deity over another.

i'm a Christian so definitely i will not believe that there is no God! i have faith and this faith is enough to believe in the existence of God.. i believe not because that's what was taught by my parents, nor the school, nor the church! i believe that there is God because i can feel His existence in my life! happy

You see, this is a problem in my philosophy of science class.

Why do you believe in God? You wouldn't believe he existed unless religion or school or parents taught you. It's the same reason why I believed at first.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

The same thing with science. You wouldn't know Big Bang and Evolution unless someone taught you about it.

myLot reputation of 92/100. leizlmarie (2480)   ranked 708 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

our parents, the school, the church have introduced God to us but yes, it does not necessarily mean because of that, we believe in God that quick.. i am a Christian ever since i was young, but i was once a Christian by name alone and not by faith! i think that's part of our spiritual life especially when we're young and have so innocent and ignorant mind, and many of us have undergone that stage.. in my case, i have applied those that were taught to me like reciting a prayer and see how it can affect my life.. and yes, through that i have proven the existence of God in my life since i have experienced things i thought i will not have, but miracles through prayers to God do happen! and now, i am claiming i am a full believer of God by name and by faith! happy

The problem with saying you know there is a god because you have faith is that if someone is actually interested in what you believe and want to know why you believe it, they may ask you how you know. If you respond that you know through your faith, it's not a valid answer to them. After all, if they do not believe, how are they to have this faith you would speak of?

I'm an atheist, have been for many years ago.
Used to be 100% believer as well.
Why would a God want so many murders and war in the world and so many straving people. Doesn't make sense if he is meant to care for us so much.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

I believe these things are not God's business. God created us and gave us freewill to do whatever we want.
If a man kills someone, that's the product of his own freewill.
Regarding poverty, it is meant to have a balance in this world.

God will bless someone in order to be a blessing for other people.
It's true that this world is full of negativity, but there's always a God-given opportunity to do good works and make a difference.

myLot reputation of 99/100. likaes (322)   ranked 559 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

If you say your God is omnipotent (all-powerful, he can do everything), as the bible states, he can foretell the future (as a result of his power). If he can see into the future, everything that will be done, has been done (because everything is fixed, because God already knows everything). God is able to see the future, like we see into the past in history.

This provides a bit of a contradiction, doesn't it? You say we have free-will. I contend that if God is able to see in the future, we cannot have free will as everything is already fixed. God knows what you're going to have for breakfast tomorrow, how your day is going to be, what you're going to do. If so, how can you say we have free will, when everything is already planned out?

I think its obvious, but I'm an atheist - and proud to be one.

myLot reputation of 92/100. leizlmarie (2480)   ranked 708 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

from the beginning we were given absolute freedom! meaning, we can do whatever we want to do according to our own decision.. and from the beginning, God have warned the people that we have different choices in every instances we are in and each choices have its corresponding result/consequence! people should be responsible to what is happening in this material world.. and what's happening now is the result of man's action..

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

For likaes:
I believe that freewill is one of the things that makes life beautiful. God gave us freewill. That's evident from the book of Genesis.

Now if God will control us in every second of our lives, do you think this world will have a single drop of negativity?

What has been going on in this world is a pure evidence of that freewill. People chose to do horrible things because they want to. While other people do the opposite and chose to live a positive life.

And besides, will there ever be a Ten Commandments if God will control our lives?
Because if he does, then we would all be living like angels in this world.

myLot reputation of 75/100. Arkie69 (1098)   ranked 6,791 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

Ron,

I don't believe in free will. We can only think, speak and do as we have been taught. The only way we have any control over this is to seek new information our brain can use to produce different thoughts, words and moves. The fact that you and I think slightly different only means we have been exposed to different information as we have developed. If that information came from God you will probably be ok but if it came from man you are probably in trouble. To change your life you must first change the information that is controlling your life. We do have some control over who we listen to but even then we may not be getting the real truth.

