What's the scariest or most painful surgery you've ever had?

I've had about four surgeries (both major and minor) in my lifetime. For me, the scariest and most painful surgery was when I was kid and had oral surgery in my mouth. It was so painful and the idiot dentist didn't give me adequate anesthesia to numb the pain. I'm not sure why. Cause I kept screaming and saying how much it hurt. The second scariest surgery was the C-section. I wasn't scared at the time. In fact, I felt at peace and calm. As if, I was fine with any outcome as long as my baby came out alive. It was a last minute and completely unexpected emergency surgery. I had zero time to prepare myself. They simply came into my hospital room and announced that's what they were going to do. They didn't really give me a choice and I didn't want a choice. If that's what needed to be done, then so be it. Looking back on it, I can see how life threatening that kind of surgery can be. They try to warn you of the possible risks of the spinal tap and surgery, like paralysis, death, etc. But, in that state, I wasn't listening. All I was thinking about was my baby. Have you ever been through a really scary situation in surgery?

I've only ever had one surgery, and it was rather minor. Yes I had to go under, and that was the weirdest part. I hardly remember going into the OR, I was already so groggy. I vaguely remember climbing onto the operating table, next thing you know I'm in recovery thinking I'm gonna be sick. That was to have my gall bladder removed. I wasn't really worried about it, although it was my first surgery so I wasn't sure what to expect. The thought of surgery terrifies my husband. He had his first when he was 13, and he doesn't like the thought of going under. A few years ago he needed his appendix out and they had to give him meds to calm him down because he was freaking out from the thought of surgery.

I think that's a natural response in some people, especially anyone who's had a bad experience with surgery in the past.

I think that the most painful surgery that I ever had was when I was sterilised, that was the most painfullest thing I have ever had. I was put to sleep and when I woke up I just screamed in agony, I had to have morphine as the pain was so bad. The scariest surgery was when I had my hysterectomy, because of how painful the sterilisation had been I was petrified that this was going to be as painful, it actually was not. But the scary thing was that my blood pressure took a massive nose dive during and after the operation and as a result I was unconscious for 48 hours, they would not let my family come or anything because i was so out of it and I was on half hourly obs. I came around after two days but was still very woozy and my blood pressure remained low for some time after.

The scariest surgery I ever had was when I was 16. It was winter and I slipped on the ice and while sliding on the ice trying to keep my balance I fell through the glass door. (once on the way forward, and once on the way slipping back out.) I was petrified because I almost amputated my hand, and the artery was shooting blood all over the place. I was never sick or anything as a kid, so that was a most scary experience. I had never been 'put under' either, and back then they didn't have the surgical re-attachment technique that they do today. Scary for me, and scarier for my parents as I lost so much blood before even getting to the hospital. My most painful one, and equally scary, was when they had to operate a few years ago to remove cancer. There was 2 different cancers in the same organ, and it wasn't known until during surgery pathology whether they had spread or not. It was very painful, and also very stressful on the mind and soul.

hi beauty queen the scariest most painful surgery for me happened three years ago.I started out to go to my favorite restaurant for breakfast. I took the bus to larwin sqaure, sat down on a bench beside the cafe to catch my breath. Then it happened, for some reason I moved up onto this sloping area of cement, tripped, fell hard on my left shoulder. When I went to try to get up my left arm and hand would not work,I really thought I had just dislocated my shoulder.. well I had the paramedics, the ambulance, the whole thing, then they took me to x ray, talk about pain, the x ray tech was really rude and kept making me move my arm that would not move. The pain was so intense I was in tears then when I was taken back to my room, the orthopedic surgeon was there, He had a fit when he found out that the med nurse had not given me the p ain med shot he had ordered to be given before the x ray. She gave it to me under his watching eyes. he told me that my shoulder bones were so badlyh smashed that he had to do surgery and put in a shoulder joint replacement. the surgery itself was not all that painful, and the healing was not all that bad, it was that first day on the x ray table because the idiot x ray tech was moving myshoulder with all the smashed bones. the surgeon explained that the broken ends of the bones rubbing togetherwas what caused such terrible pain.

