I visited my childhood home today ... |
|
I've been waiting for ages for England to have Google Street View - and I often check, in the hope it's been upgraded. Well, today I was SO excited to find London has been done - and Leeds, where I was born and spent my early childhood. I was actually able to stand in front of my first home, and compare it with a photograph I have, which was taken 45 years ago. The house has barely changed. My Dad's plot across the road is a little more overgrown than when he was growing our spuds there - but the house, apart from no longer having a fence and gate, is pretty much as it was. It was a lovely nostalgic journey to be able to 'virtually' walk up and down that street again, as I last saw the house when I was six years old. I'm hoping they do Cornwall soon, as it's the only chance I'm going to have of walking the streets of Polperro (a dream of mine). Is YOUR home on Google Street View yet - or just on Google Earth? Technology is a wonderful thing ... and GSV is one of my very favourite innovations!

guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | I loved walking the streets of Paris too, Minnie - and I hope you'll soon be able to stand outside your home. I think it's so exciting. When Australia first came online, my son was wondering why his car wasn't parked in our driveway (our car was!), so he enjoyed checking out all the beach carparks and his friends' houses to see whether it was parked there. As yet, he hasn't found it!

3. cobrateacher (4223) | 9 months ago | How cool, Guybrush!
I tried to find the addresses of a couple of childhood homes when first read this, but without luck. I'm going to keep trying, though, because you've made me so curious!

guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | They are updating it all the time, and London was only put online a couple of days ago. Australia has had GSV for over a year now, and lots of the USA is done. You can also visit the streets of Paris and Rome. Keep trying - they'll get around to your neighbourhoods soon!

4. Opal26 (9894) | 9 months ago | Hey guybrush! How cool is that? I have never even thought to try to look for the first houses that I lived in! What an interesting idea! That must have been so much fun taking a virtual tour and seeing what has changed and what has stayed the same! I'll be for you it brought back lovely memories! I think I will check it out myself! I would like to thank you for the wonderful idea! I will let you know how I made out!

5. abbey19 (1738) | 9 months ago | It must have been exciting for you to be able to see your first home, and your Dad's plot across the road! Lovely memories! Technology is amasing! I was born in Scotland, and would love to see my old house - do you know if Scotland has GSV?

| |
|
|
guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | Hello Abbey - yes, they've started on Scotland, and Glasgow has been done, along with some of the surrounds. I just had a bit of a walk in the city - and it's brilliant! Do have a look - you'll really enjoy yourself. If you didn't live in Glasgow, I'm sure they'll be adding your town soon.

7. Piscesmoon (2884) | 9 months ago | That would have been so exciting, guybrush. I went looking for my childhood homes and schools but, although I found the right streets, the buildings weren't there. My first homes were pulled down and turned into blocks of apartments and, even my schools are now nonexistent. I do enjoy looking on Google Earth at my parents' home - the house I spent my teenage years in - and walking down to my local haunts. It is very comforting to be able to see my family home when I live over 1000 kilometres away and haven't been there in person for more than 20 years. I love Google Earth but, if my parents' area is anything to go by, the pictures are very outdated. GSV shows a pine tree in my parents front yard that was cut down over two years ago. I had a lovely wander around the town my children grew up in. It was lovely to see our house and walk up and down the streets. Parts of my current town are now in GSV but, my house is not. Like you, I can't wait for Cornwall. I have always felt an affinity with it and discovered that my mother's side of the family comes from there. My grandmother used to show me photos of different places, so-and-so's wedding and so-and-so's grave. I wish she was still alive so I could pick her brain about actual towns. My great grandfather used to tell my mother stories of the Spanish pirates pillaging their way along the coastline. I would simply love to see the area for myself.

guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | What a shame some of your old haunts are gone, Pisces! It would be lovely to 'visit' your parents' house, though - and walk those familiar streets and reminisce. My second childhood home in Darwin was destroyed in a cyclone, so although I can stand in the street, the houses are new and not familiar - but it's still nice to go back. Maybe they'll upload Cornwall soon, so we can both enjoy it from afar!

guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | You'd love it, James! I hope you can find some 'familiar' places to visit - it's a very strange feeling being able to revisit haunts from over 40 years ago - and especially when they haven't changed. (I look 45 years older, but the house doesn't - go figure - not fair!)

| 10. Brixham (44) | 9 months ago | I'd love to revisit Devon and Torbay. Haven't walked those streets since I returned to bury my grammum 30 years ago. Since they've only just done London and Leeds, it seems unlikely they'd have the West Country in view yet. Can you tell me exactly how I go about finding this new technology? I'm clueless... Thanks!
| |
| |
|
|
guybrush (3500) | 9 months ago | Hello Brixham - and thank you for responding. Here's the link for Google Street View - I hope it works. If it doesn't, just search for Google Street View and you'll easily find it.
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=UTF8&z=4&om=1&layer=c
All you need to do is type the required address into the search bar at the top, and the program will find it for you. If the little man on the left hand side of the map is yellow, that means Street View is available for that area and you just drag the man down on to the street you'd like to look at (after zooming down lower to see the names of the streets). If the little man is white (transparent), that means your area hasn't yet been loaded. Try London first in order to 'practice'! Enjoy!

| Brixham (44) | 9 months ago | Thank you for answering my question, guybrush! I had tried earlier to Google it after reading your discussion, but it seemed all I came up with were only websites about it. You've now given me what I needed to get going. I'm assuming it's similar to the virtual tours of Jerusalem that I occasionally walk through at Jerusalem.com? Can't wait to go "home" again, if only for a short visit!
