ago! 'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's
going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'
'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long
before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.'
'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a
pack is ridiculous.'
'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?'
'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire
outside help at the store.'
'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'
'Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it
impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.'
'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they
let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL of DAMN in it.'
'I read the other day where some scientists thinks it's possible to put
a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some
fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas ..'
'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for
$75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday
they'll be making more than the President.'
'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be
electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.'
'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married
women are having to work to make ends meet.'
'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire
someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'
'Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to
be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.'
'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'
'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes
half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the
best people to congress.'
'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'
'There is no sense going to Edmonton or Saskatoon more for a weekend, it
costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'
'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital
it's too rich for my blood.'
'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

thumbupGreat comments from people all those years ago. I bet they would all die of shock if they had the hard times of this last year.

I really enjoyed (and Laughed) reading all of those. Great article and very intereting indeed.thumbup

Its all very true! I was married on Oct 8 1955. We went on a trip to Florida for our Honeymoon. I had $300 to spend, we were away three weeks. When we got back I still had $100 in my pocket.

Yes! Good old days. When I came back from honeymoon many year ago I had a good bit of money left and I bought a corner unit that stands proudly in my dinning room today.

Exactly! our marriage has lasted for 53 years. We are still happily married, but its been like 2 life terms with no parole, and no time off for good behavior.

Great article. So many things remain the same as so many change. We still complain about the price of groceries and gas. And it seems that kids never change. I once read that Socrates had the same complaint about teenagers. Funny that for a time all the boys did wear their hair as long as the girls. I remember those ducktail hair dos for the boys. The teachers also worried about the boys pants riding on the hips too. They had to wear a belt to school. I believe a lot of things have gone down hill since then such as the language in the movies. It has really gotten bad. Not just the language but the se* too. I wonder how we will compare in another 55 years

Our third boy just had to have a Afro. (haircut) It stuck out all over his head like a giant Dandelion. He enjoyed it for a while, but it was labor intensive, so he finally had it trimmed. Thank God!

When My son who is now 46 and in high school back in the 70's he decided he had to have long hair. We compromised by letting him as long as it was off the collar. He went into the army after graduation so went the long hair. He did have pretty hair too. It curled under in a page boy.

Hi barehugs, As they say "them were the days", but those comments sound very funny now. I think they still say "hell" and "damn" in movies once in a while lol. I remember these times very well although I was still in High school. My parents had an income of less than $100.00 a month for a family of five. My mother cut my hair, we couldn't afford the 50 cents and we didn't have a car. Well we've seen a few changes since then, I wonder what the next 53 will bring if anyone is around to see it? Blessings.

Its not the verbiage in the movies that I find most humorous, but the incessant cigarette smoking. Obviously it was the in-thing,to light up and blow smoke at the ceiling. To be sexy, and desirable all movie-stars had to smoke like Chimneys!

Rumor has it that Thomas Watson, the president of IBM who made the company great (unlike now) said that he thought there was a world market for maybe 5 mainframe computers.

I have old computer magazines where they commented on the wonders of 2 floppy drives or a 10 Meg hard drive..who could ever need more storage than that. Of course at one time 64K of memory was huge (if you remember these things in the not too distant past, please respond and let me know).

I remember when Apple came out with the first GUI (windows like) interface (way before Microsoft) and they said it would never be in color due to processor and memory constraints.

They guy who masterminded UPS was also told by a college professor that his company would never work.

Orville Wright said that no plane will ever be able to fly from NY to Paris.

1955 was the not only time in history that people lacked foresight.

I'll never forget the Commodore 64 I bought for the kids. A teacher from the local Public School came right to the house to give lessons. That was Great Fun. I learned right along with the boys as we programed the ball that bounced around the screen.

IT sure brought back a lot of memories for me as well. When you live through a time period you tend to forget the off beat forecasts. The mistakes of the Past are sometimes the Jokes of the future. Who would have dreamed in the 50's, that America would have a Black President Fifty years in the future?

I was a teenager at the time. I remember my parents going balistic because of the duck tail haircuts and complaining about the cost of stamps. At least we got medical insurance then. Back then we had to pay to go to the hospital. In fact, when I had to get my eyes operated on, my father wanted me to give him $200 of what I did not have. Yes times were different then. Oh and we could not use the word Stupid in front of my father.

As a young married man I didn't get caught up in Beatle-Mania. The hair was awful, and the music not much better. The kids caught on right away, and I got used to the music and the hair. Just took a bit of time!

myLot reputation of 78/100. suspenseful (19608)   ranked 1,680 out of 32,937 in life  4 years ago

I was an Elvis fan. It was amazing how crazy we were. Beatle mania had nothing on us. lol But it is amazing that how much things have stayed the same. And the stamp prices, with the wages one got then and there was no such thing as emails (hadn't been invented yet) and in some places, no telephones, writing letters was the only form of communication so if the price of a stamp went up even one cent that was a hardship.

wow, thats interesting! it just goes to prove that complaining is the normal way of life! i am a huge history fanatic and its interesting in regards to things that people were talking about things that they were not sure about happening (ie: walking on the moon) i like to read books about the 20th century and the progress that was made.

For me the Cars were the best part. I had a 55 Pontiac and a 57 Chev. The Pontiac developed a tic in the engine after I got it up to 101 MPH on Hwy 401. The Chev was my brother's, and he was forever replacing the engine. When he finally got tired of that he sold it to me. I was too busy farming to tinker with a car engine.