Also I do not believe God knows the future like so many believe. Jesus made the statement that only God knows when this world will end. I do not believe Jesus meant the exact day, hour and minute. This world as we know it will end when man destroys it. That could be today or 1,000 years from now. I believe that is what Jesus meant. God simply knows the world will end when man destroies it.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

The freewill can also be called as freedom. You know you have it since you have the ability to choose whatever you want for your life.

It's evidently seen in the Bible so what I've said about freewill was not directly taught to me by a human being.

myLot reputation of 90/100. flowerchilde (6809)   ranked 508 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

When God endowed thinking ability, a whole new world (or tree) of possibilities 'came to be' because with thinking ability comes the ability to choose and make choices.. (that's why I always put ' around the phrase 'free-will'! Because even 'free-will' is now imperfect, and ability to choose is closer to the truth). I realized that was why the universe and man and woman was not created until the first bound-to-occur rebel thought, not only occurred but had ripened into outright sedition and trickery.. so we would all (angel and man) take this unavoidable journey together at once, else it could take virtually 'for ever'... Since a deity/creator would have to be Perfect, or else the deity itself would fall apart/ be under this natural law of 'falling-apart-ness' - And also since the deity is the life force, or actually Life itself, is why imperfection ends up the opposite of Life.. Yet, because the deity is Perfect, the 'end' result can only be the best 'end' result possible! Any other doctrine cannot be true and is against logic. Notice how no one actually hears the notorious words "anyone not believing will go to the 2nd death" until [1] everyone has experienced having been resurrected and [2] they have experienced, witnessed and lived through an extrememely long (long) day of the examination of all things.. all human history, etc.. Now after all that, who's not going to believe.. ["Hell"/ that blasphemy, is a mistranslation that should read, simply, "the grave". Romans 5:18 says "as death came upon all humanity through one man (Adam) so also life has come upon all humanity through one 'man' (Jesus)." - God gets a seriously bad rap, aNd is highly underestimated... Just one more note, he does care a lot for all.. but what was His other choice? No rational creatures, ever?:))

For one, if not for him I would not have been able to give up a 35 yr old cig. habit that I loved without much trouble at all.I feel he looks after me.God knows all but does not control all.He can see what man will do in the future so there fore he knows how the world will end and when.He does not plan the world or your choices he can only know ahead wat choices you will make.It is man's own free will that is distroying the world, not God.

Hello likaes Ji,

If You are talking about 'Free-will', then was there any free-will taken care-off before birth, why all of us did not show our willingness to have choice of parents/place/cast/creed etc. So let's think, 'everything, happening around is God's pleasure and bound to happen . Have a nice time.

yes god created us but he didnt create our ways
and if you look at it makes a great point he allowed us to choose which way we were going to go what actions we would take if he wanted evryone to pe perfect he would have created us just like him
and i know some people wonder why he didnt and i do not have the answer to that and im not sure if there is an answer but that is how i belive and as i said i never question it anymore

+ to all you true believers... ..to think, is to be able to choose.. This life (life as we know it) is an unavoidable journey, lesson and drama). The only other option is for rationality to never be endowed.. It's also fair to say even though we can choose, there still is bound to be different sorts of consequences for different choices.. do not murder, isn't only logical and a fair way to think, it also is logical to know that if one does murder, there are natural consequences not just the ceasing of a life taken, but consequences in the murderers life and character as well.. Individuals and society and even ancient nomads all benefit from knowing there is behavior which is beneficial (blesses) and behavior which is not beneficial (curses society and individuals).

Hello my friend ronreyes Ji,
First of all, let's define God;
http://www.update.uu.se/~fbendz/nogod/no_god.htm

thumbupTo prove the non-existence of god we first need to define the word "god". When christians talk about god they mean an almighty being. This, I think, is the only god that holds, since it is the only god that can be logically justified.

I think it makes most sense if god is female, because only women can give life. Something that even people in the Stone Age understood. Later when wars affected the cultural evolution, and men took control of society, god became male, but the female god still lives on in the expression "Mother earth". It should also be pointed out that an omnipotent god must be either androgyne or sexless. However, in most religions god is male so I will refer to god as 'he', 'him' etc.

