Computers For Kids. What Age Is Best ... ? |
| |
| I ahve a daughter who is now 4 years old and I am comtempaleting if I should buy a basic mini computer for her to play her educational games and learn from there. I am just afraid that it would be too young to start her using computers and may not be good for her eyes. What age would you think is best to start a child on computers ? | | | | | |

| | I guess at the age of 4 or 5 sounds fair enough. It's true that they need to know how the handle the mouse well enough before they can go ahead with the computers. | | | |

| | The schools are starting children using computers in preschool. It is imparative that the children start learning to use the computer as early as possible. If you're worried about her eyesight, limit the amount of time on the computer and have long breaks between use. But, with a 4 year old, they will limit themselves by their attention span. Your daughter can learn so much on the computer at this age, from reading, math, other languages and more. Her mind is a sponge right now and it would be wonderful for her to start absorbing before she starts school. In California, children are expected to be able to read before they start Kindergarten. So, it would be practical for her to start on the computer and start with the fun children's learning programs. To start, should supervise until she is comfortable and familiar with how to use it. | | | | | | |

| | That sounds reasonable enough. Limiting them on the hours of usage. | | | |

| | Both my children started on the computer when they where very young like around 2. We had educational games appropriate for their age. My son is now 9 and has a very high IQ and some areas is considered genious. My daughter is 6 and is ahead of all the other students in math and reading and amazes her teacher when they have computer lab. I agree that monitoring your childs access to the computer is very important but if she is interested let her roll with it. You will be surprised at how fast she will learn. | | | | | | |

| | My son is 2 years old now. He can open our laptop by himself now but do not know how to play the songs in flash. He shows much interest on computer and every night he'll ask us to watch cartoon or songs in flash type. He does not like to watch TV or books. I'm afraid that too much time with computer will be harmful to his eyes. Recently we buy him electromotion toys in order to attract him from computer. In fact I do not agree so little childen to play with computer. | | | | | | |

| | That's very good of him. I guess boys with electronic gadgets are a match. Maybe when he is 4 years old, he can do more wonders with the computers. | | | |

| | Good to hear somebody nearby on the site. I understand the joy you cherish watching the growth of your son. I have a grandson at the age 5, and we stayed together until he was 4. I had the same feeling, notising every and each change he made althrough with us. Now your son is 2 years old, right time to start something positive for him, but the computer is really too much for the moment. Instead, better spend some time with him singsing songs, telling stories. In due time, you will see surprising results. I used to lullaby my grandson singing the song Xiaoyanzi and Twinkling Star. Though not understanding the meaning, he could follow almost right from he was able to speak. I learned that pre-bed time listening to recorded stories is also good for his accumulation of vocabulary, which in time will become his active vocabulary, and help his speaking ability in the long run. As you know, Chinese kids tend to be week in hand-on skills, so it is wise to guide him in that direction parallelly, so that he can have both legs strong instead of being good only at book knowledge. wish you happiness, and keep in contact. | | | |

| | If you think of the computer as a learning tool there is no limitation. There are many educational programs for young children. Of course you can't just put them infront of the computer and expect them to get it. I had a lot of fun with my kids before they could even read or write with educational age apropriate programs. When I was a kid a computer was only something you would find in a business.(I'm a 60's baby) Today almost every house has at least one computer and in our future, well who's to say. I know that by giving my children the oportunity to learn about the computer at a young age with that huge sponge of a brain has helped them to be more confident at school, where they do have computers in kindergarten these days. One of the things is any type of Educational Store like the Learning is Fun store will carry computer programs like books that you can interact with on the computer, some I have found will let the kids change the story, they can choose to have the computer say one word at a time or the whole page. This really helped both my kids get interested in reading books. My kids never played alone on the computer until they were 5 and that was with me in the same room so if they needed help I was there, infact my kids don't get on the computer unless I am in the same part of the house. Both my computers are password protected and they can't just open them up and turn them on, they also have time limits on the computer. So on that note I'm done I have spent too much time on the laptop tonight........I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and please have a safe and SOBER New Years!! | | | |

| | Yes,there should be time limited for children on computer. And there should be some rules for them to obey. Use computer but not misuse computer. | | | |

| | My eldest grandson could go into the dos and adjust a game program at the age of 5 so we all had to password our important programs. My youngest grandson started using his mums lap top at 3. The earlier the better I say | | | | | | |

| | I think it sounds reasonable enough to play for a while and rest the eyes. Except that kids these days watch television and then the DVDs and then the computers. Just afraid that it may be too much. | | | |

| | let them learn the basics at the age of 4... it will be helpful for them, but make some limitations like no. of hours or minutes a day, or just on weekends. Let them focus on educational sites where they would learn a lot. Avoid sites not suitable for children. | | | | | | |
