| | In all my life I have never heard of a dog being trained to use a litter box. That is for cats and rabbits who have it in their genes to dig and bury their waste. Dogs do not do this. Dogs get trained to go outside for that purpose, starting with paper training when they are puppies and progressing to getting them to go to the door to let you know when they need to go outside. I cannot imagine a dog ever being trained to use a litter box because they do not dig and bury their waste. | | | | | | |

| | Capirani, well, now you will have heard of a dog trained to go to a litter box. I have an Italian Greyhound. I trained her to go to a litter box. She was so tiny as a puppy that she couldn't step over the edge of the box, so I cut one end down to a more manageable height. She could step in easily. I line the bottom with litter pan liners, then put newspapers on top of that. A dog can be trained to go in one area of a yard, so why not a litter box? I took her to the box frequently and every time I told her in the same words and tone, "Go potty". It was not a command, just told her in a pleasing tone. When she did piddle on the floor, I would soak that up onto a piece of newspaper and put it in her pan. I continued taking her there. She very quickly understood and she did both jobs in there. She received lavish praise and hugs. I did not give her food treats. She is ten years old now and still using that same pan. It is nice because I can leave the house for the day and not have to worry about getting home to take her outside to potty. | | | |

| | I am going to do that, and not giving one's dog treats is a good idea, because then the puppy will not expect to get a treat just for using the litter, Thank you for all the wonderful advice. | | | |

| | I don't know about litter boxes, but most dogs are taken outside or for a walk until they do their business. My daughter usually just let her dog out in the fenced in back yard until she finishes. You just have to keep at it until he learns it. And after a few times they will let you know when they are ready to go. I have never seen anyone train a dog to use a litter box. I will do a little research on it and see what I can come up with. Good Luck. | | | | | | |

| | I dont know about the litter box for dogs, it works with cats but I dont think so for dogs. I have 5 chihuahuas and we let them out several times but we have those papers with blue back for accidents. | | | | | | |

| | The papers are called WEE WEE pads. You can buy them in a pet shop. I have heard of puppies being trained in a litter box but I never did that. You have to train your puppy to go outside otherwise he will be afraid to go outdoors. A friend of mine has a pitbull and she trained her to go on the Wee Wee pads and the dog is afraid of her own shadow. She is terrified to go outside and her house smells like dog. Train your dog to go outside. | | | |

| | I never thought of that, I will try to do both, my main problem is that we do not have a fence, and that well being a small dog. I can see your point, I am planning in walking my dog down the block. Thanks for the advice. | | | |

| | Hey Shelly! I didn't know that they used litter boxes, but that's kinda cool! My girfriend has had her chiuahua for about 10 or so years but she walks her so I don't know about the litter box! I guess you just keep bringing the dog to the box and try to teach it that way. Just be very patient until it learns that's where it goes to do its business! And yes they are very territorial and like to yell alot! They can be a little mean sometimes so you have to train your doggie to be nice! Just give it lots of love and teach it to be sweet and friendly. Is it a boy or girl so I stop calling it and it? | | | | | | |

| | Shelly, if you look up in the first set of responses, you will see how I trained my dog to use a litter box. I think girl dogs are even easier to train for them because they squat and don't hike up their leg to pee - so they don't miss. ha, ha | | | |

| | Hello it can be done my best friend did this for her dogs. Make sure you don't use actual kitty litter though because dogs eat that use rabbit bedding. Here is the link. I hope I have helped you. http://hubpages.com/hub/H... | | | | | | |

| | patriciaqualls is right, do not use kitty litter. And, really, you don't have to go out and purchase rabbit bedding. I just lay newspapers in the bottom of the litter box and change it two or three (or more) times a day. I wash the pan once a week with a little bleach in the water, and rinse it well. In spring, summer, fall, I like to set the pan out in the sun for a while. It makes me think it is fresher -- I don't know if it is or not, but I like to think so. | | | |

| | Absolutely my pleasure :) I haven't had a dog since my last had to be put down a couple of winters ago. I really miss him but am not quite ready for another dog. I've been thinking a lot about getting a small one but it's SO cold here in the winter that it's not easy to contemplate putting a tiny dog outdoors to do their business. I had looked into the idea of litter box training and was actually very pleased to see it's possible. Like you, I think it would be worth the effort. My mom used to paper train her dogs (or use the bed liner type sheets that someone else suggested here... absorbent top with waterproof blue backing). She was constantly washing the floor and trying to deal with the odor. I was thinking (and hoping) that litter box training might alleviate some of that. She also had some success with her dogs by putting the newspaper or liner sheet on one of those flat rubber boot mats (that people use in the winters to keep their entry floors clean). The dog didn't like standing on it at first but, once used to it, it was easier to wash and sanitize than the floor. | | | |

| | It sounds like your mom works hard to keep her pets. I hope you will get your puppy when you are ready. I was once reading a story in a chicken soup for the soul that this lady had dog and that together they run on the most cold of weathers, of course it was the dog that motivate her. I imagine small dogs are different, you will have your dog when you are ready and good luck to you too. | | | |
