Tylenol may cause deaths |
|
Did you read this news story over at CNN about how over counter drugs like Tylenol and other acetaminophen containing drugs have been linked with numerous deaths?
Very scary! I use that stuff all the time for my migraines. Couldn't live without it.
They are thinking about taking Tylenol products off the shelves.

I remember reading couple of years ago that once accidentally one consignment of Tylenol got laced with potassium cyanide and Johnson & Johnson without taking any chance recalled the entire lot of Tylenol thereby taking a hit to the tune couple of million dollars . It was a classic example of rapid service recovery . Now seeing this news .....just makes me wonder

13. Binthu (2957) | 6 months ago | Hi Beautyqueen,
I liked your name.
You have given the good information to our mylotters, but we will discuss in details about reality.
Generally " Tylenol " IS A WELL BRANDED trade name and contains the chemical active ingredients is called Acetaminophen. It's pharmacological actions are mild antipyretic ie to treat the mild fever as well as the mild pain like headache.
When you have noticed this CNN news very closely they are advising to the FDA to control or banned the " Tylenol Extra Strength ( combination of acetaminophen + Psychotropic substances ) and NOT Tylenol, again they are informed Tylenol also to be removed from the counter of the Pharmacy due to its liver damages.
Tylenol will not produce any side effects, if you going to use with correct doses, but at the same time if you are going to use with more doses then sure it will gives the side effects of liver damages. Generally this over dosage's side effects not only for Tylenol but also for all types of medicines. So we have to use any medicines with prescribed dosages and MUST NOT used OVER DOSAGES.
Basically all the medical professional like Doctors and pharmacist always recommended to their patients to take the the correct dosages of medicines along with more information including the side effects .
Tylenol also one of the counter medicines and has been selling to many millions of peoples in the world for the treatment of mild fever as well as mild headache.
This all information not only for the tylenol but also for all other branded products contains acetaminophen .
So I am strongly advising to the public " use the correct dosages of any medicines with the help and guide of your physician and pharmacist", then no need for the any recommendation to remove or banned any medicines, unless to prove that any medicines will gives life threatening side effects on the small dosages .
Hope your understanding on the issue of CNN news about Tylenol.
Have a NICE DAY.
Best of luck.

14. razcal2267 (9491) | 6 months ago | It isn't that Tylenol isn't safe, its that many use it in an unsafe way. I say leave Tylenol on the shelves. If people are STUPID enough to mix medications when it clearly says not to then hell let them die.

pyewacket (11587) | 6 months ago | Mmmm...I don't necessarily agree there. If people use something like Tylenol on a very regular basis AND the recommended dosages, it can still accumulate in the system--all medications do that whether prescribed or OTC--for instance if one takes an antibiotic for the seven to fourteen days, did you know it can take several days to a full week to be out of one's system???

Eskimo (1723) | 6 months ago | Raz, I do use paracetamol (u.k. name for Tylenol), and it is safe in small doses for most people unless they have liver disease. I agree though, that people should read the contents label before buying medicine. It is put in a lot of different cold or flu medicines so accidental overdosage is possible.

razcal2267 (9491) | 6 months ago | I still say that if people dont read the warnings percautions on any medication and expecally if they have medical issues and or are taking more then one thing they if they die from stupidity it is on them not the companies and there is no reason to take any of the medications off the shelf.

16. pyewacket (11587) | 6 months ago | I've been hearing about this. I've never used Tylenol a day in my life. Also, the different times I've had a cold or something even pass up the cold remedies as they have acetaminophen in it as well. Did you know the prescription medication oxydone has acetaminophen in it too? What people might be doing is taking a combo of these medications not realizing they are taking more than they should

17. JoyfulOne (4240) | 6 months ago | I read about that too. Very interesting. And I find it especially scary since I'm an older person and my rheumatologist has had me on mega doses of it for the past few years. (By mega doses I mean 600 mg every four to six hours, along with something so I don't get ulcers from it.) Tylenol has been around for at least since the 70's (or maybe even the 60's), you would have thought they would have noticed a lot more problems before now and the FDA would have done something earlier. It'll be interesting to see whether they ban it in the future or what they will do.

18. Eskimo (1723) | 6 months ago | In the U.K. it is called paracetamol, and there have been a number of deaths from it because an overdose can cause severe liver damage, occasionaly complete destruction of the liver. However if taken in the correct doseage is a very effective analgesic/pain killer.
There have been suggestions about adding an antidote to paracetamol poisoning, but so far this has not been done. Instead the amount you can buy over the counter has been restricted to 16 tablets at a time. (That wouldn't stop someone from going around a number of stores and buying lots).
The main problem is that it is contained in so many different medicines especially cold/flu treatments that it is possible to accidentally overdose by taking a number of different medicines at the same time.

19. zed_k4 (4418) | 6 months ago | I have always adhered to the saying that 'too much of something is bad enough'. If there's a need to, everything should be taken at a minimal. If in a severe migraine case, just a pill would ebb the pain away. Sometimes, I don't have the time to go to a doctor unless it's really throbbing mad. On some days that I have minor pain, I just avoid painkillers of any kind totally. I think it's more safer in a way. Thanks for sharing this...