Some people (Einstein for instance) believe in a god who is not a personal god, but a Spinozan kind of god. I claim that this god is not a god! To say that god is universe - by getting knowledge of the universe we get knowledge of god - is to redefine the meaning of the word god. This has nothing to do with the word god as it was defined by the "primitive" cultures which preceded our present civilization. He can be excluded with Occam's razor, and most important: Such a god does not hear prayers.

If god is not omnipotent there is nothing that prevents him from being a product of the universe. If that is the case, what makes god divine? Then god would only be an alien, a being of matter; probably containing flesh, blood and DNA like all life we know of. Everything god is able to do would be things that human beings also will be able to do, all his knowledge would be knowledge we will also achieve. In fact humans would be gods, which should lead to some strange kind of humanism!

Many people justify their faith with god as an explanation. What is the meaning of life? Where does time and space come from? Who created the physical constants? et cetera. Because we lack knowledge of these things - and maybe never will, since they are questions like "what is the color of a second?" or "how does sound taste?" - god is there as an explanation.

Let's say that god is the meaning of life, what then is the meaning of god? If god has a nature, who created that nature? If god created time and space, how can god exist without it? Since creation is an event in time, how could god create time? and who created god? To answer these questions god must be almighty, or else you can't explain them. In fact you can if you say god stands above time and space and so on (which he indeed does if he is almighty), but to be able to prevent god from being tied to future phenomena, you must give him the quality of omnipotence so he can stand above everything.

I think, let everybody have their own way of thinking. Have a nice time. thumbup

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

I understand. It's like you're saying who created God?
For me, there's no point of asking that question. Because if ever I know and I'll tell you, you'll just keep on recycling the same question over and over again.
It's the same with science, if the big bang theory was a fact, then what's there in space before the big bang occurred? How and what they're made of?
How does a single explosion made all things unique and beautiful?

Talking about the origin of life, it seems like there will always be a never-ending explanation for this matter. Because if you stated what's the beginning of everything, there will always be a question such as "What's the beginning of that particular beginning?"

You're right about the last line. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
You just stated yours, and even though we have different views regarding this subject, I still love the things you have said.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

And by the way, when you try to look at nature itself and all the things that surrounds us, you can't deny that there's a wonderful design in everything.

"There's gotta be a designer!"

Even Einstein himself said that.

myLot reputation of 21/100. Chiang_Mai_boy (1251)   ranked 15,043 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

Dead wrong on that point. Einstein never said any thing that would indicate that he believed there was a mythical designer. He did not believe in a god as most perceive her.

I did not say he believed that there's designer. What I'm saying is that "he is assuming" - "there's gotta be!"

It's a pretty logical quote actually!

Hello all responders Ji,
Here are somethings, which God won't ask You:-

Ten things God won't ask you on that day

1. God won't ask you what kind of car you had driven, will ask,
how many people you have transported.

2. God won't ask you sqaure footage of your house

To Chiang_Mai_boy:

Dead wrong on that point. Einstein never said any thing that would indicate that he believed there was a mythical designer. He did not believe in a god as most perceive her.
>>Indeed, Einstein did not believe in a "mythical" designer, but he did say things which would indicate that he believed in a "designer":

"Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe -- a spirit vastly superior to that of man/woman, and in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble."

"God does not play dice with the universe."

What does this mean? It means purpose. At one time, he did say he believed in Spinoza's God, but I think this may have been a misnomer (Einstein was only human). He said, "I believe in Spinoza’s God, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists, but not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and doings of mankind (either the individual or collectivity)." This sounds to me like deism, rather than agnosticism, much less outright atheism. This, and the other quotes above.

