Terrific! Walmart had a sale a few months back on peaches and I got about 25 pounds of them. I brought them home, sliced them up and made a light syrup and canned them. We opened the first jar last night and they turned out great! They are not mushy and they will give the store bought canned peaches a good run for their money! I am so happy about this! This was my first try at canning peaches and the fact that they turned out so well is making me so very happy. My fiance and the kids enjoyed them. Next year I will have to can more of them. I ended up with 12quarts in all. I did use some fresh for snacks and for baking with. I am trying to be more self sufficient and get away from being so dependent on commercialized food products so this is a great step in the right direction! Has anyone else tried canning anything?

I am in the middle of canning apples. It is quite a task. My Grandmas tree went crazy this year and she let me take all I want, so I took 3 laundry baskets full. Some have bad spot but we can just cut them out. So far I have made applesauce and candied apples. Today I will probibly can apple pie filling. I have only canned like 12 jars so far but I am no where near done. I will be working hard through the weekend. But when all is said and done I know what is in my food and it was very affordable for me to preserve.

Happythoughts, you are truly Blessed! Free apples is great! I know you have a long weekend ahead of you. I did not think I was ever going to get done. Sounds as if you have plenty of thoughts of what you want to can. I hope that we will find some good deals on apples at the local farmers market this year. I would like to make some apple sauce and apple pie filling. Might even try candied apples. My mom made some of those once and they were very good. If you look at the prices for the canned pie fillings in the grocery store it is rather expensive. This is a great alternative and I think even healthier. You know what was put into it all. Good luck at getting those apples done!

How many quarts or pints of each did you end up with? I want some apples so badly right now!

I love home canned fruit. When I was a kid, my Mom used to do a lot of canning and freezing veg, making jam etc. Before we moved to FL, we used to do a lot of canning too. But after we moved to FL, it's hard to find good fruit and veg to can. That's the one thing I miss from living in NY. We used to be able to get good peaches and apples by the bushels and can them. I miss that. They always tasted much better than the bought ones.

They do taste much better than the store bought ones! I am surprised that you cannot get good fruit in your area. Being so close to Georgia I thought you would surely get good peaches at least! I am sorry that you cannot.

I probably could at the farmers market or at a road side stand but the grocery store I go to the peaches are so hard and not that good.

I have never tried to can anything. I do not like canned peaches at all. We have a peach tree and normally I use them up rather quickly once they are ripe. Any peaches that I do not use up right away get sliced and put into freezer bags and put into the deep freeze for making pies and cobblers later in the year.

I started out canning strawberry jam and then tomatoes, then corn and green beans now peaches. I have also done some relishes as well. It is very neat! I remember my mama freezing peaches, she never liked to can them either. Frozen are great as well!

Wow, that's alot of peaches. I am not a huge fan of peaches. But once in awhile a cobbler is nice. Glad it was a success. I have never tried to can anything. Sounds like it may be the healthier way to go. Nice to know your family enjoyed them. It will make a nice treat throughout the rest of the year.

Thank you very much ersmommy1. I think it is healthier. At least I know exactly what is going into them. I did enjoy the fresh peaches as well!

I have never canned anything in my life I would not even know where to begin. Glad to hear it worked out for you. I like peaches and it would be good to have them year round. Great job having them turn out on your first try it would have probaly been a disaster for me. Happy mylotting.

Thank you luvstochat! I was so happy the way they turned out. I was afraid they would be mushy but they were firm. I think if you want to start canning the best thing to do is buy "The Ball Canning Book" it is normally sold at Walmart for like 6 or 7 bucks and that is what I use for all of my canning experiments!

wow!! congratulations for the job well done. I always want to know how to do canning. We have lots of jars but I did not try doing it. Never ever experience doing canning. That is very encouraging that it was your first time but it turned out really good!!. Did you have recipe followed while doing it? Or maybe you have a book guide? At this time we have lots of pear fruit in our yard. I plan to try canning but I don't have any idea. Sometimes when I search on the net how to do it, I found out that I need more equipment to use when I do canning. It needs money to buy one, so I just forget about it.

Fortunately my mom canned foods when I was younger. I did buy the Ball Canning Book which was $6.95 at Walmart. I did see a water bath canner at a local Hardware store for $22.95. I have been using my moms water bath canner. Now I also wanted a pressure canner so I checked out prices and they were way too expensive for me. I looked around at yard sales and thrift shops until I found 2! I got both of them for $10 a piece. I took them to the local Ag Extension office and they checked them for me to make sure they would work right. I understand the no money situation that is why I went the cheap-o route myself! I would try to look for canning books at your local library and check out craigs list for canners. Good luck!

I found this discussion after making a discussion about the peaches we had after dinner tonight. They were the summer peaches we had frozen. Next summer we will can some and freeze some. I love to can. I know the food is healthier and better for us. I can alot of our sumer garden produce.
