Tylenol may cause deaths |
|
Did you read this news story over at CNN about how over counter drugs like Tylenol and other acetaminophen containing drugs have been linked with numerous deaths?
Very scary! I use that stuff all the time for my migraines. Couldn't live without it.
They are thinking about taking Tylenol products off the shelves.

1. peavey (3646) | 5 months ago | Dr Mercola and several others have been saying that about Tylenol for quite awhile. I'm glad it finally made the news and I hope they do take it off the shelves... BUT most of the other pain killers are just as bad in one way or another. The safest way to handle pain is to use white willow bark and natural relaxing methods, but I don't know how well that would do for migraines. Maybe you could check out biofeedback?

2. jerzgirl (2684) | 5 months ago | They already know that over-consumption can cause liver damage. But, they're not saying if the cases are from over-consumption or from regular use. If this is from regular use, then they have some legitimate concerns. But, if it's because people don't follow the directions properly or don't keep them out of the reach of their children, then I think pulling them is premature. They don't work on me except as a back up to Advil if Advil isn't working. But, they've worked well for many people when properly taken. They need to be more clear in their statements rather than so generic that people begin to panic.

beautyqueen26 (9128) | 5 months ago | I'm only guessing here. But I figure they mean that liver damages could occur in situations where people accidentally overdose on acetaminophen/Tylenol like when they take regular Tylenol and then later take a sleep-aid that contains acetaminophen. Some people don't read labels well. So they could easily over dose from excess consumption. Or, combining a cold remedy (containing acetaminophen) with sleep-aid that also contains acetaminophen.
These meds build up in the blood.
It's a scary situation.
And so easily done.
Another danger is mixing acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
They used to say that could cause liver damage.
Or, drinking and taking otc drugs; that poses another danger to the liver.
These are some of the things I've heard over the years from other medical news sources.

razcal2267 (9477) | 5 months ago | The problem is not occurring with normal use of any medication with acetaminophen. It is happening with over-consumption and people are mixing medications without regard to why the warning labels should be read.

pyewacket (11507) | 5 months ago | It's not necessarily true that people who take the recommended dosages of Tylenol won't be affected. There was a story just last night how a woman took the recommended dosage of Tylenol for her migraines for ten years and next thing you know she had to have a liver transplant. What people don't realize is that all medications can accumulate in the system

|
razcal2267 (9477) | 5 months ago | pye if they are that stupid then they shouldnt be taking anything at all.
| |
|
|
beautyqueen26 (9128) | 5 months ago | Thanks PYE, I heard about that story too. Turns out, just two caplets of Tylenol more than you need can cause liver damage.
But what if the recommended dosage is too high as listed on the bottle?
Makes me wonder what is too much.

beautyqueen26 (9128) | 5 months ago | Accidentally over dosing on any med is a scary situation.
When I was a kid, I accidentally over dosed on Children's Tylenol and another med.
I was self dosing, cause I was home from school. And, being only ten, didn't realize that I wasn't supposed to combine the two meds and ended up with a super weird allergic reaction.
My face went numb and my lip was swollen up three times normal size.
| |
|
|
Ricki911 (1093) | 5 months ago | They should have a lower dose so in case of situations such as yours. I always wondered why they offered such a big bottle when these incidents happen more and more. Why not offer one or two x the dose. If the patient needs more then they should have to get a prescription. But the companies only look at sales not the risk it brings to the consumers.
| |
|
|
beautyqueen26 (9128) | 5 months ago | You're right about that. And, every case is unique.
Most people don't know that acetaminophen builds up in the blood, so risk of over dose is high.
Years ago, I heard that this type of meds can take up to three days in the blood stream before it becomes fully effective.
So if you think you're going to have a headache sometime later this week, better take Tylenol now.
Of course, noone does that.
But I'm just saying that Tylenol is slow burn and takes so long to work it might make someone think it's not working.
As for me, I get really bad migraines and it takes up to six hours or more for two Tylenol caplets to work and often I feel as if I should take more.
I've always tried to be careful with otc meds, but accidents do happen.

6. Shaun72 (11876) | 5 months ago | Thanks for sending this report. I don't take a lot of Tylenol. I do take a lot of Goody's and BC Powders which I'm not sure if they have acetaminopen in them or not.
| |
| |
|
|
GardenGerty (19874) | 5 months ago | Hey, Shaun, I did some research for you. Goody's Powders has acetaminophen in it, which is what Tylenol is. BC Powders does not, it has a salicylamide, which is like an aspirin. Both powders contain aspirin and caffeine as well. These three ingredients: Aspirin, caffeine, and acetaminophen combined are very good at relieving pain, but each has its side effects and you risk liver and kidney and stomach problems or damage from them.
| |
|
|
Shaun72 (11876) | 5 months ago | Thank you very much for this warning. I will just get BC Powders then. I have to be careful already from a shot that I take from having Multipls Sclrois it can cause Liver damage also. I get my liver checked with blood work about every three months. So far I have been alright but it still worries me.

7. williamjisir (12735) | 5 months ago | Hello beauty queen. I also take capsules contained Tylenol for cold and migraine. This is the only capsule that helps with my migraine when it happens. I am wondering whether they have healthy ingredients for the medicine of this kind so that we won't have to suffer from its side effects. Thank you so much for the information, my dear beauty queen. Take care.

8. AmbiePam (15002) | 5 months ago | It seems like every medicine in the world is being scrutinized. I've heard of people dying recently with their deaths linked to Tylenol, but it has always been because they took too much. I am thinking of one girl in particular who went to Oklahoma University. She wasn't feeling well, so she took Tylenol. And took it, and took it...She took way more than the directions told people to take. And she died. It was so sad too. She wasn't from Oklahoma, so her parents had to fly down here and pick up her body.

9. GardenGerty (19874) | 5 months ago | I have had medically related training and medical type jobs, so I am aware of this problem. Most people are not. Most people do not read labels and think of the ingredients in the products they take.I still prefer aspirin to acetaminophen. I was told that if you OD on Tylenol there really is not a good antidote. We have way too many drugs available over the counter and too many people who do not read, do not believe and do not understand the potential for harm of over the counter meds.

10. incredibleDNA (1085) | 5 months ago | Yes, i have read some posts saying that Tylenol may cause death. Many consumers believe that taking over the counter drugs is safe as long as it's recommended by physicians. But the truth is, even a small dose of acetaminophen can put patients at risks for severe liver damage, a liver transplant and even death. The said compound acetaminophen is found in many over the counter drugs as well as numerous prescription drugs though you can protect yourself by using only one drug with that compound at a time, avoid pain relievers when you are puking or in fasting, and the most important is don't take drugs with any other liquids than water.
