Bet you all feel ictchy already???
Just to make you laugh to begin with my sister in law when she was little used to call them head lights... you can just see them flashing now can't you?
My head felt really itchy today, I gave my head and hair a good wash and scrub but it still felt itchy, I had a quick hunt for the nit comb and couldn't find it, (sod's law) The children haven't been itching and I can't remeber the last time we had nits in our house.
Went out to do the school run and cos my head itched (I didn't itch it at all) I just flet that everyone was looking at my hair and the head lice which isn't there was flashing loudy at them!!
Since being home and putting the children to bed I have been on a real good hunt for a nit comb to comb my hair. For the life of me could I find one! Do you know where they were? In the cupboard with the nit stuff. Because no one has had nits for ages and ages I tidied them all up (as there were some up and down) and they were in there proper place.
I have combed my hair very carefully and I have NO NITS!! Head still feels a bit itchy, but don't know why, but at least its not nits.
Bet you have been itchy while reading this, always the way when someone starts talknig about nits you always start to itch!!
Sorry guys

YIKES, my head is itching now! I had head lice once as a child and now that I work with children, I could be exposed at any time. About a year or so ago, a child that was in our classroom only in the mornings had it, so the teachers in our classroom got checked. Another teacher and I and they had to send us home and we could not return for 24 hours. Of course, they paid me(and the other teacher) for having to stay home. The teachers who stayed had to bag EVERYTHING in the classroom up, and even though we kept our classroom clean, we wiped EVERYTHING down with bleach. When I got home, I spent $13 on laundry, which I did not get reimbursed for. Luckily I did not have carpet in my apartment (I had hardwood floors) and I cleaned the heck out of my apartment. When I returned to work, another teacher got sent home because she had lice. The bad thing about that is she was pregnant so she could not use any head lice shampoo, so she used natural remedies. Needless to say, head lice doesn't gross me out...it is just a PAIN to deal with.
****And most importantly, some people are prone to head lice. I think the common assumption is that head lice only live in dirty hair. However, you could have the cleanest hair around, but head lice do NOT discriminate. ****

It does not have to be a pain to deal with. A blow dryer set at it's hottest temperature kills lice. You will never have to use any of those poisonous shampoos again.

oh dont worry your itchy story does not make me feel itchy lol.
lice are really not easy to control. i have four children and during their toodler years when one of them had a lice its spreads out to all my children and unluckily even to me. the lice shampoo is quite expensive here so i just try to make sure their heads are clean and i take of the lice one by one. but it is really hard to control. even if they are sleeping i try to look at their head and see if there are lice. sometimes even you well maintained their head and hair still they will catch it specially when the child starts to go to school. well just my observation. my children are all teens now and thank goodness that they no longer have any lice.

Ok,I had never heard of nits or knew what they were until 13 years ago when my son bought home a note from school saying he had nits and of cause we all got a bout of them. Everytime we got rid of them he would pick them up from some-where .Anyway
as I said never heard of them all through my school years or the girls school years.

I got lice for the first time at 26, okay so I ams till 26 but that's not the point! I FREAKED out! I never had lice as a child and I even confirmed this with my mom. My husband thought it was funny cause I was ready to automatically go and shave my head(my hair was almost to my butt) But because the shampoo is so expensive I did cut my hair to shoulder length so I could get enough to treat me and the kids if they needed it.... Haven't found any since then on me or the kids but I am still itchy... Just the idea.... Disgusting But I do have bad dandruff so I got a dandruff shampoo the other day and hopefully I will start feeling better...

We use to suffer headlice as kids in our rustic villages-infact the infestations were so wide spread that it was almost a miracle to find a child without the "headlights"!

no, not really. my now 11 year old daughter got head lice twice while in kindergarten and grade one and it was because her hair was long and thick and clean (lice only like clean hair contrary to popular opinion!) what i found was a pain was having to wash all her blankets and sheets and having her favourite stuffies go on 'vacation' in the garage for a couple of weeks to air them out.

I hate lice, there are always loads of reports of them in our school but so far luckily my children have only had them once. They did not get them from school though but when we went on holiday funnily enough. Yes my head is now really itchy thanks to reading this discussion!

Well, you shouldn't tell everyone that but I had it twice from other people.
I used a thing called Scarboma. Bathed myself from head to foot in it and sent all my clothes and linen to wash and went to work.
I felt like an awful hospital case for an entire day.
Had this odour, not a bad one, but one anyway.
Then kept checking for about a week after.
I got rid of them each time - THANK GOD !!!

Yes my head is itchy. Maybe you have not rinsed the shampoo out of your hair properly. This can happen. Maybe you have eaten something that did not agree with you. Well I am glad you do not have headlice Anne. They are awful things to get rid of. I have four Children too and when one of them got it once, they all got it. I bought an electric comb from argos and we have never had then again.
I hope you get to the bottom of your itch and it stops as well. Good luck.

The last time I had head lice was a very long time ago. My daughter had brought home a school friend to spend the night and as it turns out the little friend had lice.
Both my daughter and I have very long thick hair. I shaved my sons head, and was afraid I was going to have to resort to that with my daughter and I because we could not get rid of them. I spend a small fortune on shampoos and washed all the bedding again and again, but the next thing I knew I could feel them crawling around again... and was CERTAIN others could even SEE them crawling around, hehehe. It was a nightmare!
Then I heard that a blow dryer kills them. I started using a blow dryer set at it's hottest temperature everyday for a couple of weeks, and then periodically throughout the rest of my kids childhood... and we never had lice again. It didn't matter if their entire school was infested, we never got them again. I can't believe schools don't post this information!!!!

Hi anne,
Well I'm glad you didn't have any, phew! it's been a long time since we've had nits in our house my daughter seemed to always have them when she was little even though I did her hair all the time, just became an habit that once she'd had a bath I would put plenty of conditioner on her hair and then just sit with her and the nit comb, combing it through apparantley this was the best way to get rid of any. My kids are older now so we haven't had that little problem for years.

Head lice are parasitic insects that live in the hair and scalp of humans. The scientific name for head louse is Pediculus humanus capitis. Another name for infestation with head lice is pediculosis.Head lice develop in three forms: nits(Nits are head lice eggs), nymphs(Nits hatch into nymphs.), and adults(An adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has six legs, and is tan to greyish- white.).
