having a garage sale? Getting ready for a sale seems to be an awful lot of work. And at times it can be frustrating. Why would you have one? To clear out stuff you haven't used in forever? Or is making some extra money your biggest motivator? We have been donating things to the childrens home, or battered Woman shelter. Haven't had a garage sale since we have lived here. Might be a good idea. Do you think it is worth the time?

Some people like garage sales for different reasons. Some people are clearing out their house and the money is secondary. Some are needing money for some other project and clearing out the house is of less importance. For myself, I clear out the house by donating old stuff. Other people use freecycle mailing lists where you let people know you are getting rid of something so they can come pick it up instead of you throwing it in a landfill. On occasion, I've just put things out at the curb and this old guy comes by and takes it. I don't even know him, he must live in the neighborhood.
Once, he even took an old playpen that's no longer up to code. Sad part is that he left one of the wheels in the street when he took it so I don't know what he could possibly do with it.

We have gave ours to the Goodwill but I have tried selling it at yard sales and it just seems a waste of time setting it up and then setting out in the heat all day just for a few pennies. I don't price my stuff high. But I found that if I take the good stuff sometimes I can sell it on eBay and make more then if I sold it at the yard sale.

Usually it is to get rid of stuff...the money is just a bonus. I have to be careful though b/c I get carried away with it and things I didn't want to get rid of goes.

The only reason I have garage sales is to get my daughter to get rid of her stuff. I tell her if she goes threw her toys and sells them at the garage sale, she can have the money made from those toys.
I haven't had a garage sale in over a year now. Now I just donate things instead. My daughter is a bit older so she is ok with giving stuff away to kids who don't have as much as she does.
Garage sales are good if you are moving and want to get rid of bigger items. Other than that, they are alot of time and energy for usually very little profit.

The first and last garage sale I ever had was about 3 summers ago. I'm not sure why I decided to have the garage sale, but I got addicted when I saw my earnings after the first day. Then I ran around the house trying to find more stuff to sell. It got a bit ridiculous.
I won't really do garage sales anymore, because I don't really own anything worth selling. Most of the stuff I have was either purchased used, or it becomes destroyed by the kids, or both. By the time I'm done with things, they really aren't worth using again, so I'll throw it out, or possibly freecycle it or donate it.

I used to have a garage sale every year - to rid us of the old junk so we could buy new junk.

Each spring, I would have a garage sale and usually got between $200 and $400 for our junk. But it seems to mulitply. And we always seem to buy more junk.
I haven't had a garage sale now, though, for about 2 years. The last time I was going to have one, the weather didn't cooperate. So we donated a bunch of stuff that we would have normally sold.
