5 tons of food from 1 acre of land?!?

The crop they grew was corn and after all of the expense that they went through, they didn't make much money. In fact, they lost $19.

The corn they grew ended-up going to feed livestock and since we have so much livestock in this country, there's a lot of corn that is needed. It's a cheap crop to grow, but with all the supplies and machinery involved, it's a costly process. I highly recommend this movie, "King Korn" which if you have Netflix, you can watch it online. That's how I'm doing it.

Corn makes cows fat so the documentary went on to examine the quality of the meat we eat. These guys just wanted to plant some corn and the experiment went in a whole different direction.

I'll see if I can get to watch it^_^ it's always interesting to see the fundemental ways corn's apart of our lives in this country.

I don't intend to grow feed, but food. If my plants are very happy, I can sell a bunch of fresh produce and such and hopefully for fairly cheap. No machinery's gonna be involved, and we have a well here, so there won't be water costs...and even then I intend to use dishwater and as much rainwater as I can gather...(compost out of plant matter, from banana peels to grass cuttings). And all my seeds, and I've a good amount of them, were bought for dollar each, so the initial cost is very low and the cost for turning it into something profitable will just be all the work I put into it.

I expect there will be losses to accompany the gains, but this'll be my first year...it's expected if I'm gonna turn it into something of a long-term thing.

Still, the idea that you can use one acre and et five tons of product in farming...even if was a bit industrialized, really bightens my expectations!

The movie actually talks about when farmers were paid to not produce anything. I don't think they do that anymore, but I haven't checked yet.

I should have really gotten further into the documentary (King Korn) before I posted this discussion, but I was so shocked!

I watch documentaries online through Netflix. It's the coolest thing EVER! I'm still on my 2-week free membership but I think I'm going to go with their $8.99 monthly plan so I can still get these movies online.

Wow that's a good past-time. As for the corn, yeah, rarely does a person grow a lot of crops or other food sources for private consumption. They need to be disposed of, hence, they are sold. Money, sadly, makes the world go round these days.
