What do you think of American politics? |
| |
| I live in Europe and American politics for me seems over screwed up. It could be the news I see broadcasting American political life in the wrong angle... Americans, how is it really there about politics? Is it really a democracy there? | | | | | |

| | It would be more of a democracy if liberals would stop restricting our rights, taking our freedoms away and trying to re write the constitution. | | | | | | |

| | Lindery - you don't say where in Europe you live. I live in America - I vote in America. My husband is British and at present we are in Britain working on getting him a rresidents visa for the USA because although he has lived his entire life in Sheffeld he has had enough of the nonsense and stupidity they are dishing out here. I watch the news here and I read the papers and since we are at present having to deal with the housing in Sheffield I have to say - while a lot Americans think our politics is a screwed up mess, it is nothing compared to this in England. We have spent practically all our time since November 7th when I arrived in Sheffield from the USA trying to get things sorted with the Council Housing. Talk about a load of brain dead bimbos. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. We have repeatedly taken documents they have asked for and we are still having to do it. They either ask for something different or ask again for the ones we have already produced because they can't find them. They try telling us we have not produced them even though we have receipts that they have given us. Most of the people you deal with refuse to give you their name and I can see why because 99% of them are total incompetents and shouldn't have the jobs they have. I have a 10 year old great grandaughter in the USA and she is smarter than most of those we have come across in the Sheffield Housing System. Yes our politics are a democracy at present but Obama, with his first few days in office is trying to change that democarcy to Obama-ism. I hope he gets his head out of the clouds soon and realizes that those that put him in office can take him out the same way by voting against him. I am willing to give the man a chance. Ask me in 6 months what I think. By then I will be back in te USA and hopefully our President will be doing a good job. | | | | | | |

| | I am from Latvia (Baltic States). Your story sound more of bureaucracy which is very wide in my country. I didn't know in Britain it is so strong. Good Luck with preparing documents for your husbands. | | | |

| | America has never been a democracy. We were designed to be a republic, and that's still what we are. Voting is usually only democratic when it comes to legislation, but the results of those votes can be overturned by our Supreme Court if they feel the legislation isn't constitutional. As for the politics that go on - it's a dirty, dirty game. However, I was under the impression that politics is like that no matter what country you live in. | | | | | | |

| | I live in America, and I hate American politics. I hate PARTISAN politics. They spend so much time worrying about who is a Republican or who is a Democrat that nothing ever really seems to get done. I am sick of seeing it. With all the problems we have in our nation right now, we can't afford to worry about who is liberal or who is conservative. We all need to work together to solve our economic crisis. I think A LOT of people here in America are sick of American politics. I don't feel that we are truly a democracy. We can vote to express our opinions, but the politicians can still do what they want to do in regards to what actions or legislations are actually passed. The Supreme Court can pretty much LITERALLY re-write the Constitution or the laws from the bench as they see fit. It is a screwed up system to say the least, but I it is still better than the alternative of living in a Communist nation or a nation ruled by a dictator. I have a feeling that Obama is going to lead America into more of a Socialism-style government. I am hoping that isn't the case, but some of his statements so far are leading me to believe that this is truly what he is trying to do...I don't think there is really a true democratic nation anywhere in the world, nor do I believe that there will EVER be a true democracy... | | | | | | |

| | Well, I guess if you just read the few comments on here, you would have to say yes, America is a democracy. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and feels free to express it. Right now, I'm feeling optimistic as hell about my country but I'm a Democrat who voted for Barack Obama. I didn't feel so hopeful during the eight years of the Bush administration. LOL | | | | | | |

| | I cannot recall who said it originally, but somebody once said that in the US they have lots of democracy and not much politics and in Europe we have lots of politics and not much democracy. I think there is a lot to be said for that. Americans appear to have many more opportunities to exercise the franchise than Europeans but don't have quite the same variety of choices when it does come to a vote. In Europe we vote less often but have a spectrum of opinion to chose from. | | | | | | |
