What is your reason for using cold water

I am a bit on the stingy side when it comes to wash clothes. I do not mean that I will not use bleach or that I will put less soap in the load, or try to overload the washing machine, but here it costs a bit to heat the water. So by washing the clothes in cold water rather then even use warm or hot water. So we find that the gas heating bill is a little lower -- not that much because in winter we have to heat the house, but we keep the thermostat down. Why pay for heating up all of Winnipeg?
So I was wondering what is the reason you wash your clothes in cold water, is it because it is cheaper in the long run or is it because you want to save the ecology?

I do it mainly to save money but it's also better for washing. Dirt comes out better in cold water and the only time hot water is best is when you're washing white things. I'd like to be noble and say I'm trying to be ecologically responsible, but it's just to save money and wash my clothes better!

Same here. And besides I do not like my colored things to run. I hate it when everything in the wash turns pink.

I remember when I let my son wash for the first time and his dad was coaching him. He told our son to use hot water-but mom uses cold-I said hot, it gets all the dirt out, now here put my underwear in there, too. LOL!! Hubby's undies were pink and so were his socks, bleach didn't help and I had to go to the store for new ones. We left a frustrated dad at home and the kids and I laughed about how grownups don't always know best.

That happened to me. I suppose since they were underwear, it was all right and I sort of like pink. Oh and you do not need hot water to run things. I got a good dress and I washed it in cold water and it still ran. I guess they forgot to put on the "dry clean" only label.

I always wash my colored clothes in cold water anyway top prevent bleeding of color. I prefer hot water for my whites. I never just used cold water though just to save on the heating bill, I'd have to admit that one.

Most of my clothes are colored and I will wash the white things in hot water, but most of them are permanent press and not pure cotton and I am a bit afraid of shrinkage. I use a bleach for colors and add it to the wash. It is that they get just as clean as if I washed in hot water (except for the white sheets, and those white shorts I had that are now too big for me.
)
Most of the reason was that years ago, when we washed clothes and my mother washed clothes, we had to be careful and often time only one of us could take a bath that night because we ran out of hot water. So really i do not need to wash in cold, it is just that what I went through having a bath in lukewarm water because we washed our clothes that helped in my decision.

I just don't feel comfortable if I don't wash my whites in hot water and all the sheets! Thanks for the best response on this one!

I use it to cut down costs, but I do still use hot to whites and bleach. I just feel it kills more germs.

I use cold water, but if there is a stain on one of my white things, and the cold water and bleach cannot get it out, I will soak it in hot water, but that is all.

I just finished doing laundry right now. I used hot water. When I use cold water, it is because the colors are dark and do better in cold water. I live in an apartment so the cost of using the washer and dryer will not affect me. The price of using electricity in our apartment is different. We saw on TV the other day that this woman who lives a few towns from us, her electricity went to over $1000 a month. Everyone is so shocked. The electricity in our town will be going up soon.

I have hardly any whites, that is cotton whites, most of them are permanent press and so we use cold water. $1000 a month seems rather high. Now you know where Obama is getting his money for the stimulus packages.

I actually started using cold water so I wouldn't have to wait for the hot water to do dishes or have a bath. It usually takes about 1/2 an hour for the water heater to warm up again after you run the washing machine or have a shower (it's old). I now do it to also lower the gas bill (ever so slightly, but every little bit helps).

We have a large tank, but when I was young, we had to wait until the water heated up to have a bath and then we all washed in hot water and used a wringer washer to boot. It was not until I got married, and not until we moved here and were able to get a good insulted water tank, that we did not have to worry. But with the price of electricity and gas, you have to save where you can and besides with cold water, the clothes do not fade as much, but really I should get some Zero as well.

I use cold water and a short wash cycle to wash my daily home clothes. With three of us in the house, there’s a nice pile every three or four days and I take them and put them for a short cycle wash in cold water with a little less soap. It certainly saves the electricity bill. For all our office and school clothes, hot water is a must with more soap, of course.
I also use cold/lukewarm water while washing the silk or any other delicate fabric where there is fear of the colour running and also for the woollens.

I've always used cold water for washing my clothes except for whites. They just don't come clean unless I wash them in warm water. Like you, it costs money to heat all that water up just to have it go down the drain a short time later. I don't use bleach or any other harsh chemicals on my clothes either.

I always use cold water on dark clothes, because I heard that the cold water helps to keep the colors from fading. Also, I don't want to run out of hot water. I have a front loading washer, which uses less water, but I still try to save the hot water out of habit, though I don't use as much as I used to with all the kids grown up and gone.

I am always afraid of the colors running and that was the first reason I used cold water, then I did not want a large heating bill. Of course it is moot when you do use hot water for a bath or shower, but the clothes do get clean in cold water anyway.

First of all what's cold?
I wash most clothes at 40C and uses a litle amound of washing powder since the water here is soft and the washing powder is more effective in soft water.
White I wash at 50 C. Once in a while I wash in higher temperatures esp. if someone is sick.
I mainly do this to save money.
I wash 3 load in a week (big machine) and it only uses 3 kWh in a week and about 150 liters of water - it's not that much I think.

I wash everything in cold water, plus I use half the amount of detergent recommended. Everything still comes out just as clean. I do this for several reasons. One, it saves me money. Two it saves our septic system because of all that detergent. And three, I like doing my little part in helping our planet by not loading it with soaps and not using too much energy.

Cold water is enough so I do not want to pay more for heat water. Also dark cloth fading easily in hot water.

I guess for both reasons. I have always used cold water to wash my clothes that is how I have washed clothes since I was about 8. Never had to worry about anything shrinking because of hot water and some clothes don't like hot water. I remember once I was visiting my mom and sister and we went to my sisters to do laundry and her boyfriend had hooked up the cold and hot wrong.. So I thought I was washing in cold but in fact it was hot. and it shrunk my clothes big time some where cold wash only line dry and they shrunk enough to fit my much smaller sister...which they were big on me to begin with and I had just gotten the outfits also. talk about mad I was. But I now check everything if it is someone else's washer. I also like the idea that it helps the ecology and is considered the green thing to do.

I have used COld water to wash in for years way before they holler about going green . Mostly your clothes get just as clean adn the colors dont fade or shrink like they do in hot water.
Also when ya llive in a place that has no runnng water and ya have to tote it from the well ya dont heat it up takes way to much time!

I wash the clothes with cold water because I think it maintains the clothes. Cold water is always preferable over hot in case of clothes as it maintains the quality of the clothes.

well, im in a tropical country, so the water that is running down the tap isnt exactly that cold.. haha..
But i can imagine the bills heating the water just to wash clothes. Its a waste of time and money. Although heated water kills more germs and have a healthier lifestyle, but heck, these germs dont kill humans!! =)
$ is the key here, haha

As a matter of fact it seems to me that clothes keep their color better, or at least longer when washed in cold water.
