Is it morally right that actors, receive huge salary? |
| |
| I am a soccer fan. I often read about the astronomical weekly wages that the soccer players receive when they sign a new contract. A few weeks ago I was reading that Manchester United Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo crashed his newly bought car Ferrari. Most probably he was able to replace it with a weekly wage. I do think that the more money you have the less that you appreciate and value things. If I had a Ferrari (which I will never have because my salary does no permit) I would treasure it as if I had gold. Is it morally right that actors, singers, footballers and other sports persons receive astronomical salaries while people are on the verge of poverty? | | I don't know about morally wrong. I mean they are paid what the deemed to be worth in their field. I personally think they are all overpaid. What does one person need with 10 million dollars a year. It disgusts me to hear of some celebrity who just singed a new 70 million contract. Even if that contract is for 5 or 10 years it is still more money than one person should need. ANd then you hear about so many of them file bankruptcy. What is that about. How can you be broke if you earned over 10 million dollars. I may just be picky about this because I will never earn that much money, but if I did you can bet that I would share it with my friends, family and charities. | | | | | | |

| | I am not really a soccer fan, but my late father was. As much as he loved the game, he always used to say that the world had gone mad with the huge salaries players were getting, many of them far more than a brain surgeon in some cases. I don't really hold judgement on things like that, because if I was to have a bit of luck and start earning an absolute fortune for something I loved doing, I wouldn't like to be judged for it either. Whatever our karma, I believe it is something that we are given to learn from. :-) Derek | | | | | | |

| | Why not? It doesn't hurt me in any way if someone I don't know and don't have any dealings with is paid more than me. Actors and football players are paid by private companies - it's the shareholders' money, so it's their business, not mine. If this Ronaldo bloke got a pay cut, it wouldn't make my life any easier, so good luck to him. We're all entitled to use whatever talents we've got to the best advantage possible. | | | | | | |

| | i wouldnt say that its morally incorrect for footballers or actors to receive huge salary because we just read magazines to know about them and how much they earn but if we ever sneak into their daily routine we will be astonished because they work all day and night to achieve that. we all have the right to become popular like them but its always the hard work that pays. I even believe that even people who do some sort of social work must be paid well. | | | | | | |

| | I guess they deserve what they get. If they didn't get paid well we wouldn't have the sports or the actors to have good tv.. so I guess it is a wash. Many of the actors are benevolent with their money and help out a lot of causes, so without them there would be a lot less money going into charities. | | | | | | |

| | I don't think any one person is worth that high of a salary. I know they bring in money for these movies or sports teams, but no person should get paid that much. | | | | | | |

| | yeah i heard bout that and also kaka being offered a mind boggling amount of 242 million pounds ...whats so special about him???Also i agree that the more money you have the less you appreciate it..and even i would if i had a Ferrari take immense care of it but maybe there's got to be some control over the amounts these players are receiving...they've got to lower their transfer and salary paid or they should donate heavily..all of them... | | | | | | |

| | I dun think it's morally wrong.. After all, they are paid what they are worth.. Since they are able to excel in that particular sports, so why not pay them?? After all, it's not something that u or me as well as others can do it, and thus they are really worth so much.. Imagine the amount of pay of CEOs in those top companies are getting?? They are not doing anything much but yet their pay is so high.. It's due to their talent and ability ^_^ | | | | | | |

| | I don't see what morality has to do with anyone's earnings. Someone from a 3rd world country might ask the same question of you or I. One thing about it though - - they sure can't take it with them when they die. Like old Job once said: we come into the world naked and that's the way we leave it. Have a great week. | | | |

| | It has nothing to do with talent or ability. It has to do what the market will pay. If people feel that they are being paid too much it`s simple stop going to the movies. Then the salaries will fall back into line with what some think they should be.However if the movie brings in $400,000,000 why should they get a piece of the action. | | | |

| | You have raised two issues here, one is about morality and the other about the astronomical salaries that our "superstars" and "divas" make. Morally it's right for anyone to receive wages/salaries that are commensurate with his/her work, effort and output. And I mean anyone, not just the superstars - like its right for Julia Roberts to make $20M for appearing in a single movie and its also right for a kid serving drinks in a bar to make $1 per drink served or whatever. The second issue is the huge wages and salaries that these guys make. One thing we should never forget is that these guys are paid what they are paid because we love and adore them, and because we want to pay them the astronomical amounts that we do. And by we, I mean you and me. The consumers of the final products. The guys who flock to movie halls and who pay handsomely to see these guys do their thing on the big screens. The soccer fans who flock to soccer matches and who are loyal enough to purchase season's tickets well in advance. The guys who have pay-per-view and who pay to watch live matches on tv. You see, these superstars rely on us for their huge salaries and wages. Everything comes back down to us, to either support their huge wages and salaries or to revise what they get downwards. How? By not attending those live matches, not going to the movie theatres and so on. Can we do that? I don't think so, we are addicted to these ways and just can't live without them. Meaning we have already made this choice to support those huge salaries and wages. This is where the morality question should come up. Ask yourself if it morally right to visit movie theatres or go to football matches while there are people around the world starving. The situation might only change when individuals, me and you, actually decide to ask ourselves these tough morality questions. And I can't see this happening soon! SO as it is, enjoy what our starts have to offer, because after all is said and done, you paid for it! | | | | | | |

| | My friend, reflecting is just but a good thing. Reflecting is one thing. Seeing things as they are, accepting what you see and CHANGING what you are honest enough to admit should be changed is quite another. To quote somebody: We are damned if we do, We are damned if we don't! | | | |