Einstein did not believe in any doctrinal God(s); that much is given. But when he speaks of an "illimitable superior spirit," and a "spirit vastly superior to that of man," rather than using a simpler term such as "force;" he is clearly not speaking of something/someone unconscious. The only definition of "spirit" that does not concern life or animation is that of a "mood" in a particular time and place. "Mood" or "atmosphere" has little (if anything) to do with the context of a force driving natural selection, and certainly nothing to do with a "spirit" that would be compared to that of man.

Plainly, Einstein was talking about a consciousness, be it incorporeal or physical. This being the case, he was certainly not in your corner; he was no atheist. Whenever a myLotter asks if you believe in God, your response is a fervent "NO!" Einstein's response is somewhere in the neighborhood of "Yes, and no. I do not believe in a 'loving God,' but I do believe this universe and the life therein were no accident."

I first off would have to be having a discussion with a person
in order for them to say that. And if I was having a discussion
with that person then it would have to be a religious
discussion or a discussion on religion.
For someone to just walk up to me and say "There is no God", I
would turn and walk away thinking they are kind of crazy.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and if someone thinks
there is no God then it is not my job to persuade them otherwise.
Some of the things that have happened in my personal life
have made me wonder the same thing. The things that I read and
hear on the News as well.
Horrible things happening to innocent babies and people, here in the
United States and around the world. It really has made me wonder.
And I would like to tell you that the saying "Whatever does not Kill
you only makes you stronger". This is not true.

I understand.
But as a believer, I still believe in this God-given freewill.

If a man sins, it's because he wants to, not because God wants to.

The problem with some atheists is that they're blaming it all in religion.

Well if an atheist kills a person, obviously, that's not religion.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

And if anyone kills a baby in the name of religion, I believe that's fanaticism and that they're crazy enough to do these horrible things.

It's like saying, when a person is crazy over money, he will kidnap a child and ask for a multi-million dollar ransom. Or when a politician is crazy over the presidential position, he can manipulate the voting process (or whatever you want to call it) in order for him to win.

I guess that's when the saying comes in:
"Too much of anything is not right."

I think I would say that it was their opinion and it is up to them what they believe. I believe in a creator but am happy to listen to different points of view.
Many atheists have seen the damage caused by people who say they believe in god but do the opposite of what their own god says. For example, the bible says 'thou shalt not kill' but people go to war in the name of the god of the bible. I'm not sure but I believe the koran asks people to respect all life but certain followers kill themselves and others in the name of their god.
Many people have stopped believing in god because of the actions of people who say they believe.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ronreyes (609)   ranked 1,336 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

You're right! Sometimes, the believers themselves are the ones who are living a life contrary to what they believe in.

I'm quite confused about Muslims. Their prophet Mohammed said that they should not kill. But look at what they did in the 9/11 incident!

jbe570 (20)   ranked 36,877 out of 38,039 in life  1 year ago

Ronreyes, please study the Koran. 60% or more of this text tells Muslims to kill the infidels, or anyone who will not be persuaded to believe in Mohammed's teachings. Then there are the ayatollahs after him who added to his teaching of violence. When Mohammed wrote the Koran, his little tribe was in the minority, so killing other people was a way to protect themselves and grow their religion. Remember, these people lived in a very harsh land and from a harsh land grows harsh beliefs. It was generally a kill or be killed society.

The trouble now is that by and large Islamic society has not advanced from the 8th century. There are many kind-hearted Muslims in the world, but these are generally the ones who are not intimately familiar with the Koran. The radical Muslims, the ones who will participate in suicide bombings, etc., know their Koran backwards and forwards.

You should also read writings of Muslims who have risked everything, including being disowned by their families and having contracts put out on their lives, who have left Islam for Christianity or another faith. There is one in particular who has now become a US Citizen after being born and raised in Egypt, earning a PhD in Egypt in Islamic studies. He addresses the threat the radical Muslims present in a very cogent manner. He also says that one-on-one the middle of the road Muslim, which are the majority, can be reached and talked to in a reasonable manner. These are not the threat.

We love all kinds of people, not just Christians. But, I do fear radicals of all types. There are also radical Christians who are actually full of hate, not love. They do not do our faith any good.

