Who were you in high school? |
|
And are you still that person today?
In high school I was not the "popular" kid, nor was I a geek or nerd or any of that. Really I don't know if I had a "label". I guess you could say I was the manicly depressed chic desperately trying to fit in. I cared way too much about what everyone else said or thought about me. I was sure that they all talked about me behind my back, which I guess meant I thought I was more important than I was. And I was very suicidal but too afraid of pain to do it, thankfully.
I'm not that person anymore. I have much more self confidence with who I am. I have tried to develop more of a "if you don't like me too bad" attitude but I think I still care more than I should what others think or say. I am no longer suicidal. I don't really care if I fit in.
In high school I was the person that everyone knew they could count on to help them or be a shoulder if they needed one. I AM still that. I give my heart and soul to everyone. It can be draining but it can be rewarding as well. I love to help others and be there for others. I'm glad that hasn't changed about me.
So who were you in high school? The Jock, the bully, the bullied, the head cheerleader, the geek, who? Are you still that person today?

1. NuttyMomma (651) | 8 months ago | interesting discussion!!! i guess i am still the same in that i am still rebellious even though i am an adult and i know now that you have to conform somewhat. I too desperately tried to fit in and was insecure. i no longer feel the need to fit in and i am really comfortable in who i am so in that way i have changed. i was moody too, still am but i am amused when i run into people i went to high school with and they turned out to be no more special then me even though some of them walked around thinking they were "all that". I tell my 13 year old who is in middle school that most kids in middle school are insecure and everyone is trying to fit in. basically that is true and it helps her because she feels alone. growing up is hard.

2. highflyingxangel (9033) | 8 months ago | In highschool I definitely went out with friends more and did things with friends. However, I wasn't as confident in myself and wasn't as outgoing as I am now. Granted, I'm not that outgoing now, but I'm more willing to do some things and try new things now. I think college has taken me out of my shell a bit.
I still get down on my self some times but I realize that I am capable and confident and I'm really not such a bad person. I'm not as willing to trust people now though. I had a lot of bad experiences in highschool that made it rather difficult for me to allow a person in and allow a person to see the real me. I'm working on that but it is hard.

3. captainmorgan (560) | 8 months ago | Well in grade 7/8 I was the bullied I guess, but only within my "popular" group of friends, and only by 2 of the people, but it might as well have been all of them since no one did anything about it. After that things changed, that was just a phase for me and those 2 people who were bullying me. I hang out with the "popular" crowd, although I feel bad calling myself and my group of friends popular. I guess maybe the "party group" is a slightly better term to use. I am still in highschool now so I still am this person.

5. Buzzman007 (202) | 8 months ago | Well I quess trying to translate my highschools(countrys) politics to american. I guess I would be a geek. But in my highschool the "geeks" ruled the schoolyard numbers wise. Guess there like 2 girls 2 guys that where the "popupar". and the Jocks was basicly just Jocks. and 2-3 unclassified a "bit socially awkward" kids. basicly all loners. I also think there where smaler groups than what I known from you avarage am. highshool. Also jumping between groups happend all the time.

sisterjinx (937) | 8 months ago | Thanks for the look at other than "american school" life. It's interesting because it seems to me that, at least in your school, social groups didn't really matter too much. You were who you were and are who you are and that is that. Too bad that in high schools in America it can't be that way.

Buzzman007 (202) | 8 months ago | Yeah...but I´m not saying this don´t play a role, wherever it may be, and how the schoolsystemem even is constucted. And for what I can understand (taking the individual out of it) This plays a bigger role in a big school...but a smaller school it would play more of a role for a person "way out there"

6. katsmeow1213 (4915) | 8 months ago | You and I probably would have got along great. Actually what you described was me to a T, at least in middle school. My first few years in high school I became a little too desperate for attention, so began fabricating lies to get people to notice me. At one point I was dating someone famous, or related to someone famous... it was all stupid stuff. I lied once about being pregnant, then lied that I'd had a miscarriage, or perhaps an abortion.
Between 10th and 11th grade I actually did get pregnant and ended up changing schools. Once pregnant I didn't care so much what others thought of me anymore. Obviously I did get plenty of attention because it was plain as day that I was pregnant, and this was not the type of school that was used to seeing pregnant teens. I actually ended up dropping out because I hated that school and didn't even want to try to fit in anymore or even try to make friends. I made my friends outside of school at that point, and got involved in other things... not all of it was good.
Who am I today? I'm not entirely sure all the time. I still have depression, I still have the occasional suicidal thought. I've spent probably the last 8 years on a soul searching mission, but I still haven't quite figured anything out yet. I'm still learning new things everyday about myself, and sometimes it's a slap in the face, not realizing I was so self absorbed or so inconsiderate.

sisterjinx (937) | 8 months ago | Thanks for answering Kat. I really appreciate your sharing this with us. And though I didn't get pregnant in school, I can relate to the rest. It was a tough time but for me I think it made me stronger now.

8. CremeAndSugar (449) | 8 months ago | It was the sixties, and I guess I'd be classified as with the flower child group. I pretty much got along with everybody. Didn't stand out in a crowd one way or another. Mainly I couldn't wait to get out of school and not have to deal with the social b.s. there. A lot of my friends went to different schools.

9. lazeebee (4531) | 8 months ago | Hi Sisterjinx, very interesting topic - makes me think me of those years! I was one of those who seemed invisible - you would hardly notice me. I was too shy to make a sound; quiet, obedient and obliging. In one of the yearbooks, someone described me as 'can't say boo to a goose'. Nope, thankfully I'm no longer like that. Through my years of working and exposure to different people and industries, I've changed - more assertive, vocal and independent!
