Has your writing ever been stolen?

This is why I am so hesitant to post my writing. Now I'm a little worried about my work on Triond. How do I know for sure if someone has copied my work? What is copyscape?

I am sorry your work got stolen. It is not nice to find it somewhere else and this is happening too much. No one seems to care either and nothing really gets done about it. Unless you have thousands of pounds to spare for a law suit it is only worth reporting to have it removed. I think tougher penalties need to be brought in for this, especially for ordinary people.

I wrote a poem once and it got stolen. I found it on another website some had girl opened. I sent her an email and told her to take it off but she did not. I am annoyed about this also. You think it would of frightened her me knowing that she stole it.

This is off putting! All your effort and originality gone in seconds, thanks to internet! I fear this as well and plagiarism goes big time here. we cannot avoid it. I use google Copyscape but then that doesn't ensure safety. i feel the forum you are writing for should be intimated and also the forum where we find the theft. It'as easy to copy from blogs but not that easy to earn from it for most ensure proper screening. But then the whole thing is so annoying. Why on earth we should go about this and waste our time! But there isn't anything we can do about it either.

Keep writing though. Do not stop.

yup, but that is the joy of having your stuff published on the internet. it is hard to guard against something like this. i am sorry that i cant help you any but know that you are not the only one.

Now I'm suddenly worried about my writing.:O (-goes to check Google, Yahoo, and other websites-)I don't think my writing has ever been stolen though. (Hopefully not..) I have no idea how I would react and what I would do.:P I would probably panic and try to report the person who stole it. Usually my stories have more than one chapter, and I rarely post more than one chapter on the internet. (Just in case~) I'm not exactly worried, but I'll have to be sure to check Google, Yahoo, etc. for my stories.

This is Scary, and there needs to be something to STOP this, but I know people have probably done this here, etc. and it is getting crazy. Why do people think that this is appropriate and try and earn a few extra dollars from this. But personally it would probably take someone patroling the Internet 24/7 to catch all of these people and stop these kind of things.

Not that I'm aware of, but I certainly hope not. This is every writer's worst nightmare...It's something that I've been wary of the entire time I started posting seriously on this site. I have posted some of my poetry and partial essays that I've written and to have someone else steal and take credit for my work would of course infuriate me. I was researching the copyright law and technically they say that you don't have to pay for copyright anymore for your work to be legally protected. The old law ended in the late 80s/early 90s I believe. The new law states that as soon as you lift your pencil from your work or press the print button on the computer, your work is automatically copyrighted. It could be anything from a novel to a doodle on a napkin. I think a lot of people take their work to be officially copyrighted by the copyright office to further protect their work though. I write everything that I want to be protected on Microsoft word now--and then copy & paste it here. I keep back up copies in case I need to prove that I'm in fact the owner of my work that someone has stolen. I used to put some of my photography on here for all to view in my profile, but I realized that image files on the computer tend to be the #1 source of copyright infringement, so I deleted them soon after. I will definitely consider searching things from my posts on Google and Copyscape from time to time. Thank you for the tip. I've been careful not to share most of my important work on myLot. I keep the work that I want protected safe in my documents folder and filing cabinet. It is unfortunate that you had to experience what you did, but I'm glad you found out about it. oh thats just terrible. im so sorry. people are just as lazy online as the outside world it seems. leaveing the hard work up to others and just living off others work. they should be locked up or at least made to keep off line a few days to teach em a lesson.

I am new on this site. I do however have another site that I do write on. It never crossed my mind that copying could take place. I guess I'm real new to the internet world. I never started on sites that pay until my husband got laid off, and now I'm always looking to make money without having to put up money. I want to thank you for letting me know that things like that can happen. I will keep my eyes open at all times.
