My cousin was telling me part of the reasons why her and her husband got full custody of her step daughter. Her mother was being abusive towards her. She actually covered the girls mouth with duct tape and was smacking her around. How I have JOKED with my kids about doing that to them, but I would never actually do it and they know it. How on earth could someone sit there and actually tape their child's mouth shut?

What a horrible way to punish a child. To slap them and have duct tape on their mouth so that they won't scream out, to me, is a form of torture. That mother should have been reported for child abuse. It is good that your cousin and her husband got full custody of the child. Now she doesn't have to go through what she did anymore.

My cousin said she is a completely different child now than when they got her for good.

OUCH. That could take skin off when removed. We joke about duct taping my niece to the wall, over active little thing that she can be. But knowing that someone would actually do it, not funny. Some people just shouldn't be parents.

That is sick. I used to joke about taping children's mouth shut when I worked at the daycare. Then I remembered something my dad once said to me when I was a child. He said that things that are acceptable today that weren't acceptable years ago usually started with a joke. It's an interesting concept. Not always can it be a bad thing, but it makes me stop and think about my jokes because I might not mean anything by it, but my child could grow up saying that and not really even joking, but just saying it because mommie always said it. And then her child might turn around and think 'well, my mommie always talked about it, maybe I should give it a try!' My children and I sure can waste a lot of scotch tape, by sitting around taping our mouths shut and trying to hum a tune or try to make our needs known without the ability to talk. Then we pull them away and marvel at our lip prints on the tape. Okay, so we are weird people that are easily amused at our house. But, yep, back on the subject. I'm glad that the father got custody in that case. That is totally sick!

Your dad is probably right on that one. Funny that you and your kid sit around taping each others mouths and making a game out of it. Completely different.

That is just crazy and wrong. I am so glad they got custody of that poor little girl. God only knows what else was going on in that household. It's a shame how many women have children, and then abuse and neglect them. If you don't want the child, or aren't mentally in the right mind to care for them, give them to someone who will give them the good life they deserve. There are so many people out there that want children, and can't have them. I couldn't imagine looking in a child's eyes, putting duct tape on their mouth, and slapping them around. That is just sick. She should be locked up.

What is wrong with these parents. How could you do that to any child. I would play around with my kids when there were doing there war crys while we chased each other around the house saying mommy is going to duct tape there mouth shut. I will NEVER say it agian hearing this. I am happy to hear that little girl is in a better home and safe now. I wish her the best of luck.

That is just wrong, I agree with the first person, it's disgusting! I am glad that they did get full custody because the mother should not have been doing that. Joking is one thing, and most of the time children know it's a joke, they know parents say that because they are annoyed, but when it's actually done? That's just WRONG! Appreciate the discussion!

I've put duct tape on my kid's mouths, but only joking around. They get out of it pretty quick! I wouldn't and couldn't do it seriously. The only thing I'd seriously like to do is get myself ear plugs, because there isn't a moment of the day or night where all 5 kids are totally silent!
