If an ATHEIST tells you "There is no God!" | | What will be your reaction? And what will you say to him/ her?
This discussion is for everybody to respond to, both atheists and believers.
Obviously, atheists will agree to this statement, so I hope you'll respond with your best atheistic manner. Like a "no-care" type of response.
Same goes with the believers. If you want to justify this with a Bible verse or a Koran verse, that's fine.
Ok, I'll go first.
I'm a believer, and either of these three statements will be my response:
1.) "Right, and there's no air to breathe as well!" 2.) "...and there's no explosion that has the ability to make all things unique!" 3.) "No God? So we all came from nothing? An Accident happened in the midst of darkness? Where does colors came from then?"

| |
| | | | | | | | | 91. jpap2003 (94) | 1 year ago | I would say: "Ok, that's what you say, what you believe, and I respect that. But are you really sure there is not God? How can you prove it? How did we all come here? When and how did all these things (life, sun, planet) start?"
And then I would wait for him to answer me, or change the subject:P

Hopefully he would get the hint. If he persisted, I'd tell him to keep his views to himself as I don't wish to discuss the subject. All religion is illogical and there is no way to convince someone that their flavor is right or wrong.
People have a right to believe or not believe in a deity, G-d, Allah, Krishna, Jesus, Bast, or the Great Pumpkin, but I don't wish to discuss it with them.
No one is going to change my views. BTW, Yes, I believe there is a G-d.

|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | Why don't you say the name God, instead of G-d!?!
| |
|
|
TheCatLady (1646) | 1 year ago | Old habit from before Internet days. I'm religious.
According to my religion you are supposed to treat the name of G-d with reference. This includes the written name.
Of course this forum is in English and it really only applies to Hebrew, and on the Internet nothing is really there unless it's printed out. ...complicated physics of how the Internet actually works. Yes scholars have actually studied the nature of the written word on the Internet from a religious perspective.
The possibility of someone printing something I wrote on the Net goes back to me having no control of what someone might do after they print it out; line their birdcage? use it for toilet paper? Ok It's in English, but it's still disrespectful.
On forums in Hebrew people replace the H with a K to prevent desecration of the name of God.

ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | I think I'm beginning to learn something new here. Pls. educate me further more. What is the connection of the internet towards typing the name G-d or God?

TheCatLady (1646) | 1 year ago | The easiest way to explain my views is to give you a link. This web site is a from a very liberal stream of Judaism. Their explanation is about as simple as it can get. You might not understand many of the terms and references, but I'm sure you can get the general idea.

The rest is a quote from C.S. Lewis who wrote the Chronicals of Narnia.
"A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said, would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be insane or else he would be an evil liar. You must make your choice. Either Jesus was, and is, the Son of God or else he was insane, or an evil liar but," C.S. Lewis goes on, "Let us not come up with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | I love this quote. And I admire C.S. Lewis. I saw an interview from the television once regarding the recent Chronicles of Narnia movie. The director said that the movie was written and was dedicated to Jesus Christ.

1. If there is no God, where do this thing around you came from? 2. If there is no God, you are not here as well.. 3. If there is no God, Who you think will be the planner of all thning around you, including humans?
That's my opinion, hope that makes sense.
God bless you. Keep believing!

| | 96. positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | If an atheist tells me "there is no God"? Well? Doesn't an atheist have the right to speak about his/her non belief? If any believer doesn't wish to hear, he/she may dust their feet as their Lord say and rush off. If any atheist tells me that, I will just keep quiet. It is his/her way of thinking and everybody is entitled to believe the way he/she likes.
Personally, I am an agnostic. Your three responses are interesting. If I were an atheist, I would surely have felt like responding.
1. Of course, I can feel air. But I can't feel God. I breathe in and breathe out and it is obvious to me what I breathe in and breathe out. It is air, not God.
2. Explosion? What are you talking about?
3. Accident in the midst of darkness? Where else do you expect accidents to happen? Colors? They were always there. They don't exist for a bee though and yes even color blind people have difficulties perceiving them. What has that got to do with God?
Cheers and happy mylotting
| |
| |
|
|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | 1.) I didn't say that the air is God. Yes you can feel air but can you see it? Believers feel God through faith. It's like saying you feel the air through breathing. Or you feel gravity when you jump. By the way, gravity is imaginary - it's just a scientific term in order to justify the falling of objects.
2.) The Big Bang!?!
3.) Colors were always there? How do you know? Whereas scientists say that before the Big Bang occurred, there was nothing. Even though scientists wouldn't say that, you can assume that it is true. If an accident did occurred in the midst of darkness, then how can an accident or an explosion produce colors?
| |
|
|
positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | Believers might be able to "feel God through their faith." But non believers do not rely on faith. They question and demand proof. I did the same with my previous religion, Christianity. I asked questions, I wanted to know the truth, I read a lot, and as a result of it, I discarded the Islamic, Christian, and Judaic versions of God. When someone tells me that he/she "feels God through faith," I just shrug and say, "Yep, but that's you, not me!!" I don't feel any God, but I do feel air. So air is more real to me than God. So is gravity, even though it is just a scientific "term" to explain the falling back of things to earth. If I jump I know I will fall back to earth. So that's more true to me than God.
As for the Big Bang, I don't know what that has got to do with God. It is just scientists trying to explain the beginning of the world.
Colors were always there for me. I know this because I have been seeing colors ever since I learned to see and comprehend colors. Whether they existed from the beginning of existence is not my concern. However, since I see them, they are true for me. A scientist is better qualified than me to answer your last question.
And I still don't see what all this has got to do with God. As an agnostic, I am open to all ideas and views. They are interesting, but still they are ideas and views, and I prefer real life experiences. And so far, I have not experienced God as explained by the world's popular monotheistic religions.:)

