Which antivirus do you use? |
My computer crashed three days ago. It was just fixed this afternoon. The technician told me that my computer should have internet protection to avoid crashes in the future. There are many internet protection software available. I'm having problems deciding what to get. I don't really like strict protection software, it almost blocks everything I open in the net. What antivirus do you recommend?

Its performance was quite good. At present I have been using Panda Global Protection 2009. It is also working fine.

mhagskier (215) | 1 year ago | hi there kababayan..
in our pc we use 5 different anti virus, why? we all know that every anti virus have limitations in removing or deleting some viruses, some can delete a kind of virus some are can not, but i always recommend the norton and nod32 anti virus
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | You should only have one antivirus with real-time monitoring. When one antivirus detects an infection, and proceeds to remove it, another one could falsely flag this as malicious activity, and block the first antivirus from removing the infection. It's one thing to have 1 active antivirus and 4 on-demand scanners, but you won't help anyone by recommending "5 antivirus."
If you're having a lot of trouble with malware, I suggest you take a look at the resources made available to you here: http://invincible-windows.blogspot.com/ Hope this helps!

santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | I do not recommend ZoneAlarm at all. Its protection is more perceived than reality. It works for some people, usually those who don't go very far beyond a handful of the same Web sites. But it fails the true acid test every time, except in the hands of a guru who fully understands networking protocols and has the patience to Google every single item he/she does not recognize offhand.
ZoneAlarm is popular because people recognize the name. It became famous as a pioneer of SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall technology, which beat out proxy firewalling in 1997 to become the de facto standard. Now that SPI is the standard, the only measurable source of comparison for firewall products today is the leaktests. This is also misleading, since it is a measurement of reactive detection, and not proactive prevention.
ZoneAlarm is to this day a user-dependent product. It's protection mileage is determined entirely by circumstances, such as your skill level, your online activities, and whether or not the built-in scanners (paid versions only) detect malware by signature or heuristics. It is not a product for novice users, or even intermediates. If the latest versions have the ability to whitelist certain directories, this could help, as it would cause the firewall to stop crying "Wolf!" all the time. But if such a feature does exist, it can only help the average user if it is automated.
Anyone who prefers to place the responsibility of primary defense on their firewall would have (at one time) been best off with IBM/ISS BlackICE. Every Windows hacker I have ever met or spoken to uses BlackICE. And who would know better about hacking (and how to defend against it) than the hackers themselves?! The standalone BlackICE was pulled from the market sometime around September of last year. Fortunately, we now have Proventia Desktop, which is a full suite.

| maddragon (11) | 1 year ago | I agree, AVG is number one! I make my living solely on the internet. I own a website, and read email, do surveys, and get paid to surf. I visit in upwards of 100,000 websites per day, so you can imagine what would happen if AVG didn't work. I am currently running the free version, but want to upgrade when I get my server going. They only charge a 1 time fee for the upgraded version, unlike Norton (a RAM eater), McAffee (also uses too much RAM and system resources), and many of the other big anti-virus programs. Zone Alarm is free, but it is not a true anti virus, and it eats RAM like candy. eAcceleration works but it is not free, and you have to wait for tech support for a patch if you get a bug. How do I know all this? I have tried them all! Hope this helps!

santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | To lubi570: Where do you download open source and freeware from? I'd be willing to bet you're downloading from the wrong people. I suggest you install McAfee SiteAdvisor on your computer, and avoid downloading anything from any Web site that has a red or yellow rating. This would help keep a lot of those adware and Trojans off your computer.

| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | Yah, I know. I think it's because of the myLot toolbar. All toolbars are detected as adware, because they display ads while giving you ready access to the forum. As long as the myLot toolbar displays ads, I imagine it will stay yellow in SiteAdvisor.

spoiledbrat802 (3595) | 1 year ago | You don't have to be a genius to operate it. It's been sitting on my system tray for almost a year. I don't even open it and scan my system with it - it's just quietly running in my system background and I've never been infected by a malware. That's how good it is.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | I haven't had an infection since October of 2006. And the only reason I got infected then was because I was trying out the AOL Safety & Security Center. Since then, the only thing I've ever gotten hit with was DDoS attacks in February of 2007, when two top-level DNS servers were compromised in an aggressive sales pitch for a very large botnet. And that's not really an infection on the client side; all you have to do is reset your network connection.
The best antivirus depends on the needs of the user. A lot of IT professionals still recommend Norton, because it embeds itself deep in the system kernel and is difficult for malware to pull down. Others recommend Kaspersky, because they distribute important signature updates faster than anyone else. And still others (including Best Buy's Geek Squad) are now recommending McAfee, because they have added to their entire consumer product line a technology that was previously reserved for their enterprise products. It's called ScriptScan, and it is to my knowledge the pioneer of the new "anti-drive-by-download" concept.
Still others do indeed recommend NOD32. It was light on system resources the last time I checked, and quite effective with default configurations. It is currently the runner-up to Avira AntiVir in heuristic detection of new malware, and formerly #1 in that arena, on AV-Comparatives.

