A True End Of An Era: Kodak Discontinues Kodachrome |
|
Many of my friends here have digital cameras. I'm one of the hold-outs and still use my Nikkormat EL-W camera I got way back in 1977...yes, it still works--talk about Nikon reliability! Also to be honest, I just plain don't have the funds to get a digital camera...my yearning is to get the more expensive line Nikon digital DSLR's
Back in 1976 I actually got my first 35mm film camera a Kalimar and quickly upgraded to my Nikon a year later. I also learned how to develop my own black and white film and prints and LOVED it...it gave me such a sense of control over my images as I could custom edit and print them---Photoshop just CAN'T hold a candle to what can be done like printing ones own photos as far as quality (contrast, "dodging", "burning") As far as color film I used Kodachrome slide film...this was the film of choice for us professionals...all those spectacular photos gracing the covers and inside magazines like National Geographic were taken on Kodachrome. The color "saturation" of Kodachrome couldn't be beat...I've noticed the color quality of digital photos and they just don't look the same.
From 1976 up til now I've still used Kodachrome film...I have 21,049 color slides in my collection--in fact any photo you see of mine posted here was from an original slide that I scanned to digitize. The color of my slides is as fresh and bright as the day I took it due to keeping my slides in archival conditions
People who grew up and use the digital world of photography have missed something...there was nothing, absolutely nothing like using black and white film, developing it oneself and print ones photos--and they have missed the Kodachrome world of photography as well. Do you realize too, that many of our movies, especially the classics like Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind where filmed on Kodachrome as well?
In recent days many of us have talked about the death and passing of two celebrities...Lets talk about another death...the death of film photography the way I knew and loved it--a real part of my life is gone now. Are any of you affected as much as I am about the discontinuation of Kodachrome? Is film going to be completely phased out?
RIP Kodachrome 1936 to 2009

1. GardenGerty (20110) | 5 months ago | It has been ages since I have used film, but I did listen sadly to the fact that Kodachrome is being discontinued. It does make one wonder if film is on its way out completely. That would be hard for some of you master craftspeople who still use it. I am sorry, but I suppose that it just does not sell enough to justify continuing to produce it.

2. MYKLJ999_VERSION_2 (2981) | 5 months ago | Kodachrome sales account for less than 1% of all Kodak still-film sales.
They are not discontinuing ALL film sales...they are only phasing out Kodachrome. Their other film lines (such as ektachrome) will still be produced.

pyewacket (11538) | 5 months ago | It's still not the same MYKL---one of the reasons Kodachrome was the slide film of choice was due to the "fine grain" features...the lower the ASA/ISO of the film, ike Kodachrome 25 and 64, the smaller the grain...uh, think of it as pixels..that meant one could enlarge a photo from that slide to gigantic size and the "grain" wouldn't be noticed..Kodachrome was also the choice slide for publishers of magazines

pyewacket (11538) | 5 months ago | PS--I have used other types of slide film and the color just isn't the same as Kodachrome

MYKLJ999_VERSION_2 (2981) | 5 months ago | Kodachrome is only one of many films that Kodak produces; at this time, there are no plans to totally stop producing film.

4. nanajanet (2653) | 5 months ago | I fear that film will eventually go the way of records, Beta tapes, and so on. If you look back at inventions at the beginning of the industrial age and how many things are just not used anymore, it is a given that film will be a memory, too.
Look at analog tv. It is not here anymore!! It is all digital. One thing that scares me is if we ever lost electricity, how could we all live? LOL
I remember dialing a phone, then push button came, and now I can just say a name and it dials. Soon it will be in my head and I will just think it!! LOL
Progress is good, but I think that when things go from our youth, we miss it as it is like losing a part of us, in a way like losing a pet or a loved one. It is part of the "fabric of our lives".

nanajanet (2653) | 5 months ago | Yeah, in the long run, it comes down to profit. If it is not profitable, it is not something that they want to cotinue, but some stuff is better, or at least more convenient. I, on the other hand, like to take many pictures but could not afford to develop the photo and many times it sat around never getting developed, or they would develop the entire roll and half of it was bad. I like being able to delete bad photos, but I am not a photographer, just an every day photo clicker. When we went to Italy last summer, between the four of us we took over eight thousand photos (we visited for a month). Some were doubles or similar shots but we took more than we normally could have and so have some wonderful shots that if we had only so many per roll, could not do. Film is costly, we were limited on what we could carry on the planes and having to carry all those rolls and develop them, for us would have been insane. Each night, when we got back to our apartment, I would put them on the laptop, we would view them and take out the bad ones. So, we actually took more than eight thousand, if I think about it. Plus we had the streaming video on the cameras. My cousin bought one for one hundred dollars that was three years newer than mine, a Kodak, and it took even better pictures than mine did.

Strongheart (1079) | 5 months ago | I just clicked on my picture so I could see it as you would and was very disappointed. It looks all grainy after mylot upload and resize. I wish there was a better way to show where the intense detail could be appreciated. I'm gonna try attaching it after I lod it to an online host and see if that is better.
http://i39.tinypic.com/kcxu36.jpg it's a little better but still not great.

Strongheart (1079) | 5 months ago | Well.......I feel like an old geezer. Specially whe I have to yell at them young pups to turn that music down cause I can't hear myself think! LOL I think Nana said it best above wheb she pointed out the things we like are those we grew up with and are part of the fabric of our lives.
I have no idea what films are available anymore to be honest. I switched over to digital in 2002 because I hated waiting for a photo lab and didn't have a facility of my own.
I have some awseome photos I took all over Europe and Africa that I have been waiting to get a new scanner to upload. My old one HP T45 Office allinone is now outdated even though I bought it in 2002, they no longer make the cartridges for it available at walmart and it won't work with anything newer than windows Millenium as microsoft ensured we would have to buy new when they phased out the old! I'll let you know when I get them scanned and uploaded to the Den!

6. cookiecrumbles (228) | 5 months ago | I love photography and that was the only kind of film I used for years. I had several cases of it. I will go out and buy what I can now that they will mark it all down. It is a good film. I have a Pentax K1000. It is a oldie but a goodie. Most colleges make students find this camera if they are in beginner photography.

7. bobmnu (2635) | 5 months ago | An interesting bit of news is that KODAK was one of the first to enter into the digital camera field. At first it was just for professionals with a 1 or 2 mp camera costing in the neighborhood of $20,000. In today's market they are a leader in consumer digital cameras and in in the extreme high end cameras.

9. mentalward (4193) | 5 months ago | Wow! I had no idea that Kodachrome is no longer! It is sad when things like this go by the wayside to make room for the newer, better, improved, blah blah blah.
However, I have had one very prominent problem most of my life. That was getting film developed. Having never even thought of developing it myself (also never having the funds to do it with) I've always relied on film developing companies. It seemed that I had some kind of brain fart when it came to getting film developed. I know I must still have at least 20 rolls of film that I never got developed around here somewhere!
When digital photography came out I was thrilled! I mean, I understand exactly what you are talking about because nothing can replace watching those photos appear from seemingly blank photopaper. I was an art major and had a friend in college who was a film major and would sometimes watch him while he developed his film. It was really cool, in my opinion, to see those photos appear as if by magic.
So, even though digital photography saved me from myself, it's still sad to think that film photography has died, or is about to die out completely. I just watched a show about movie making and they talked about digital versus film. It seems that most movie producers still want film around because, although digital is more versatile, analog is better in many ways.
