92 and Not Out

Vera Lynn is an iconic singer in the UK and recently turned 92. She became famous during WW2 singing schmatlzy, sentimental songs that were evocative of home to Allied troops serving at the front. She is again in the charts at No 1 over 60 years later. Perhaps this is because as a nation we are again feeling battered and in need of some TLC. I really do not know - but it is amazing that songs that our parents and grandparents went to war to are still riding high in the charts. If you don't know what I am talking about here is possibly her most famous song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdGX_FcvVoE Is the World in need of some loving care again? Are old songs making a comeback where you live?

Coming on the ferry then? LOL. Unless you mean a cloud above them. I'll be the one with the harp with the broken strings.

I listen to the BBC World Service every night. Can't sleep unless I've listened to the BBC for a few hours first, to hear what is going on in the world. I am a big fan of Vera Lynn, and i think that it is absolutely wonderful that she is still in the charts these days. Her songs are absolutely timeless, and i hope she lives forever.

She's making a good job of living forever. Her music is timeless - well firmly rooted in the 1940s. She's my parent's generation and so I heard a lot of her when I was a child too.

I watched her on CNN while I was getting ready for work this morning. What a legend! And a chart topper at 92? What an inspiration also! From what I saw of her on the news, she's damn fit and sprightly for her age as well. Pink Floyd wrote and performed a fantastic song dedicated to her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujX4AXAIOWY I hope the link above works as I'm having trouble viewing certain sites on my PC at the moment and YouTube is one of them. Please let me know if it's wrong and I'll re-paste a new one when I get home. I think old songs making a comeback is a wonderful thing. History is history and we should all be exposed to it in whatever forms possible.

I didn't know about Pink Floyd recording a tribute James. I couldn't make the link work - or my own above. I have to agree with you on the history front. It serves a purpose and we shouldn't forget what was achieved - good or bad.

Unfortunately yes, old songs from my childhood are making a comeback. I say unfortunately because they are being remade into hard, heavy, or techno, versions of what they used to be. When a band like Seether remakes George Michaels' Careless Whisper I just want to cry.

That's strange because he made me want to cry with the original. As did all Wham's songs! Could be worse though - no, I'm wrong. Couldn't be worse! LOL.

I think that they are old recordings Tamara, Vera says that she has given up singing now. But it is remarkable.

I agree with you. Several old time singers here have become popular again in the last few years, infact many are more popular now than during their own heydays, or lifetimes if they've passed. Here is one that everyone probably has heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnRqYMTpXHc It's been used in movies and commercials a lot.

Youtube won't let me load the song. But I do agree, many are popular still. Maybe it's because they could sing!! Unlike many today who look good but have about as much natural singing talent as a turnip. I'm turning into my Dad!

One of the Boss's favourite songs. This house is a shrine to old movies and songs. Want a weepy saturday then just pop round here. "It's a Wonderful Life" followed by a little Frank, Bobby or Louis. You'll be welling up in no time!

The song I attached was "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. I must be turning into you dad too, because I can't stand most of the current music. If I can't hum it in the shower, I don't like it.

hi pikey goodey theres someone older than me. he he. I did not know'of Vera Lynn but it sounds like she was really famous during world war2 I remember the Andrew Sisters and some other of our americans but' dont remember her. strange. I was just seventeen when the war broke out and my thoughts were probably else where I guess. i know that here we are hearing a lot of the old Beatles songs and I love it, I liked them when they first came to the US and have every since. I remember my mom and dad shaking their head at the Yellow Submarine and also at Elvis and his gyrations but I also liked Elvis. I know the US is sure in need of some tLC we are in such turmoil with some people ganging up on our new president others are defending him and personallyI am afraid to open my darned mouth here on mylot over my own opinions as I always get insulted by someone. I just hate that sort of thing, I dont insult people with whom I disagree so why do they not give me the same respect? anyway I love it that old favorites are coming back.

She was as famous here as the Andrew's Sisters are in the US Hatley. For us she symbolises "Britain" of a type that probably never really existed. I like the Beatles but I'm not sure that I was ever a real fan. As for the folk that bash Obama - most of them draw their "facts" from ill-informed opinionated web sites and frankly aren't worth the typing time that it takes to comment.

That explains your familiarity with Stonehenge. PS My daughter tells me I'm not that old. Even when she doesn't want something. :-)

Hi ya p1kef1sh Wow she is 92, I thouht she had already popped her clogs! I knew she was in the charts but didn't realise she had reached no.1, I missed the end of the chart show last night!! I wonder what really instigated that then? There is usually some sort of a campaign that gets these sort of things happening!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Apparently she has been "battling" her way up the album charts for some time Humbug. It's amazing how these things happen.

I think the World is in need of some loving care again P1key and what better way than listening to some of those old songs that gave so much comfort so many years ago? They seem so soothing when the World is in such turmoil and personally if I wish to be soothed and in need of loving care I would get it much more from songs like these than some of the ones that are out in the market today, sometimes the ones out today make me much more stressed than I already am!! I also think it is Wonderful that at 92 years old, Vera Lynn has a number 1 record in Britian! To top the U.K. album charts at any age is quite an accomplishment but to be 92, still kickin' and able to enjoy it is truly amazing!
