Comparing the cost of some Inaugurations |
| |
| Clinton's last inauguration was $42 million. Bush's last inauguration cost $40 million. OBAMA's inauguration cost over $150 million! I doubt that it cost anything for Lincoln's inauguration. Here's some information about one of Lincoln's inaugurations. Look how simple! " Abraham Lincoln's Inauguration March 4, 1861 Monday, March 4, 1861, was a big day for Abraham Lincoln and for America. That morning, he and outgoing President James Buchanan left the Willard Hotel, which is nearby the White House, in a horse-drawn carriage bound for the Capitol. Shortly after 1 p.m., Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger B. Taney administered the presidential oath of office. With the swearing of his official vows, Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. His speech was a very important one because he would be speaking not only as the new president but also as the leader of a nation in crisis. Lincoln was well prepared. He had sought lots of help to deliver the right message in his inaugural address. " http://www.americaslibrar... "Bush's 2005 inauguration cost $40 million in comparison, and I am not exaggerating when I say that the media lost their minds over it. Some of the many choice quotes: “Many have wondered whether, given the war and all of our security challenges right now, it’s appropriate to have a lavish and expensive inaugural celebration?” — ABC’s Claire Shipman to Laura Bush in a taped interview shown on the January 20 Good Morning America." "“On World News Tonight/Sunday,President Bush prepares for his second inauguration. In a time of war and natural disaster, is it time for a lavish celebration?” — ABC’s Terry Moran on World News Tonight, January 16." http://www.blogher.com/wh... Do you think you will ever hear anything about the $150 million plus that has been spent for this one from the press? Do you remember Sanford and Son? Last night, I saw a clip of him (he played Lamont Sanford, the son). He is now a minister and he asked why this $150 million could not have gone for a better cause with this country in a recession. | | | | | |

| | I think we can probably look for more changes like this. The stimulus bill, perhaps? | | | |

| | Lavish spectacles while the economy has dipped farther and farther seems the wrong way to go. I think we learn by example and today was not a very good example for a President that campaigned on change! And I doubt that he will fix the economy. Did you see the stock market today? It was the WORSE day for ANY inauguration they say. http://www.wnd.com/index.... | | | |

| | I agree that his inauguration costs were very excessive. Double the cost of GWBs, maybe, but triple? Come on! I don't know who gets to decide the price tag but this isn't a wedding that daddy and mommy are paying for. The people are paying for it. Show some respect. Anyway. I know Lincoln did have a big fancy dance, so I doubt he spent nothing on his inauguration. There's a museum exhibition on the Lincoln inauguration that I heard about on the radio... I can't remember what museum it was. | | | | | | |

| | I didn't mean the balls. I was speaking only of the Inauguration. From what I quoted above, he rode to the White House and took the oath, very simple. | | | |

| | Well, the 150 million is including the 10 or more (I can't keep track) balls that were thrown. I have actually heard that the cost of the Bush administration's inaugural ball was in the same price range but because security costs weren't included in the final price, it looks like he spent a lot less. I don't know the validity of that, though. | | | |

| | Looks like it cost more than we thought or it was first said. "New York: Despite country facing worst economic downturn since great depression, Barack Obama’s inauguration will come with a hefty price tag estimating at more than $170 million, a media report said on Tuesday." "The actual swearing in ceremony will cost $1.24 million, ABC News reported, quoting spokeswoman for Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural ceremonies." http://www.livemint.com/2... | | | |

| | You know, I pretty much stopped following politics after the election... I've never been much into politics anyways. But I vaguely remember hearing something about how Michelle Obama spent quite a bit of money on a new wardrobe... is that true or am I confusing her with someone else? Maybe it was Palin. Anyways, that does seem a bit ridiculous. Our tax dollars hard at work! I'm sure Lincoln's inauguration had to cost something, they had to have had secret service back then and if nothing else they had to double up on security that day for both presidents. If they didn't have secret service, they probably decided to start that right after Lincoln was shot! | | | | | | |

| | Well, I have no idea what she paid for the one outfit she wore yesterday at the Inauguration. But I just read that we could buy it in the Spring in the Barney's Department Store for a mere $1,500! Let's rush out and buy one; surely every woman can afford that. From what I read only the former president and Lincoln were in the horse-drawn carriage that made it's way to the swearing in ceremony at the White House. There was no Secret Service watching the Presidents until I think 1901,after the 3rd President was killed. | | | |

| | It's all a bit ridiculous. I think it would be interesting to see an itemised bill and see just where the money went. I reckon stuff must have been purchased that will never be used again...what happens to everything? How many causes could this money have gone towards? Is it really necessary for the Obama children to have designer wardrobes? Everything is excessive and there is so much waste! Michelle Obama's gowns and outfits are to be worn once and then to go to the Smithsonian?....that's ludicrous. What has fashion to do with politics? Someone needs to stand up and pull in the reins and set a good example to the community at large. | | | | | | |

| | singlemommy, I agree with you. We are paying and we weren't even invited. But, had I been invited, I wouldn't have gone. Who in their right wants to be in the middle of that mess? But I think the money could have been put better use. It's okay to have an inauguration, but it didn't have to be that huge! | | | |

| | OMG I had no idea Obamas campaign cost that much. What ever happened to grass roots campaign. I added $5.00 to it.....LOL.....Honestly I think there should be a very serious limit on the amount a canidatew can spend and it should be way below that. I am very sorry to hear this. I also think every politician should take a 20% pay cut until the economic crisis is over!!!! | | | | | | |

| | I heard awhile ago on the news that people got all up in arms about President Bush's 2nd inauguration costing $40 million, but not one word has been said about the upwards of $170 million spent on Obama's inauguration. And this is hard economic times we are under when you think they would be more prudent in spending money. | | | |

| | I'm not certain of how you economy is fairing right now - I know you're in recession but I don't know the details of how it affects your lives. If the prices are higher than they were 4 years ago, then I would understand why the inauguration of Obama cost more. Also, if it was a political move for him - to woo some political factions perhaps and it bore good fruits in political undertakings, then I still think it was well spent - but as I said, I am not that well informed about it. But solely from the perspective of a third world citizen, I think that we would have made use of that money better by feeding our poor and supporting our education system :P but what are the chances of us receiving such amount, right? Thanks for the response on my discussion! | | | | | | |