That's my point! We can't blame it all in religion. Some atheists do, and that's what I don't understand about them.

Whether you're a believer or an unbeliever, it doesn't matter. You still have the freedom to do whatever the hell you want.

"Perhaps there's no reality either, but I can't get anyone to debate on that. Lets be friends?"

..I'm not Christian. I'm pagan with extremely loose beliefs on deities^_^ I actually don't see any reason why everyone's beliefs can't be true in some way or form, so there wouldn't be much arguing with me.

I'm a very strong believer in God because that's how I was raised, and my reaction would be, than how do you think you woke up this morning. And if you look around you, you will see God's work all the time, even though it seems like he's not there when you want him to be he's there just when you need him to be, God always opens another door when one closes, he always do. I respect all peoples beleifs but there is God even if you can not see him you can witness his work each and everyday. How I know this is that I had a friend who was hit by a car and ran over by a bus, I'm not sure if anyone has heard this story or not but anyway it happened in May and we all thought that he wasn't gonna make it we prayed everyday and night for his well being. He survive and he came to school the very first day fun of cheer and had a very big smile, even though he's confined to a wheelchair he's still alive. This is why I say there is God if someone can come back from something like that.

I have had that statement said to me. I told the person, that is your choice, and God will not go away, because you don't believe in Him -and when you die, What if you find out then that you were wrong?

Just a few statements from the Bible that addresses some of the statements here:
Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart: 'there is nor God.'
1 Kings 18:21 Why halt between two opinions, if God is God then serve him. If Baal (pagan god) is god than serve him.
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that "seems" right unto a man/woman, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Isaiah 55:8 For your thoughts are not my thoughts, and your ways are not my ways
Romans 1:21 even though they knew God they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their "thoughts" and their foolish hearts were darkened

It takes more than mere believing in God. In James 2:19 it says:"you believe in one God; You do well; even the demons believe and tremble

We were created by God to serve Him. He loves us. He is NOT responsible for all of the ugliness and bad things in the world. 99% of that is done by mankind, because he/she has rejected the true and living God. Saying I believe or that I am a Christian - does NOT make me one. That's why the kooks out there do stupid thing and that they are Christians - they are NOT. They give all the rest of us a bad rap.

Even Jesus said in so many words, "if you reject Me, you 'will' embrace another.

I'd better quite here. God bless each of you.

Well Classy, we all gamble with our lives and afterlives as we see fit. I reject nothing and accept that reality is probably far different than any of us could imagine.

I prefer to view the thing that runs this universe, a combination of science and spirituality..however it's true nature, in my own way -- since everyone interprets divinity differently, and seeing as how we're all different and will inevitably make different gambles, I figure if he/she/it/they...are so worth it, and believe me I'm inclined to think they are; then they will accept all us misfits along with whatever "true" religion might possibly exist, if any...for trying.
Because if not, if trying wasn't good enough, then I think I might be wrong on the worth it thing...if us imperfect beings are rejected on the basis of our flawed logic.

However, I respect everyone's views. Nearly everyone believes they're right, why else would they believe what they do? Everyone has perfectly understandable reasons, as well. Bad apples and good apples alike. I may not agree, but I respect all of you. My reasons are mine alone and not highly influenced by the bad examples of any given religion.

You've made your case, I feel it's unecessary to make mine...since I'm not in the converting business (and my arguing would undoubtable attract others and lead to a "my religion is best-a-thon" -- or non-religion is best, both, whatever) and my way of living is definitely not for everyone, so I wouldn't be so arrogant to believe I had anything to convert anyone TO in any case.

Blessings to you also, and may you do well in our your endeavors, Classy.

Thanks Ron.

Tolerance and acceptance makes the world a better place, and if any of us want it to be more prevalent...leading by example seems a good place to start, even in minor infractions and light discussions.

'Sides, I'm used to having to make a firm stand. What's the use of having beliefs you hold so dearly, even if they're rather relaxed like mine, if they don't matter enough that you can take a few challenges every now and again?=)