| | 97. thelastwolf113 (3086) | 1 year ago | I hear what the believers are saying, but just because there is beauty and uniqueness in the world does NOT prove a supernatural being created it. Nothing anyone has said is proof that such a being exists.
I couldn't comment on your 'atheist creed' because I'm not on your friends list, but atheists don't believe what it says, it's a misrepresentation of atheism. I've seen the same thing about Christianity, making it sound absurd. The only TRUE thing about atheism is: we don't believe in the existence of a god or supernatural beings, that's it. For me, I don't care how we came into existence, it's what I do with my existence that matters.

ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | It's true! But as a human being, a living organism, you have the ability to design and create things. Even a child can design things if you lend him a set of crayons and a coloring book. It's like saying, if there's a design, then there's gotta be a designer. As to an invention, there's an inventor.
Obviously, non-living things doesn't have that kind of ability! Only living beings can.
Now I'm not saying that the beauty and uniqueness of everything automatically proves the existence of God. But it creates a thought.
Like I said, if there's a design, there's a designer. Or a creation, there's a creator.
Now when you say the word designer, creator, inventor, babysitter, driver, carpenter, etc. It only means that you're referring to a living organism such as human beings! It's gotta be someone! Not something!
An accident that was caused or is composed by non-living things cannot create something that has an obvious and incredible design, order, and beauty. Not unless if SOMEONE created that something to do such things.
Because in real life, that's how it works right!?! For example: A robot (a non-living thing) cannot dance, move, or perhaps sing unless someone programs it to do these tasks. A computer will not work unless someone makes it work.
Now who is that SOMEONE? I don't really know! Is it God? I'm not really sure.
But once again, it's a thought: There's gotta be someone; not something!
And regarding the Atheist Creed photo, I got that one from a website of a famous atheist named Richard Dawkins. http://www.richarddawkins.net
Don't worry, I know exactly what atheism means! And I'm not making it sound absurd! I totally respect atheists. And I'm always open when it comes to their opinions.

thelastwolf113 (3086) | 1 year ago | I have to agree your reasoning does provoke thought. Probably the most rational discussion I've ever had with a theist, thank you. You spoke in a way that I can understand, and I promise you I will give it some thought, I still don't think it'll change my belief in a god. But I like your reasoning. As far as Dawkins, he's entitled to write whatever he wants, it just doesn't fit all atheists. It may fit him but not me. Just as, I'd imagine, you wouldn't want to classified as a group with other believers you may not share a belief with. Either way, it's not an issue and I didn't mean to imply that it was.

| | | 100. XiaXueYi (51) | 1 year ago | I haven't time to read through all the discussions, but I'll share a few pennies from my thoughts:
1)The feel from reading through the first few pages led me to think that more people are actually taking the chance to proclaim their faith, than to encourage true open-ended discussions. While it is good and all to "bear the cross", please do keep in mind that this is after all, a secular website. A.k.a. not dedicated to supporting of any kind of religion, or atheism; but rather, peaceful co-existence of all religions and/or philosophy and/or beliefs. So my advice, is to tune down on the overt or even blatant faith-profession.
2)Religious topics will ALWAYS be sensitive discussions. The first point is a subset of this point. I've seen most of the posts and they shed light and endow people with new information. Organised and well-thought ideas and arguments also. However, cut down on the "anti-atheism" insinuations. I need not say more, all the posts are there to see.
Though I might be reading too much into it, but always tread lightly in the area known as 'religion'.
And to be on topic, here's my take on the first post's three points:
1)There is no link between God and air. If you want to use the "creation argument", please specify it, otherwise it leads to confusion.
2)The Big Bang? There are theories in science that proves God exist, and others that prove otherwise. And again, I ask, what are you trying to prove?
3)While there is no solid way to truly justify that there was one sole creator, neither is there a solid way to argue against the "Big Bang" theory. Again, please use a better argument.
I may refer back to this topic some time later, keep the discussion flowing and healthy!
