Do you prefer to be alone or with others when feeling down? |
|
I know many persons would say that this is a rhetorical question and that it is always better to be with people as they will help you get over your depression. That is especially true if the persons you are with are extremely lively. However for me its often the peace and quiet that I like as I get to ponder over the problem until I find a handle or some kind of coping mechanism.Maybe it has to do with personality which borders on reclusive and insular at times but many times I cant take too many persons around me,at least not all the time.In additon to which when I am down, sometimes the persons around you may sink you into further depression by the things they say .
So how do you deal with depression based on the context of this discussion,

2. purplehyacinth (292) | 11 months ago | It depends.. If I am depressed and I want to relax or enjoy to temporarily forget that depression, I would hang out with my friends. If I know I cant help myself, I'd ask for my friends' help. But if I am depressed and I know I can get over it by myself, I'll be alone thinking things over..

3. DarthJustice (1360) | 11 months ago | Both, actually.
When I get depressed, the depression often makes me want to be alone. Unfortunately, I normally am anyway. But rationally, I want to be around people because that can help me feel better anyway a lot of the time. I'd at least like to have someone to talk to.

4. katsalot1 (875) | 11 months ago | I like to be alone, because hopefully I can work out the reason for the depression, and then work on finding an answer, or as you said getting a handle on it. Sometimes it's helpful to talk to people about something completely different - like their problems - without telling them about your own, to help you get your own worries into perspective.

ronnyb (2639) | 11 months ago | You made an interesting point that I hadnt consider and that is how talking to other about their problems migh make you see that yours are really nothing at all.But like I said I like to be alone to at least try to work out my problems first before asking for help

5. kerriannc (3233) | 11 months ago | Depends on the perspective of the person ronny. If this person is constantly negative then you will not want to have that person around you. I remember when things were going bad for me and there was a lady who always said to me 'Kerry seven times rise and seven times fall' I used to be upset at this. But now that I have come out of the depression I realized that this is the only way she could have help me and in reality there are times when you will rise and you will fall and it is not the fall that you fall but how you build back up.
So you see in every negative reply there is an answer it is just that you cannot see it that way at that time.
I prefer to talk about the things that I am going through being around person who will give me words of upliftment. I dislike negatives but I always replay in my mind what persons said to me and take out what I can use.

ronnyb (2639) | 11 months ago | A lovely answer Kerry .You have really put things in perspective.I too would be upset about this statement and it would take reall maturity to figure out that there is a positive to this statement.I suppose you are right too some people are just way to negative to have around, they just kill all the inspiration in you

6. palonghorn (3741) | 11 months ago | Since I mutil-task really well, I like being by myself. I normally start scrapbooking, and thinking about whatever the situation or problem is. As I scrapbook, I also come up with solutions to the problem, to the point that I can say ok I know what my next step is. I make notes as I go, scratch out things that don't solve the problem or won't help the situation. I don't mind being around people, but at times like that I would rather be alone.

7. lazeebee (4522) | 11 months ago | I prefer to be alone. Just as you said, it is the peace and quiet I crave, when I have a problem. I hate people around, asking me questions or offering thousand-and-one advice/opinions - the noise itself would drive me crazy.

8. juleself (110) | 11 months ago | I usually prefer to be alone when feeling depressed, but I've come to realize that it's better for me to be around people. And not in the sense of talking with people about your problems, but just being around people and interacting with them.
The last time I felt down was after being sick with a persistant cold for quite some time. I was off work anyway, so I buried myself at home and wallowed in my depression. But the moment I was back at work and had people around me to interact with, I started to feel better. I'm usually more of a loner and deal with problems on my own, but I do need human contact, even when I'm feeling down.

10. ryzach (1184) | 11 months ago | When I am down I am very grumpy and not pleasant to be around so for me it is best that I am alone when feeling down. Most times I am up and positive so I try not to get down. My family can recognize when I am down and they pretty much leave me alone which is best.
