what are your plans? With the 4th being only a week away, my husband and I took the kids out today to buy some fireworks. In my family the tradition is to light fireworks at home and just enjoy the day. Here, the law allows for us to light them off every day through the 4th at specified times. So, when we got home, they all had to light off some of their firecrackers and once it got dark, we lit a few other things. The rest of our mini-arsenal will have to wait until the night of the 4th! I know that many people prefer to go watch a display than to light their own, but in my case, we prefer to make our own show after we have had a nice little cookout just with us. If anyone else happens to come over, they can watch the show too. So, what are you going to be doing this 4th of July?

In my city it's illegal to light your own fireworks (although that doesn't stop most people!) I'm lucky that my parents live just a couple blocks from the park where our local firemen set off the fireworks show. We can either walk to the park from there, or just sit in the backyard and enjoy the show. This has been a tradition since my parents moved there 35 years ago. We start the evening with a potluck and some yard games. It's mostly family, and a few friends. This year there will be 17 people.

I'll watch what I can from my house. My dogs are already freaking out with all the explosions around here and I won't leave them alone on the 4th. They sell some fireworks here, too, but the kind that don't explode--poppers, sparklers and such. Somehow, people get hold of the big ones and they light up the sky through August up till school starts.
