Are Professional Politicians Really Who Should be Running the Country?

I just don't think professional politicians are the best qualified people to run a country. They get degrees in law and political science and learn how to give speeches and raise money and that pay for play is just part of the game as long as they don't get caught. They have no understanding of how to run a business or government, of technology(and thus create all kinds of legislation that does more harm than good, i.e. ethanol from corn), of health issues, etc., etc. We have have a bloated set of laws and especially tax system because of things always having to be redone to correct errors or because of their special interests. Government waste is rampant because they have no training or experience in running anything properly.

In a word....NO. We need term limits on every elected office. That way you get people their that want to do the job...not people just looking for a free ride with lots of perks.

Yes, and they shouldn't be the ones appointed to cabinet posts either.

I agree. Once you serve your terms you are out of government and politics forever. That woud solve so many problems.

I agree that business experience would be very beneficial but I don't see how you can write, vote or pass legislation without some experience with the law. I do agree with the poster who suggested term limits so that we don't have the same butts sitting in those seats year after year but, in my opinion, the best representatives are those who are the most well rounded in the areas of the law, government and economics.

Some experience with the law would be good, so put in some lawyers who have really practiced law and weren't just being policitions or doing law inorder to get elected to some office. Having a lot of lawyers in Congress has not given us many good pieces of legislation, many of the things passed are really bad and don't even do what they are supposed to do. In our complicated technical world we need people who also can understand technical things and not just go by polls or public opinion or extreme factions who are very short sighted and create as many problems as they think they solve vut usually don't.

You sound as if you would like to see busnessmen run the country and Donald trump and E Ross Perot would definitely agree with you. But then we would have to worry about national security and diplomacy. The truth is no one man can handle it all and that is why we have a Congress, a diplomatic corps and a Supreme Court. I believe a number of congressmen have been businessmen. Mitt Rommney comes to mind.

We need more ordinary people that know how things that congress does effects our day to day life. Not super rich dynastys that never worked a real day in their life besides politics.
