Another politican in a scandel

What is it with these people. I am starting to think there is not an honest one left in either party. The wife of powerful Democratic congressman John Conyers, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee pleaded guilty Friday to accepting cash bribes in exchange for supporting a sludge contract with a Houston company. Monica Conyers is a city council member. She was caught taking cash bribes in exchange for her favorable vote for the Synagro contract. She took the money (twice) and voted in favor of it. She was elected in 2005. She has also involved in a disturbance at a Denver hotel while attending the Democratic National Convention with her husband. She also has been accused of threatening to shoot a mayoral staffer, and she publicly called Cockrel "Shrek". With her plea deal she could be sentenced to up to 5 years in jail. What it is with our politicans? We are clearly electing the wrong kind of people and in mass droves because these kinds of scandels are becoming common place. What do you think?

This doesn't surprise me at all, it is good that they discovered this action and she should spend time in jail (But, you know as well as I do that she won't spend one day in jail). The person that bribed her should also be charged, and they should make the jail sentence for both taking bribes, and offering bribes much stronger. If you knew that offering, or taking a bribe would put you in jail for 30 years then I am sure people would think twice about it. Now our system is set up so that neither person faces much jail time. I hope they throw the book at her.

Yeah I agree with you. It gets frustrating after a while , when you keep hearing about this sort of thing. But remember that as someone gets more power, they are more likely to abuse it. Power also tends to attract these types of people, the more honest folk also tend to be the ones that don't get a rush from wielding public power. So, it isn't random, the power which these types of political positions give a person, tend to attract the type of person that would abuse that power. Kind of like how poo attracts flies or money attracts greedy people. Unfortunately, these types of stories have the opposite effect to what they should have. If politicians are corrupt, then voters should turn out in droves to scutinize politicians more, get involved, and weed out the corrupt ones. Unfortunately, the opposite happens. That is, voter apathy. Power Corrupts...PowerPoint corrupts absolutely. Sorry..coldn't resit.

There are the skills that are required to get elected, and the skills that are required to do the job elected to. Unfortunately, there seems to be little or no overlap between these two skill sets.