5. AndrewFreyne (2573) | 1 year ago | I would definitely recommend that you use AVG 8.0. This is the latest version and it's also free! I use AVG myself and I have had no problems with it. I scan my system once a week on a Saturday an I'm very pleased with the results I have been getting. Why pay for an antivirus product when there are a lot of good free products on the market? Here's the website if you want to check out this product. As well as having this I also recommend that you have some kind of Adware and spyware removal. I use the following product which is also free and it is another good product. It's called Ad-aware 2008, the website for this is: www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php http://free.avg.com Good luck. Andrew

AndrewFreyne (2573) | 1 year ago | It sounds like you were given a quote regarding the paid version. Here's the link: http://free.avg.com If you click on this you will be taken to the site and you should be able to download the free verson of AVG. Good luck. Andrew
| |
argie713 (709) | 1 year ago | The paid version must be better. Can two antivirus work on the same PC?
| |
AndrewFreyne (2573) | 1 year ago | You might find that, if you have two antivirus products on your computer, they may start conflicting with eachother. The free version is absolutely great and I recommend you use that! Why would you want to pay for the paid version? Did you click on the link? Good luck. Andrew
| |
argie713 (709) | 1 year ago | I've tried AVG once. I think it lacks some features of the paid one but I'll give it a try.

I've been using avg for 2 years and it seems to be working great.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | The paid version of AVG has the full version of LinkScanner, which can prevent you from visiting sites that will infect your computer in a drive-by download. The free version only has LinkScanner Lite, which blocks nothing. All it does is flag search results in Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Live. That would be one reason to buy the full version. But simply add Haute Secure to the equation, and that reason disappears.;)
| |
rafcore182 (536) | 1 year ago | No, you can't put two anti-virus in your pc, if in case you can put two anti-virusm it will just slow down you pc. Better use only one.

| maddragon (11) | 1 year ago | Hey, thanks for the HauteSecure tip! I surf for a living and own a website, and wouldn't you know somebody sent me a virus right to my server! AVG cought it, but it was a pain and a real eye-opener. Once again, Thanks!

6. maroseqf (1426) | 1 year ago | We use the AVG anti-virus software. It was installed in our computer by the computer shop when we had it reformatted.
Aside from being free, it has a lot of other components such as anti-spyware, email scanner, link scanner and resident shield. I think it is enough to protect our computer from crashing.
| |
| |
argie713 (709) | 1 year ago | Is it really that good? They must have left out some great features for the paid version.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | The free version only has LinkScanner Lite. The paid versions have the full version of LinkScanner, which prevents you from visiting infected Web sites. The free Haute Secure fills this void, but you could use this with any antivirus/antispyware. AVG's heuristic detection rate is nothing to scream about. It used to be rock-bottom at AV-Comparatives; now it's just average.

| pakman (4) | 1 year ago | Hey there...
The most highly regarded anti virus software around is Norton, however i prefer mcafee as it is not so strict and is really easy to use. I also recommend you get a separate anti-spyware as it is much more effecient.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | I too prefer McAfee, but not only because it is less intrusive than Norton. McAfee has ScriptScan.

stardustcdsd (563) | 1 year ago | honestly,i tried almost every antivirus software available because i use it from browsing centers..avg..well its good but everytime i tried to install a new one,it takes forever to install and i couldnt even do other activities with the comp for one hour and most of the time, its out of date but a good one among the free softwares antivir personal:i tried it twice and it really made me mad..sure it works good but it asks me everytime to allow/block something and if i dont use that manual stuff,it almost allow everything...bit defender...somewat good...i cannot exactly say anything about it because whenever i use it,it works well but when i come next day, someone else uninstalled it but as far as i have seen, its good..its sometimes use one of those trial versions of maccafee or kaprisky(not sure about the name).they work reaaly well during those trial period..i havent yet found a good anti virus software that is free and satisfying..may be someone can tell me about a good one..

santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | Are you kidding? Avast! takes up 70 MB of RAM!!! It's the heaviest there is, next to G DATA. McAfee only takes up 50, and that's with a full suite including firewall, antivirus, antispyware, and more. While McAfee's heuristics aren't tops, they're better than Avast!'s; and McAfee has ScriptScan to block 100% of drive-by downloads, while Avast! depends on HIPS (ultimately, the user).

argie713 (709) | 1 year ago | Norton and McAfee are old timers. They really give you the protection you need but slows down your connection much.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | Trend Micro? NO WAY!!! The only things I ever go to Trend for are their free HouseCall online scanner and HijackThis (originally developed by Merijn). They don't even compete in AV-Comparatives. When their software was tested once, it detected 85 or 87% of samples, placing it close to One-Care, which was rock-bottom at that time. And Microsoft had an excuse...they were new in the arena. Trend Micro was not.
| |
santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | BTW, the only thing AVG beats Norton or McAfee in is the price factor (referring to the free version). In proactive detection (heuristics) and removal upon detection, both Norton and McAfee beat AVG. Out of these three, my vote goes to McAfee because of ScriptScan.

santuccie (1940) | 1 year ago | I am of the understanding that Avast! may have reduced its resource consumption, but there's another concern. Avast! has a high rate of false positives (flagging legitimate files as malware). Kaspersky is good because they release important signature updates faster than anyone else, but its ability to completely disarm and remove an infection is not good compared to veterans McAfee and Norton.

rafcore182 (536) | 1 year ago | Norton makes your computer slower, its so heavy when it comes to processing. So, far the best for me is avira free version, Kaspersky is not that good in protecting your pc. It's only my opinion. I've never experience crashing files when I use the avira anti-virus.