Well this is going to sound silly, but my foot surgery. I had a hammer toe and I could not sleep or walk because the pain that was triggerd by the nerves were so intense. So I had the surgery. And that part was not bad, they did it in the office and I had novociane. But after it wore of the pain was unbelievable. Of course I was the stupid one and did not take the meds soon enough after I got home because I felt good. Then BAM it wore of an I felt as if I was suddenly had been hit by a ton of bricks. I took the meds but it took a second dose a few hours later and constant ice packs that I finally got some relief. But I took some strong meds that made me almost hallucinate. I got off them as soon as possible, but the pain was the worst. I had bunion surgery many years before on both feet ( at different times of course) and did not have as much pain. And it has been 18 months and I still get some pain if I am on my feet for long periods of time or if it is damp out. Of course now an asprin works. I know it will go away at some point, but I guess my age ( which does nto stop me from doing anything usually) plays a role.

That doesn't sound silly at all! And, I know the feeling. When I got home from the hospital, after the C-section, I refused to take the meds they gave me cause they made me agitated. And I didn't want to be taking meds while nursing my baby, so I just threw them away. I was in so much pain for so long. Turned out that they had put staples in the bottom of my stomach on the incision. And, those staples would dig into me every time I turned over. Felt like someone was pouring scalding hot water on my stomach!

I am fortunate that I have only ever had one major surgery of my life. I had something done to my legs to lengthen some tendons, so that I would be able to walk better. It didn't really help, I still walk weird, but i can get from A to B on my feet, and that's really all that matters.

I've had two surgeries till this date. One was on my nose.. Some vessel got damaged in there.. I got to see the operation theater from inside for the first time in my life. It was damn scary. I could here my heart beats. I could see my life line going up and down on that computer screen.. Though it was just a small thing, nothing was serious.. but you know the formalities these docs do in operation theater .. that made me crazy. That is why my doctor had to call another doctor just to talk to me so that I could let him do his job well and don't ask him any questions. But the most painful surgery I got was from my dentist. Yes THE ROOT CANAL!!! Oh I don't even wanna remember how painful it was. How she used to dig my tooth with those 2 inch hard metal pins.. And there was no other way to give me anesthesia but injecting in into my gums with an injection.. I was scared even to get the anesthesia from her. And its all worth it.. The problem WAS serious and it needed to be cured!! Phewwww.. thank goodness its all over now. Now am very serious about brushing my teeth!!

Years ago I had to have an ovarian tumor removed. I got through the surgery all right but I wasn't healing right. When I went back into the dr. to have him look at it, he had me up on the table examining me and suddenly he pulled a scapel out of his pocket and sliced the icision open...no numbing, no pain killer, no warning. I went nuts screaming in pain while he used long Q-tip looking things to "clean it out"...it felt more like he was digging for gold!! All of a sudden he walked out...he said he wouldn't do anymore until I was quiet and still. My Mom was there and was trying to calm me down. The dr. said if I didn't like it I could go to the hospital...ACROSS THE STREET...like I could walk over there with my guts hanging out. I finally shut myself down. I just went somewhere deep inside me and everything was still. I could still hear and see things going on but it was like I was high above looking down. I didn't feel anything. I had to go back 4-5 more times for "cleanings" and everytime I went into that office I had to go to that deep spot to get through it. I finally healed after 6 months...that's when they found out I was just starting to get diabetes...and I've never went back to the dr.'s for anything more than winter sicknesses. The dr. ended up leaving the country after numerous ppl started sueing him. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

Major Spinal Fusion Operation. I was 13 when I had this. They fused two metal rods on either side of my spine to correct scoliosis. Before, I had a 49 degree curve, and now I'm almost straight. It was extremely painful though. The surgery was 6 hours long, and I was in the hospital for a week. I had the surgery on a Monday and walked on Thursday, Wednesday being my hardest day. They had me on just about as much morphine possible, but I still cried in pain every time I woke up. Moving around was extremely painful. They had to turn me every 2 hours, and I pretty much screamed the first time they did it on Monday night. I dealt with bracing and all since I was 10, so it's been quite a journey. But I'm doing well now, with occasional pain.
