well Obama is really having problems filling this position. This is his third one to withdrawal.
Gregg said he is withdrawing because "the president requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives", and "We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy".
So another one down. Who is Obama going to pick next and will that person actually stick with it until they get appointed?

I heard that Gregg was disqualified because he paid all his taxes on time :)
Seriously though, I'm glad Gregg went with his conscience on that one. It's hard to justify working for someone with such fundamental differences in ideology. He's needed where he is now.

He said the deal breaker was the stimulus plan and the fact that Obama is going to take over the 2010 census.

I don't know who he will choose, but he needs to do a bit more research on whoever before he talks to him.

I am happy that Judd Gregg withdrew. Senator Judd Gregg is a good fiscal conservative and the Senate Republicans need him back. I was floored when I heard Gregg was going to leave his seat to take this position. I have no clue who Obama will tag to be the new Sec of Commerce, but do we really need a dept. of commerce. With or without the dept. of commerce commerce will still exist, just like the dept. of agriculture. Is not government having a dept. of commerce an oxymoron since government does its best to destroy commerce?

yep it is an oxymoron. But then "moron" is starting to discribe a lot of what is going on in washington right now.

Hello Lilwonders,
I've been very critical of Judd Gregg's decision to accept. Today, I'm mighty proud of him for withdrawing! Contradictory ideologies don't work well together on policy initiatives. Gregg would have eventually been put in a position to have had to compromise his ethics, and I suspect the best interests of We The People.
Obama offered Gregg the Commerce seat. Then a couple of days later his cronies at the Congressional Black Caucus had a little too much WHINE and cheese and went wimpering to Daddy Warbucks (oops, I meant Daddy Taxbucks). Then Obama had the crass, brass ones to yank the Census oversight away from Gregg and pass the fraudulent voter count football right into Rahm's hands. What kind of a message did that send to Gregg and the world.
Personally, I think Gregg handled it like a real gentleman. If if were me, I would have held a press conference and told Obama to shove his job where the sun doesn't shine! This is but one more line drawn in the sand!

You know this would be funny if it wasn't soo sad. I mean come on....how hard is it to pick a cabinet? He had months to perpare before he was sworn in.

I know what you mean. I am glad he came to his senses and withdrew. Who do you think will be next up for it?

With their different views on policy and ethics, it is probably for the best. I must admit that it is not setting the best example for our new president. Honestly it makes you wonder about his decision making skills; it also gives cause to wonder about just how much thought he actually has put into his cabinet positions and what direction he wants our nation to go! Hopefully whomever he picks next will be a sound choice. Heaven knows we need some good, strong leaders in our government....now more than ever.

I am starting to think he is just putting names in a hat and picking the one out to decide who gets a cabinet seat.

Who was the second one for this position? I was only aware of Richardson having been chosen and then withdrawing. Anyway, I was really puzzled when President Obama chose Gregg to begin with and I have no idea why Gregg would have accepted. Is he trying to say he didn't know they had policy differences when he publicly accepted the appointment? I smell Karl Rove in this deal...lol!

I also missed the second one. Maybe Gregg at first wanted to believe there was going to be a real bipartisan spirit -- then learned that, no, everyone MUST be 100% on board.
