What is eating in moderation?  | | I have been going to Weight watchers and have lost over 40 pounds.
I go to visit Mom who is upset because I don't eat a some food she cooks. She tells me I should learn to eat everything in 'moderation'. What is moderation?
Tonight I did some research and found this on a website "For a consumer who eats a burger a week, the calorie difference translates to about 5 1/2 pounds a year." I don't consider going out to eat a burger once a week excessive but not if you had in the fries...whoa..that is a lot of weight a year. Most people eat fast food more than once a week.
At the same site, " A Grande Latte (260 calories) and slice of crumb cake (670 calories) from Starbucks may sound like a quick snack, but it's loaded with 930 calories. Snack on it once a week and you'll pack on nearly 14 pounds in a year."

So this snack once a week and a burger once a week can add 20 pounds to us in a year. Big Ouch!! .
After 5 years...the average Joe smoe can gain 100 pounds.
Am I too dumb for this concept...maybe but this same article said that the average dietician underestimated restaurant meal calories by 37% and fat by 49%. Now I don't feel so bad
I started a discussion about Fried butter and people told me about eating in moderation.
How do you define moderation? DId you know that the average holiday dinner (Christmas, Thanksgiving) is about 5000 to 6,000 calories or about 2 pounds.
Do you eat in moderation? Please define it? I would really like to get an understanding of how people can stay skinny while eating out on a regular basis? Do you eat everything in moderation? WHat is your eating plan?

You should talk to your mother about the importance of eating what you should now, and nothing else. You don´t say what she had made for you, but is she likes to cook,I´m sure she can get some wonderful diet recipes to give you. Decades ago, I remember I saw a commercial in a woman´s magazine. I still remember it. It said; "Don´t blame it on the potato". The were two pictures: one on a single cooked potato and how many calories it had and another with one of those wonderful potatoes with butter andsour cream over it. The potato itself was nothing. Have you tried snacks of those breads with coarse seeds? I put a little bit of olive oil instead of butter and lettuce. YUMMY!!! And it´s black coffee, dear, no sugar. Or a good tea with some lemon juice. Very european! I´m dieting because I put on 20 pounds after I quit smoking. I already shed off 8 and I´m very proud. I don´t count calories as mine is not a case of being overweight. But I need my old clothes back So I eat light 6 days a week, nothing fried. Cooked in water, steamed or baked. The seventh day I EAT AND DRINK. I mean, if I have a party, I don´t care. But I come home and don´t eat much for the rest of the day. I can´t, I´m not hungry. Luck with your weight loss. You´ll do it!

We would spend so much time, and make so much food, and I would be so overwhelmed, I would eat almost nothing. When the grownups would nap, we kids would go play or as we got to be teens, we would walk. I had a hundred sixty acres to walk off the meal. We would not eat supper, but would generally have dessert in the afternoon. I am that way more or less to this day about large meals. It is the everyday things, especially the comfort foods I cook that will do me in. I can eat and eat. I made oven fried chicken today, with skin on. I never make that, had never used this recipe, but I found it, and used it, and it was very good. I did only eat breakfast, and lunch as meals, however. I had banana and granola bar before an hour walk. I had icecream with dry cheerios, but no supper.That is what happens when I have a day off. On the other hand, I had no desire to eat out today.

ShepherdSpy (2489) | 4 months ago | I've never followed a strict diet,but at the same time,I've never become obese,though presently I could sure do with losing a few pounds...In my case,it's probably as a result of insufficient exercise,(and a fondness for snacking...!) Many of us underestimate how much food we consider a portion..a portion of meat is rated as being the size of the palm of your hand..and so on.One recommendation I'd give would be cut out the sugary sodas and drink more water..that'd be a good start!

Some people will eat everything on their plate because that is what we were taught when we were little. Not to let things go to waste because of people who do not have food to eat. You know the guilt thing. Or it tastes so good you just have to eat the whole thing. I dont think that what you eat has anything to do with moderation. I think that it is the amount that you eat. I need to eat in moderation more. Thanks for reminding me.

Everything has been supersized for so long (because we love a bargain that we no longer know what moderate is. The weightwatcher meals are measured for moderation. You are eating less food because that is all that is needed to sustain your body at your desired weight.
Athletes eat a lot of food while they are active in sports. They gain weight when they stop playing because they do not slow down on the eating. They continue to eat as if they were carrying that football down the field.
Moms contribute to our weight problems because they want to be loved and who doesn't love Mom's cooking? They force it on us because they need validaton for themseves.

You can look at serving sizes on labels of products - that may give you a guideline. Eating out is always going to be harder, especially here in America where the portions truly are bigger than elsewhere and we're supersizing everything!
But it IS possible to eat moderately while eating out - because I havehad to work it out with my diabetes, I have found that on pretty much any menu you can find,or adapt something to a healthy option.
By the way, a 12oz latte made with skim milk is 100 cals (obviously if you add flavor it adds) And because the milk is steamed the consistency is no different so you can't really tell the difference from a regular. I was a barista for three years or so and my friend and I there worked out what we could have!

Its an interactive site designed to help you find the correct portions, serving sizes, and a ton of other information. You can chose to enter in your age, gender, and weight to get really detailed report of exactly how many servings you need, examples of what a serving size is, how many calories you personally need in a day, etc. its a really great site and its helped me a lot!

I feel difficult to understand these kind of things. my principal is very simple: eat less adn exercise more. I also have one personal secret. I'm trying eat nothing after 5pm. So i can keep my shape. it really works to me. I can see my weight is down slowly but never stops. Compared to what you got it's too simple. I'm really jealous of that. If i can lose 40 pounds it would be fantastic. I would not worry about my weight any more.

Eating in moderation is a complicated theory. But the good news is thats it's easy to understand. Eating in Moderation is to keep balance of the in and the out/burn. So in your case, if you do happen to eat a extra burger over the weekend, dont take the bus to the fastfood, walk there, you'll make your moderation there...
In other words, balance out what you consume and what you burn. Nutritionist would try to say this in a way that one must try to eat per day as he/she can burn but we know thats kinda hard. you cant daily exercise, or if u r ona diet, then there are parties. so to make things easier one can take average the food intake and energy burn per week or per month or even per year, it just have to work out.
in your calculations up there, in the 5 year period, u missed alot of other possibilities. those are whenu r sick or just dont want to eat and so on..
What i do is just watch myself. if im going bigger, i take control and eat a little lesser or a less calory diet. i can alwys hit the fastfood on the weekend cuz i know im balancing it out on the weekdays.
at the end, theres no hard and fast rule, just watch how your body responds.
