Christians believe that there is a God who watches their every action and thoughts. That belief make them stay away from lies, stealing and forgery. Do you think non-believers of God like Atheist, who claims they can achieve 'good' by themselves, can be honest as compared to believers in God?

I am a Christian and I would say, on the whole that yes, Christians will try to be honest if they are trying to live by theirfaith. But sadly, there are those who are not, and sometimes I look at people outside the church and think we could learn a lot instead of judging. One of my dearest friends is an atheist but he is the most caring, honest and authentic person I know.

Christians frequently violate their own moral code. We are all humans, and are therefore all fallible creatures. Atheists are just as moral or immoral as Christians.

If the eye of some sort of god focused on you is all that is keeping you honest than you are saying by inference that you are by nature dishonest.

if you're saying that we are bound to be dishonest if there is no God watching us...that could be true since the world is full of temptations, greed and selfish desires. i just want to know your opinion if there could be a comparison among believers and non-believers when it comes to honesty.

I don't think it makes a difference if you believe in God or not. You still have values of some sort nor matter if you follow a specific faith or no faith at all. And if you are Athiest (wich I am for the most part) it doesn't mean you are not an honest person. Someone over last christmas lost their gift card to a diff store in one of our shopping carts. I turned it in, even though I could of used that $250 it was still the right thing to do. And you know what... There was a man I worked with one time and he preached bout the bible ect all the time. I was a lil annoyed with his behavior because you leave your faith as well as other aspects of home life at home. But you know this man I caught him stealing shoes! As a new style of shoes he was wearing (& you knew everyones sizes) was suddenly on clearance & he wasn't wearing them anymore. Later was told after he was let go for stealing at the store he was transfered to and all this guy would say was "God...." clearly he wasn't practicing his faith or what he preached.

thanks 3snugglebunnies. i agree there are many believers who don't practice what they preach. some would use religion for profit. some for social purposes or just to say they have a religion. even in the bible, it is also stated we should be warned that some people would use the name of God but don't practice what they preach.

That's an interesting question. I am not religious but for me, God is within me, as Jesus said, so my own standards are God's standards, because we are one and the same. I am not trying to say that I am perfect and always live up to God's standards, I just mean that I am aware that God is my true nature. So, to answer your question, I think some people who claim to be atheists do still have personal standards, and maybe believe in God without realising they do. I don't know if that makes any sense to you, but my views on spiritual matters never come out simple! xx

Sorry, I just wanted to add something. It equally follows that there are people who claim to be Christians and go to church etc., but who can't REALLY believe in God because they behave immorally and merely try to cover up their actions so other people don't find out. There are plenty of those kind of people also, just look at child abuse in the Catholic Church. The abusers obviously don't believe that God is watching them.
