Who's That?  

My husband and I play a different variation with our girls. We play "Name that song". They have to guess the titles of the songs being played. Since our youngest is 6 and doesn't know as much music as the older three I have to lay for her. It often surprises me how hard I have to try just to get a win in. The songs are usually 70's and 80's rock and still my girls know just as many titles as I do! We play for prizes...money, candy, no chores, and so on. It really makes long trips fun.

We play this game too, but my oldest is not even 10 yet. They think I still know every thing. My son says, "You have heard every song!" He flips through radio stations and asks me all the time now if I know who this is or do I know the words. I can stump everyone in the family, even Papa who happens to be a singer and is very knowledgeable about music. It is a favorite game on trips and while doing house work.

I do sometimes, but I am even more surprised by the artists that they DO know. Which pleases me immensely...

I adore Rod Stewart. My kids new my music because they had too. It was a complete reversal My children would complain to their father that I would play the same song repeatedly and it would drive them crazy. They also complained that I played th music TOO LOUD! I love music and dancing and still dance when I hear something from way back when. No, I do not know he music they like now - do not appreciate it so there is a generation gap here.

I've tried to expose my girls to all types of music and I can't think of a time that I've stopped them from listening to anything. I know some lyrics aren't always appropriate (or even age appropriate) but they have always understood what language is ok to repeat and what is not. If they were truly interested in something, I let them listen. I love all types of music and I've been thrilled with their appreciation of music in general. My younger (who is almost 16) has played clarinet, flute and is now playing sax. She will listen to soundtracks (loves the Harry Potter music), classical (which I just know nothing about but she does LOL) and then switch just as quickly to 80's music, soft rock, current day pop or country. I'm glad to see the openness to all the genres :) One thing I'll never forget, though, is her first day of kindergarten. She came home TOTALLY disgusted ... I asked what was wrong and it turned out that some of the kids had been singing songs on the playground at recess. My kid, in all of her five years, was highly upset that "NO ONE knows who Fleetwood Mac is, Mommy!!!"

i have played this with my cousins but i listen to not very mainstream music so they dont care at really :P

I don't play that game with my kids but rather w/ hubby. He likes to try to stump me on 80's music. I have to know either the title, artist or words. It blows him away how much I know and I'm 6yrs his junior & I was more into grunge & some techno when I was a teenager + pop of course.

it's very funny because even my friend the other day was not even aware that MJ has passed on.its usual for people to ignore what does not interest them. so your son is no an exception.

I know a lot of those artists, but I prefer the much older ones from the 1900s to the 1970s. When I was little, Mom used to have me play "name that tune" with her friends who actually grew up with the music of the 50s, and I'd beat their brains out every time.

Now my husband and I enjoy a lot of music from Croatia, Serbia, and Russia. There are some local radio shows here in Ontario Canada that play that stuff, and we've gotten to know quite a few songsm, to the point where we can play Name That Tune with that, just as we can with the old rock and roll songs.

I can't even name half of the new ones. I can name the old ones way easier. The new ones I have to be told who they are. We don't play this game but it does sound like fun..
