Do you wear seat belt when you are in the car? Helmet when on motorcycle?

Malaysia has made it obligatory for all passengers to wear
seat belts when in the car. If it was caught, the driver and
passengers will be compounded. If it was caught 2nd time, the
compound will be RM2000.00

For the motorbikes, the rider and pillion rider has to wear
helmet at all time. But when riding in the villages or estate
road, many ignore the laws.

How is the situation in your country? Perhaps you can share
what will be the actions taken or any experiences pertaining
to this. It is aboslutely dangerous for not wearing seat belts.
It can save lives... will share some stories at the comments later!

i dont have a car. but i will rarely use the helmet while i travel in the bike.. it have some demerits such as load in head that causes pain in neck, cant hear the external voice properly.also it leads to the loss of hair..so i use it if i go for a long trip to cover me from rain or hot sun and dust..

Yes, there are quite a number of disadvantages of
using a helmet..I do agree with you ..but you need
to wear and to buckle it for your own safety:)

Hi Iriene88,

Nice to see you again in a great discussion. In my country, most of the places the government has put some rules to wear helmet and seat belts. But its not strict in some places.

In my area, it was strict a few months back but now lol most of them wihtout helmets and seat belts. Inside the city due to heavy traffic and slow moving and very hot most of the time, people don't likely to be wearing helmets. I wear a helment when I go to office as I will be going in shifts because that time there won't be any traffic and I have to travel atleast 20 kms in my bike so due to a fast and safety ride I use helmet. I too met an accident during the night and would be hurt I was not wearing the helmet that time... happy That was a lucky time indeed.. Have a nice day...Cheers thumbup

You are lucky, escaped unhurt! Do wear and buckle your helmet.
It is for your own safety..think of your love ones. happy

In Malaysia, many youngster who ride on motorcycle in smaller
streets do not wear their helmet. Sometimes they wear the helmet
but they do not buckle it. So, on the national television..
always have this advertisement advising and reminding those riders
to buckle the helmet. They also recommend that for children, they
should use children helmets with the right size for their head, this
is to optimize protection.

If im being completely honest i rearely wear a seatbelt in the car, for the main reason that its uncomfortable, bit of a silly reason i know considering its there for safety but i hate the way it digs into me and cuts across my chest it really annoys me.

In the UK you can get a £60 fine and 3 points on your drivers license as a penalty for not wearing one.

I do agree with you, this seat belt is really make us uncomfortable!
Especially when I wore certain materials blouses, it really leaving
a painful mark on my chest! cry

No matter what.. SAFETY FIRST...like it or not, it is advisable to
wear our seat belt once we are in a moving cars. In Malaysia, if we are
caught not wearing seatbelt, we will be fine RM300.00 (1 pound= 5.6 RM)
and certain number of points will be deducted!

The govt. has made it mandatory wearing of seat belts for behind passengers since January this year. Safety comes first. So why can't we wear seat belts for safety sake in cars and crash helmets for motor bikes? Why do we have to wait until the authority imposes the regulation on us? Safety belts/crash helmets do save lives. If you love your family please ensure that you and you family are belted up or are buckled.

There are many cases in an accidents, the passengers with belt on manage to survive. So, this mandatory regulations is for the safety of the driver & passengers. Here it is the law to wear seat belt when you are in the car and wear helmet when you are on the motorcycle. In my city, motorcycle is not allowed to use any more. I think it is a good law to force people to wear seat belts. At least it is safer. You can't know what the accidents will happen.

May I know which city is it? The motorbikes are not allowed in
the city - is it for safety reason?
I remembered the last trip to Shanghai, China in October 2007..
there are many mopeds (motor-pedal: something like bicycle plus
motorbike, very special)..there are many in the city of Shanghai
and it is very economical...does the riders of this vehicle need
to wear a helmet?

I truly agree with you that it is good that the Government is
enforcing the law for everyone in the car to wear seatbelts. It
is for the safety ...so FOLLOW THE LAW:)

Hi Iriene, here it is the law for everyone to wear a seatbelt in the car which I always do anyway. Lots of Greeks though perceive this as being told to do something so it doesn't go down well so they usually only put them on where they think there may be a police presence as it is an instant fine, then take them off again when in the clear. Considering the incompetence of most of the road users here and the number of accidents every day this is nothing short of sheer stupidity. The helmet thing does not go down well either but there has been a marked increase in the last few years of people actually wearing them rather than driving round with the helmets on their arms as they were more likely to do a few years ago, but again this is because of the sharp increase in the fine for not wearing them. Even though just from our village two young men have had serious injuries in the last month from motorbike accidents it does not influence others to wear the helmets, they take the attitude that the helmet would not have prevented the loss of a limb. sad

Dear thea09,

It seems this happen everywhere in the world.
People seems to ignore the importance of safety
seat belts and helmets. Even the law have it mandatory, and
enforce it...there are still people who just do not bother!

There was one accident that happened in Malaysia many years ago,
the behind passenger car door suddenly open as the driver make a
fast turn...the maid was carrying a baby in her arm..due to the
impact, the baby was thrown out from the car and it was fatal...
So, it is advisable to have child car seat fixed/ fasten securely
to the seat. But it is not mandatory here.

Fasten the seat belt or buckle the helmet - SAFETY FIRST!

Hi Irine,

I always wear helmet when I ride a motorcycle. It is a some sort of spontaneous action to look for a helmet whenever I want to go out using a motorcycle.

In a car, on the other hand, I rarely use seat belt. I only use it if I saw a policeman doing a road block rasp . And I never use seat belt when I sit at the back.

It is a good habit to automatically wearing and buckled
your helmet when you are riding a motorcycle thumbup

It is advisable to fasten your seatbelt while you are sitting
infront...it is for your own safety! The impact is stronger on
front seat passenger and driver if accidents happens. Anyway,
after much research on accidents and its impact...the authority
has decided to implement and enforce for the passengers on behind
seats to wear seat belt also...I believe there must be some reliable
statistic to it....hmm..so the decision is yours!

thumbup Good morning, Iriene. Yes, in the US it is a law that everyone must wear seat belts. If caught doing so, one must pay a fine to the courts. Each time you are caught not wearing a seat belt, the fine increases in amount. Children must also be in special car seats until they are a certain height and weight, or one is fined.

As for motor cycles, each of our 50 states can make their own law on that. Some require helmets; some do not. But statistics show that many lives are saved by using seat belts, car seats for children, and wearing a helmet when on a motor cycle.

Just wanted to make a quick correction, seatbelts, like motorcycle helmets, are not a national law, this is also a state thing, New Hampshire has no manditory seatbelt requirement for those over 18 (yay! my state!)

Dear Karen & xfahctor, I never knew that in the USA, the different states can make their own law on wearing seat belts & helmets . Even though wearing helmets and seat belts are quite annoying at times..but we must always put SAFETY as our main priority. It will save our lives and save being fine/ summon too!!
